the riff is pure soundgarden. but it seems like chris was holding back a bit. normally i feel, he has the ability to slow it way down and deepen his voice, or do the classic cornell high notes, its like he is stuck in the middle on this one, like the last few audioslave songs. dont get me wrong, first soundgarden release in years, im not trying to be critical, just wasnt expecting what i heard. i guess you could also say that this is a soundgarden song, for a soundtrack, for a comic book…..so all in all it is what it is. cant wait for the fall, thats when we will really know what kind of creature has been manifesting in belly of soundgarden for the last 15 years.

It sounds like a mediocre Chris solo song until 2:58 when Kim rips in. The hook just isn’t there. Let’s hope stuff on the actual album is better. I like The Keeper better than this.
I think it’s pretty decent. Nothing special.
HAAHAHA what a load of ballad salad mix. BOO who are these imposters?
They are getting old aren’t they. L0L
Great Song. You can really here Kim’s vintage grunge/metal shredding at the about the 3 minute mark. The Soundgarden sound is still there with a bit of a modern twist of course. We all have to realize that there sound is going to be totally different and new than from previous SG albums. I agree with Jon, I think Chris was holding back his vocal power quite a bit which was probably due to the fact that this song was made for a soundtrack. I cannot wait for the new album in the fall. I give this song a 8 out of 10. I am just so greatful to here new SG material for the first time since I was 13!
Remember its a “soundtrack” song. Name something better thats playing right now.
the worst sg song ever. I’m about to puke.
I gotta say I’m a bit disappointed here. Still better than pretty much anything else that comes out these days but far from being as good as “Tarantula” from SP or “Looking in view” from AIC in terms of comeback songs really. Chris’s voice just won’t do “it” anymore IMO.
Good riff though. And yes, hail to the Kim.
Uploaded it to YouTube!
Brett is right here and unfortunately it sucks, just like the movie will…
I really like it. At first I was a bit let down. But after 10 listens I’m hooked! Yes its not heavy, until certain parts. But it is what it is.
This is not fucking Soundgarden. I don’t know what it is but this is not Soundgarden.
Oh well, no worries. It’s just a soundtrack song.
Usually these are mediocre.
Wow, a buch of you are selfish little pricks. First off, this is a song made for a soundtrack! Of course its going to be catchy, and commericalized. The album will sound like soundgarden; dont you all worry! I dont get that some of you complain about soundgarden coming out with a brand new fucking song in 15 years! You should be thankful that they can make music, while kurt cobain, layne staley, shannon hoon, etc cant because they are dead. Im pretty sure if soundgarden were victims like them you all would be saying, I WOULD DO ANYTHING TO HEAR A NEW SONG! Just wait until fall guys, then you will be crazy as to why your were bitching in the first place…
They wrote it espacialy for the movie, and then I hope that’s why it sounds a little too much “commercial post-grunge”…
I’m confiant that the new album will be much better!
I like it.
Pearl Jam doesn’t sound exactly like Pearl Jam of 1997 – why should Soundgarden?
jjc, the problem to me is it’s not catchy. You Know My Name was a catchy enjoyable soundtrack song.
This song is only for a soundtrack,is the way it have to be
This is a very poppy sounding Soundgarden song, but after Black Hole Sun and Fell on Black Days I am not surprised we are not getting a blisterning heavy Soundgarden song. The best parts of Superunknown and DOTU were never played on the radio, right?
Here’s the lyrics, at least.
What if all you understand could fit into the center of a hand, and then you found it wasn’t you who held the sum of everything you knew. We’re insane but not alone, we hold on and let go.
Like the sun, we will live to rise. Like the sun, we will live and die – and then ignite again. Like the sun, we will live to rise again.
What if the one thing that I missed was everything I need to pass the t…est, and if I fail what happens then? Can I still count on you as a friend? We’re insane, but not alone, we hold on and let go.
Like the sun we will live to rise. Like the sun we will live and die – and then ignite again. Like the sun we will live to rise again.
Warm my face, warm your face, warm my face, warm your face.
Gotta agree with Brett’s review. I was a little worried until Kim’s solo kicked in (awesome as always), but that still doesn’t save it from being a letdown. Sounds too much like a Chris solo song. As eclectic as their past albums have been, I don’t think this is indicative of what we’re going to be hearing this fall.
