Frances McKee of The Vaselines has admitted that her children prefer Nirvana’s cover of ‘Molly Lips’ to her original. The group’s 1988 Dying For It EP featured the that track and ‘Jesus Don’t Want Me For A Sunbeam’, both of which were performed by Nirvana after the Scottish band first split in 1990.Asked what Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain took from their song, guitarist/singer Eugene Kelly told The Guardian: “I think he liked the childlike simplicity of them.”They weren’t trying to get a big message across, they were just simple, funny tunes that were maybe an antidote to the heavy, visceral rock stuff he was performing.”His songwriting partner McKee added: “My kids have just got into Nirvana and my eldest boy – he’s 9 – turned to me recently and said, ‘Mom, we prefer Nirvana’s version of ‘Molly’s Lips’ to yours!’”Regarding rumors that Cobain and Courtney Love’s child Frances Bean was named after her, McKee said: “I’ve heard that, although I’ve also heard she’s named after Frances Farmer the actress. But if it’s true it’s a huge compliment. I would love to meet her.”
