SM: I saw the Temple of the Dog stuff that happened around the Pearl Jam 20 shows. Any chance of that happening again?

Mike McCready: I’d love it. I’d love to do another record. If it happens organically and everyone’s into it, it’d be awesome. We were all around the same place the first time. And that’d have to happen again. And it was a different cause, for sure. But I’m up for it. I’d play with those guys any time.

Another band that you’ve been a part of that once included the late Layne Staley is Mad Season. Is there any leftover material that didn’t make the debut album? If so, is there a chance that any of that will see the light of day?

Fantastic question! Funny you should mention that because we are working on that right now. There was another record that we did that, unfortunately, Layne (Stanley) and (Mark) Lanegan didn’t show up for – we did do music for it. There are a total of 11-12 unreleased songs that need a little bit of editing here and there. We’re looking at putting together those songs with singers who are the late Layne Staley’s caliber, if we can find them. I’d also like to find out if we can remaster and then re-release Above. I also came across some live tapes of a live show we did at the Crocodile. I was at our warehouse and found some two-inch tape of the show. I’d love to release all of this by the end of this year – that’s what we’re shooting for. I probably shouldn’t be telling you any of this, but that’s the plan as of the last two days.

GRUNGEREPORT.NET REVIEW OF CHRIS CORNELL’S SHOW IN MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA
MAY 16, 2012
WRITTEN BY TY STALNAKER

The loose approach definitely has some advantages, and Chris Cornell has taken this and refined it with his acoustic shows.

His most recent series of dates find him meeting voracious crowds with lengthy, indulgent sets that are open to audience participation. His show in Miami Beach was no exception.

Opening with a few low-key solo numbers, almost like starting an engine, the show soon kicked into gear with what was almost a Temple of the Dog mini-set. Four songs in a row stirred the audience to attention, with a subdued but potent Hunger Strike topping the salvo of songs. Multiple selections from Audioslave and then Soundgarden followed. Fell on Black Days registered high notes that had the audience shrieking in reciprocation. Many of the songs of the night were divided into pairings, like Seasons and Sunshower, giving an overview of the many phases and styles of Cornell’s output. On Mind Riot, he explained that the tuning was difficult to match on multiple guitars in a band setting, but with only one guitar the sound was easier to achieve. Possibly the most rare offering of the night was The Roads We Choose. Cornell gave some background on the song’s history, explaining that he tried it for Audioslave’s second and third albums, before it became a bonus track on his own second solo effort.

After a short break, the encore’s parade of hits began, much to the crowd’s delight. Like a Stone triggered some sing alongs, with Black Hole Sun and Imagine giving way to a few standing ovations. His two hour set left the boisterious crowd gratified. With the acoustic Songbook shows, it seems Cornell has found a setting that perfectly compliments his robust catalog of material.

Where are you at on the new Pearl Jam record?

Right now, we’re in the middle of it. We’ve got eleven or twelve songs in their infant stages. We’re working on making them a little bit tighter and making them the best they can possibly be. We’re all doing our different things this year. Matt is doing some touring with Soundgarden. Ed is doing some of his solo touring. Stone’s doing BRAD, and I’m doing a little Flight to Mars. It’s not going to be out this year. We’re about halfway done, so it’ll probably be out next year.

Backspacer was a masterpiece. It’s exciting to hear what you do next.

I think you’ll be excited about this. It’s moving to a progression. It’s different. I’m pretty stoked about this record.

Thanks to Matt A:

Wanted to let you know, Jack Endino remastered and released all Skin Yard albums digitaly (except for Inside the Eye, probably due to Daniel House not being on that record, even though it rocks). They sound amazing and are available on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play store and some of the other music sites as of today (5/15).
