WHO SHOULD GRUNGEREPORT.NET COVER?

22 June 2010 76 Comments

With the recent Bush reunion article I posted, a lot of discussion started in the comments section regarding what bands/artists GrungeReport.net should cover.  I posted the Bush article as merely an experiment, it does not mean I am going to start covering them for sure or anything.

The root of GrungeReport.net is obviously the Seattle Grunge scene, but we also cover other bands from the Grunge/Alternative era in the 90’s like Stone Temple Pilots, Hole, and The Smashing Pumpkins to make this an active news site rather than just having a few stories every couple of days.  I think everybody knows the Seattle bands and the 3 non Seattle bands I cover were all clearly popular at the same time and while all of the bands had their own unique style, they all had an aggressive sound that helped define the 90’s.  Whether you want to call that the Grunge era, or whatever, it doesn’t matter.  It clearly was a pivotal era for rock music.

One scenario I could do is cover some bands readers suggest like I do with Foo Fighters.  I post major Foo Fighters stories, but not setlists or anything like that.

So, what do you guys think?  Do you want GrungeReport.net to post some stories about Bush?  Local H?  Some others bands?  I’m not biased one way or another when it comes to covering them.  I want to do what makes the readers happy.  Post some suggestions in the comments section, or shoot me an e-mail at grungereport @yahoo.com, without the space.

only cover the real grunge bands no smashing pumkins, bush.or grunge ripoff at least from cover the bands from 1984 to 1994 and at least the bands that are from Seattle

  • O.B.gene said:

active bands who, in my opinion, would bring more people to this site might include…

    - The Pixies
    - Silverchair
    - Bush
    - Fuel
    - Tool/A Perfect Circle
    - Red Hot Chili Peppers
    - Blind Melon
    - Candlebox/The Gracious Few
    - Janes Addiction
    - The Black Crowes

    and there’s hundreds more, obviously.

i’d say, change the name of this site and move with the times. keep things fresh, whilst still maintaining what the ‘grunge’ era bands stood for.

Bands who influenced the 90’s alternative ones :

    Sonic Youth

    The Pixies

  • Andrei said:

I agree with the ones above.

But most especially, I’d like to see covered here:

    Red Hot Chili Peppers
    R.E.M.
    Garbage

Would definitely bring some cool new blood here.

  • Tchelo Laquimia said:

I completely agree with all the suggestions by O.B.Gene!!!
Especially one of the best bands ever:

    TOOL

  • ManBeast said:

Dinosaur Jr, Pixies, Toadies, Jane’s Addiction.

  • Brett (author) said:

I’m leaning towards covering the Toadies and Local H. I’d like to cover Bush too, but that’s up to the readers. I may do individual polls for each band. I think all 3 are somewhat post Grunge but they were pre Creed, Creed and onwards it was all just shitty ripoffs. I’d say anybody that broke through in the mainstream after 1995/1996 can’t be covered.

The Pixies and Jane’s Addiction were precursors to Grunge, they paved the way for the Grunge/Alternative boom in popularity in the 90’s. I don’t think they’d exactly fit in on GR. Not that all the bands I cover sound the same, but they all have that sludgy guitar/heavy vocal sound of the 90’s. I’ll look into Dinosaur Jr. Trust me I’d love to cover Jane’s they’re one of my all time favorite bands, but I don’t think of them as being part of the Grunge era.

  • Brett (author) said:

Also if Blind Melon can ever find a new singer I would cover them.

  • Brett (author) said:

Tool/A Perfect Circle and Red Hot Chili Peppers don’t really fit into the style I cover.

  • Andrei said:

OK. But what about R.E.M.? They were a huge influence on Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain and even had a grunge album in 1994, Monster.

    How about Counting Crows?

  • Brett (author) said:

REM are another Jane’s Addiction/Pixies type. I love all 3 bands, but they set the stage for Grunge. They didn’t break big in the 1991-1994 timeframe, Jane’s Addiction actually broke up in 1991 right before Nevermind was released.