After about 5 listens I just noticed that after the 2:38 mark the song begins to sound like a Down on the Upside track a little bit. Cornell’s vocals even get a little more raspy at that point as well. Also, right at about the 3:53 mark on the track you hear a cool little riff to end the rack (very SG esque) on the guitar most likely played by Kim. This song does grow on you.
From Birth Ritual and Blind Dogs to this. No thankyou. Just because the song’s on a soundtrack doesn’t mean it has an excuse to be bland.
I dunno, it’s a good song, but not Soundgarden great. I would say it’s easily the most generic rock song they’ve put out. I like Soundgarden’s “softer” stuff, but this lacks any kind of bite or edge. Vocals are kind of nice. The whole production feels kind of flat.
After reading all the comments, I didn’t think I would like the song. But, I do like it – it’s not bad at all!
omg you people are stupid, dont you get that Chris voice has changed the last 15 years!??! IM GLAD he sings the way he sings live on this song!
im enjoying to listen matt’s drum. go go go go matt!
Why’d you delete my comment?
I’m disappointed with cornell’s voice :/
Meh for a Soundgarden song, but that still makes it better than 99% of whats on the radio right now.
I have to say most of the Audioslave material is way better than this. I sure hope the album doesn’t sound ANYTHING like this. I want the dark heavy weird SG that we all knew. not this mediocre shit.
Important thing to remember: according to KISW, this was written specifically for the soundtrack.
@Crazies’ got a point here. Probably the fact that Audioslave did better than this IMO is why it is actually a little bit disappointing.
This is absolutely horrendous, I am going to vomit now.
This song will be perfect for his Song Booky Tour..L0L
Chris said the new album “will sound like” Down on the Upside. The song does sound like it
Huh? I’m lovin the song. Grows on me more each time. I just dislike the production really and the effects on Chris’s voice. Great besides that.
Not bad. But not spectacular. It’s a soundtrack song, for a movie based on a comic, so I wasn’t really expecting much. I have to say I prefer “The Keeper” over this. But it’s still to hear. The problem is until Kim came in with the (badass) solo, I couldn’t really hear Soundgarden. There’s something about the production that worries me, as well. Hopefully the album doesn’t sound like this, production wise.
I’m happy to hear some new Soundgarden, but the song is pretty weak by Soundgarden standards. It sounds like an Audioslave song that was left off an album.
I’m sure there’s better stuff to come from SG.
And Chris sounds fine. The whole band sounds great. I’m just referring to the actual song (riff, melody, lyrics, etc.). It’s not all that.
Jesus…fans these days. Entitled little know-it-alls who can’t understand progress without defaulting to their cherished “change bad, yesteryear good” mindset. Go on, tell Soundgarden how they are not being Soundgarden by writing and recording a Soundgarden song.
Wow. That’s not what I was hoping for. I wouldn’t have even known it was SG, it sounds like solo Chris. What a bummer.
This does sound more like a solo Chris song than a Soundgarden song. I hope the album will be much different than this.
Gotta love the folks that get all worked up when someone says something “negative”. Chill out dudes, some of us think this sucks. Is it not OK to say so? Sorry, I love and have missed this band just as much as the next guy. Not ashamed to say that the lyrics, hook and production of this song are geared completely for corporate rock radio. And that makes it sound lame. Sure, they’re older now and things have changed. But if I don’t like it, I don’t like it. Why can’t I say so? I can’t believe this is the only NEW thing that they’ve shown us since their reunion announcement like 2 YEARS ago. Makes me worry about the new album.

Black Rain > Live To Rise…
people complain if a song sounds too much like (insert previous album here)
people complain when a band doesn’t sound enough like themselves, like when they put out (insert same previous album here)
either you embrace change, or you stagnate. the issue here is I think fans weren’t able to gradually embrace that change, as someone mentioned, like in the case of Pearl Jam. If they had gone straight from Vitalogy to Backspacer, the reaction would have been the same.
No one is EVER happy with a “comeback” or “reunion” record. expectations are through the roof in their own minds that it’s going to be this epic song of ridiculous proportions. Just enjoy a new SG track for what it is.
Wow, kinda underwhelming, huh? We waited how many years for *this*? I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s ok, but Brett is right. It lacks a good hook, doesn’t make good use of Kim’s good riff, and is repetitive. Matt and Chris were just bland here. I thought it would be a hard rocker based on the snippet and the fact that it is going to be on a superhero movie soundtrack with some heavy bands. It sounded like a Carry On b-side. But I won’t press the panic button. This isn’t like it’s the first single off the album. Chris is way way way too incredible a musician to churn out an album like this. Every once in a while, he is human and puts out a dud. Life happens, let’s just look forward to the album.
This song is decent. I’ve only listened to it once so maybe it will grow on me. I agree with those that say it sounds more solo Chris than it does Soundgarden. It just wasn’t what I expecting. However, this is for a movie soundtrack so who knows if it will be on the album or not. I’m sure it’s a grower but I just wanted to have a more Soundgarden feel to the song.
I just listened to it and it is not Soundgarden as I know them.
Sounds like all the parts have been bolted together and they dipped in their musical tool box of spares and found a chorus hook and a verse melody that was hidden in the Crisis Cornell solo project corner and they all burst out laughing and said “fuck it, it sounds pretty shit but this soundtrack lark is a serious ball ache so lets just use it get paid and fuck off down to the pub!”
Haha….Soundgarden has just raised the stakes big time with the suspicion that they could possibly fail big with their new album!
I think they may just pull it off as long as a tune like this doesn’t appear on their album because we all know that Soundgarden albums have banging tunes and not this album filler crap.
R.I.P to Soundgarden’s flawless career, I thought I was listening to shopping maul music. The 22 second teaser should have been the entire song!
btw, the April fools Creed joke was on us as that was a much better song than this!
Does Cornell remind anyone on here of Icarus?
I look at it this way, if this song came up on my iPod through a shuffle… I’d probably skip it.
Most of you commenters shock me at what morons you are. You actually expect a new track from the band to sound like it’s 1991 again and Badmotor Finger? Like, honestly?
This is a damn good song. A little poppy and mid-tempo, but one of the best new rock songs I’ve heard in a while. They’re a rock band of grown men in their late 40s and early 50s, they would sound ridiculous if they were trying to mimic themselves as they were when they were 27 year olds.
Get a grip people.
The main riff is cool but Cornell really sounds like he’s phoning it in. His vocals are technically great, as always, but sound detached and emotionless. Oh well … maybe the rest of the album will be good but, after 15 years, they shouldn’t have picked such an underwhelming song for their “comeback”.
The fact that a song was written for a soundtrack is not a valid excuse for it being bland and soulless.
There’s nothing wrong with this track. Does it sound like the amalgamation of all Cornell’s endeavors rolled into one? Absolutely, but that actually makes it a great song to me. You guys do remember this is the same band that wrote Boot Camp , Big dumb sex, Slaves and bulldozers, and She’s a politician right?
To even say this isn’t a Soundgarden song is actually pretty hysterical because they always went in different directions, which is why i liked them as opposed to most other bands that don’t change very much.
This song will def grow on ppl and i know it will sound waaaay better live.
Interview with Chris & Matt
Chris says ‘this was made for the movie, not on the new album * tht the new album is left of center & will appeal too hardcore Soundgarden fans’
So don’t expect the new album to sound like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS SONG SUCKS!! TO BE HONEST
I KNOW ITS SOUNDGARDENS RETURN TO MAKING A NEW GRUNGE ROCK MOVEMENT , BUT THE QUALITY OF THE SONG , THE PRODUCTION AND THE VOCALS JUST REALLY DRAIN THE SONG DOWN , ITS NOT FAST, ITS TOO MOODY, ITS TOO MELOCHOLY, IT ALMOST SOUNDS LIKE PARTS OF AUDIOSLAVE AND CHRIS CORNELLS SOLO ALBUMS OF THE PAST. THE ORIGINAL SOUNDGARDEN “GRUNGE FORMULA” WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE , FAST GUITARS, FAST DRUMS, SONIC BOOM SOUNDING SCREAMING VOCALS AND JUST A COOL UNDERTONE OF BLACK SABBATH MEETS THE STOOGES/ THE RAMONES/ NIRVANA ELEMENTS EVEN. JUST RETURN TO A MORE PUNK SOUND OKAY CHRIS CORNELL AND SOUNDGARDEN?? GOD I HOPE THE REST OF THE ALBUM WILL BE WAY BETTER THAN TIHS COMMERCIAL MOVIE SOUNDTRACK. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE SOUNDGARDEN!! NOT SOUNDASLEEP
Z Z Z Z Z ( AVENGERS MOVIE SOUNDTRACK ) Z Z Z Z Z Z
SOUNDGARDEN …AND WE WILL LIVE TO RISE AGAIN , BLAH BLAH BLAH SNOOZE
Z Z Z Z
COME ON! NOT EVEN BLACK HOLE SUN, FELL ON BLACK DAYS AND EVEN BLACK RAIN WERE THIS BORING
IF YOU ALL LISTEN TO SOUNDGARDENS REMIX SONG : THE TELEPHANTASM , ITS A REALLY GREAT FAST PUNK SONG , NOW IMAGINE MIXING IN CHRIS CORNELLS DOWN ON THE UPSIDE / SUPERKNOWN / BAD MOTORFINGER VOCALS TO IT COOL HUH??