You’re doing a pretty good job .. Less is more… adding foo fighters to the list makes sense…. maybe adding info about the Wellwater Conspiracy, Hater, the Monkeywrench ….. Queens of the Stone Age broke In 98′ but Josh wanted Lanegan to be his lead singer, Josh was a Sreaming Tree , Matt Cameron played drums at the first Queens show , Ben Shepard played bass at an early jam session ……

  • James said:

Cover whatever you want to cover and will enjoy most, it is your site. However, I wouldn’t recommend covering Bush, as among the grungers I know, they are absolutely LOATHED. Try covering some nongrunge bands that influenced the scene though, or whom are often associated with being a “true” alternative to the mainstream.

The Pixies, Butthole Surfers, Foo Fighters, REM, Silverchair (their first two albums were grunge, since then they have really broadened their horizons, and it is a shame they get ignored for being “post grunge”), Sonic Youth, QOTSA, possibly Blind Melon though you would not get much on them (They did reunite though, and release a decent album), etc.

However, you say you do not want to cover bands that were not directly “grunge” (Pixies, RHCP, Jane’s Addiction, Tool, APC, etc). That means you probably would not want to cover REM, I would imagine (those are all big bands anyways, with information that is to be easily accessed.)

So really.. It is up to you.

Foo fighters, big news only of RHCP, big news only of QOTSA, i don’t know, if the new album of bush is shit dont cover them if it is good cover big news of them

bush, the pixies, sonic youth, red hot chili peppers, jane’s addiction, tool, foo fighters just to name a few. I’m thinking maybe this site should cover more “Gen X” then just grunge specifically.

    Foo Fighters
    Bush
    Janes Addiction
    Tool
    Blind Melon
    Sonic Youth
    Candlebox
    Silverchair (90’s stuff were grunge)

Note those are just possible suggestion not must.

  • Tulio said:

i say don`t cover anymore farandula stuff like “Courtney love fights with billy Corgan and Vbilly Corgan says….”. Really when i see that topics i don`t come to the page let`s say about in a month becuase it pisses me off. That`s not grunge, not music, that just bullshit. Well and about Bush i dont think they deserve a space in this page, they always were/are in a vampiric mood in torn of grunge scene, but if you continue posting “courtney love fights with…” maybe they deserve to be here. Don`t know jus post music stuff, not stupid farandula stuff.

If anything, could you cover Courtney Love less? I understand she is a big part of grunge, but everything she does present day is just sad.

Stick to the Grunge Brett, or this site will fade away like many others. Since I’ve bookmarked it, I’m here every time when I’m on-line, ’cause not only because I like grunge as music, but also as a way of life. That period, the 90s, has a special place in music history. For me, when I first heard Nirvana’s School or AIC’s Would! or SG’s Outshined or…that was the moment when i realized that the style they called ‘grunge’ got inside of my brain and will never get out! Even today when I see some of my friends I used to hang out together, we always talk about grunge and about those days when we played together, played all those incredible songs on our acoustic guitars and improvised drums. Personally I do not accept the term ‘post-grunge’. There is no ‘post’! There was Grunge, and after Grunge era it’s something else, please do not call it ‘post-grunge’ or sub-grunge or grunge-rock-hard-mix-grungy sound. It’s something different and it can only be called as:’It sounds a little like a Grunge BUT IT’S NOT’.
Anyway, I agree with many of you regarding the bands you mentioned, I also like many of them, but still think that this is not a place for them. The best proof is Black Gives Way To Blue. Who says that Grunge is dead!?! Jerry proved that he can make, even 20 years after, a real pure grunge album. He did it and I thank him so much ’cause he gave us some new grunge songs.
So, if any band in the world today, a new one or reunited, can create, as Brett said:’…sludgy guitar/heavy vocal sound of the 90’s’, I’d be glad to see them covered here.
Until that, I will stick to my favorite bands from that period.
I am sure that anyone who close his/her eyes and instantly has an image of rainy Seattle and garage rehearsals, while listening to the Soundgarden’s song AppleBite, will understand me.
Thanks, no offense to anyone! But that’s my opinion.

Like many have said, it would be nice if the site sticks to the Grunge Era bands…HOWEVER, I think it would be great if Grunge Report continues to provide news on individuals from those bands in their current music projects (Mark Lanegan and his many contributions, Stone w/Brad, Cornell’s work, etc.).

The site should definitely be expanded to include Melvins, Sonic Youth, and Local H as well!

Major news on Smashing Pumpkins, Jane’s Addiction, Blind Melon (if they ever do anything again), fuck Hole (haha unintentional pun), and Tool wouldn’t be the worst idea either. All the bands from 1990-1992 that broke have incredible amounts of talent as evidenced by their current success touring and releasing new albums. Grunge isn’t dead, it’s alive. And as much as I hate Nickelback, Creed, and all the other modern “rock” music, we can thank them for the return of Grunge. Talentless bands don’t last and neither does their music. I’m just glad I’m alive and have tickets to see everyone before they get too old to do their own music justice. For that, I give thanks to the Music Gods.

  • Robert said:

Bands like Nickleback and Creed don’t deserve any regozation and mocked the sound of grunge. Thank the real bands the spring out in the early 90’s including the real grunge bands.

I think everyone on here know the suckitude of bands like Creed and Nickelback, so isn’t it really beating a dead horse to mention them in every other comment? This is starting to look like youtube.

I wouldn’t mind some coverage on new “grunge-influenced” bands, like when you briefly mentioned Cage the Elephant.

Not sure if there is any new info on this band, but they’re from Seattle and had members of Mother Love Bone in them, so I nominate:
    Love Battery

Other bands that aren’t grunge, per se, but are still heavy, alternative and rockin…
    Toadies
    Queens of the Stone Age
    Dinosaur Jr.
    The Black Keys

  • Alex said:

    Foo Fighters

    Love Battery

    Green River

    R.E.M.

You guys should listen to DEAD CONFEDERATE – Wrecking Ball

Seriously Tool, they werent “grunge” I guess but they did come out of the same time I think they had started it 89. Maynard was also really good friends with Layne, if you havent herd where Maynard played with AIC for a benefit show that is a must!. Also they have played played with the melvins and are really good friends with Buzz, their pretty much right in there with anybody else. They were just in LA not Seattle. But hey STP was from La to right???

I reckon we need Toadies covered, they’re releasing a re-recorded version of their 1998 planned second album, Feeler (which was never released) in the coming months and they’ll be releasing a new album next year.

  • Tommy said:

Existing bands and bands that have connections to them from the “originals”… Audioslave, Queens Of The Stone Age, RATM, Foo Fighters, etc. I wouldn’t go to acts that have no connection, like Black Crowes, etc. And I’d stop the bands if they formed/broke after like 1994, so include Silverchair/Bush (big news only, because Grunge fans liked them, and some still do). Then add selected few new grunge bands if they fall into the categpry and have some recognition amongst the grunge fans, like maybe The Strokes?!

hey Brett, I’m glad you said you only want to add a few more bands. Otherwise this great site might go the way of a lot of newspapers in this age of tailored information. Daily newspapers in big cities used to try to cover everything back in the day, then didn’t see the writing on the wall when people started turning to the ‘Net for their particular interests. Now a lot of papers/newspaper sites are rethinking their mission (sorry for the buzzword stuff) and either stressing local coverage big-time or being much more specific in covering certain areas only. In other words, if this site waters down its focus on grunge, it will please no one by trying to please everyone. There are plenty of sites for general music news. And after all, people are free to discuss other bands or types of music in the general music area.

Dinosaur Jr. and Mark Lanegan should definitely be here. Maybe the Pixies too. Foo Fighters, QUOTSA and Them Crooked Vultures would be nice too, because of their connections to grunge. Stop posting about Courtney’s insane tweets or her fights with Billy Corgan, and stick to only posting music news when it comes to Billy C/The Pumpkins. This site looks too much like a tabloid as it is.

If you start covering Bush, Candlebox and the like then I’ll really stop taking this site seriously, though.