THATS WHAT WE ALL WANT TO HEAR FROM THIS GREAT GRUNGE ROCK BAND FROM SEATTLE. DAMM , LETS HOPE PEARL JAMS NEXT ALBUM DOESNT FALL TO COMMERCIAL RADIO DRAINAGE .
or you know?? maybe chris cornell, dave grohl, slash, tom morello and ben shepard can start a new superband
RAGE AGAINST GRUNGE
Hey did Chris Cornell become the ironman? hahaha
Robert Downey Jrs bodydouble looks like Cornell himself . No wonder this song is so dry and boring . Hes been busy acting than making real grunge rock music
It seems that Matt Cameron is being a very poppy influence to the bands he is playing the drums at.
sad to know this is a SG song after so many years waiting…
DAVE A. get on the drum sticks in Pearl Jam again, please!
Dude writes all in caps = must be true
not awful but definitely weak, even for a commercial soundtrack. I have high hopes for the new album though I hope its good.
Sounds more like Audioslave and Cornell solo but Kim riff’s saved the song with the riffs and solo. Disappointed that there was no screaming. Sounds like a mixture of Down on the Upside and Audioslave.
If this WAS a Chris solo song I wouldn’t be disappointed, it’s not a bad song, it just sounds nothing like Soundgarden and what we expect to hear from that name. I guess Chris’s time as a solo artist and in Audioslave was bound to rub off on his songwriting though, the dude has mellowed out a lot, 1996 was a long time ago!
It’s better than Applebite!
The first verse near the end reminds me of Zero Chance a bit. The overall structure of the song also reminds me of No Such Thing.
Also reminds me of Your Time is Come by Audioslave.
DAMM listening to makes me wanna listen to the chris cornell james bond soundtrack : you know my name lol from the year 2007 right after audioslaves breakup
by the way, now that soundgardens reunion is going good , so far
when is audioslaves gonna get back together and play songs and record stuff again? you know rage against the machines isnt making new albums right now , so why not?
I love You Know My Name! Sure it’s corny, but it’s CATCHY with a solid melody. That’s what a movie soundtrack song should sound like.
Also for reference look at three other big 90′s bands that recorded songs for big blockbuster action movie soundtracks, to me they’re all way better and hold up to the rest of the respective band’s catalogs.
Stone Temple Pilots wrote “All In The Suit That You Wear” for the Spiderman soundtrack but they rejected it as lead single for Nickelback…ugh, but this is it and it’s great http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nbA6OR2yTg
Alice In Chains recorded What The Hell Have I and A Little Bitter for the Last Action Hero soundtrack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKXIk45pL0o&ob=av2n
The Smashing Pumpkins recorded “The End Is The Beginning Is The End” for the Batman & Robin soundtrack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Repx-edo42I&feature=fvst
Another random note is that STP turned down 1 million dollars in 1998 to record a new song for the Godzilla soundtrack. They were on hiatus at that point but weren’t broken up.
The song is average but if this was released as an Audioslave or a Cornell solo song then I won’t be disappointed at all. But I understand most likely Chris wrote the song for the them the last minute so it is more of a unfinished song then anything else.
Fucking awesome song.
I rate this 5 out of 10. Like I said if this was a Cornell solo song/Audioslave then this would of been a good song for a movie soundtrack. This is really sounds to me like a mixture of No Such Thing and Your Time is Come.
It’s STILL better than Applebite!
this song absolutely sucks… its really sad man.. all the money these guys especiallly cornell has made over the years and he cant even bring something back that resembles badmotorfinger or even superunkown…. down on the upside was awful just like cornells audioslave band… no one wants to hear radio friendly trash man… where is the HEAAVY sabbath inspired riffs at??? and rawy metal/ grunge sound ???
Think that it sounds just how he wanted it to. Passion, but alittle flat. Love the song all through. Who am i to judge.
