MAD SEASON TO REISSUE ABOVE, LOOKING FOR SINGERS TO COMPLETE SECOND ALBUM

By: 23 April 2012 86 Comments

Mike McCready announced during a radio interview on WFPK today that Mad Season are planning on reissuing Above and also have a live album in the works. Mad Season released their lone album in 1995 and played their final show in April 1995. 3/4 of the lineup (Mike McCready, Baker, and Barrett Martin) recorded the instrumentals for a second album in 1997 but couldn’t get Staley or Mark Lanegan to sing on it. McCready said they are looking for singers to complete it. There are 12 songs without vocals. Baker passed away in 1999 and Staley died in 2002.

Please god let their be unreleased songs with Layne in them.

  • NickG said:

Hmmm,..haha. I wonder if there is anyway to get into contact with them about that, like as in if they are auditioning singers or just looking for them within their own circle of friends. Regardless, I’d at least like to crack a shot at doing some vocals for those instrumentals, that would be an absolute blast.

  • King Cornell 20 said:

Release anything with Layne on it, but I’m not sure how I feel about the other stuff going under the Mad Season name. So, to be clear, it’s not a “new” album and Layne had no input on the music?

  • Jon said:

They should get Brett Hestla of Dark New Day. Sounds a lot like Layne.

  • clayne said:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

please please, don’t. not without Layne…

    name it something else…

  • Lennart said:

Let it be a singer who understands and honors Layne. But don’t make this a sellout act Mike, Mad Season is too special to do that.

  • louderthanshit333 said:

This is the best news I’ve heard in a long time! Possible unreleased Layne songs, more Mad Season from 1994/95 sounds good in any way. Hoping this is on vinyl as well.

  • Mia said:

They should get Lanegan now. He’s been into a lot of collaborations lately.

  • Maverick785 said:

    Didn’t see this one coming

  • cosmicatomic said:

    Why doesn’t Lanegan do it?

That’s the only sensible option to me.

  • brian said:

Absolutely love the ‘above’ album.. been a huge layne staley fan, ever since alice in chain’s first time came out.. when I discovered ‘seattle’ and the ‘grunge era’, I loved it… ever since the late 80′s albums like: ‘flesh and blood: sacrice’, I thank washington conitnuosly.. seattle maimed those albums.. r.i.p. layne staley and mike starr…. we immensely miss you.. I also have a song I have uploaded, dedicated to layne, available for download, called ‘dead inside’.. ty for your music and thank you for saving my life, when I was in my darkest hour..heaven has a hell of a ‘rock n roll band’…

  • Superunknown said:

    Duvall.

    If they have to…

  • cosmicatomic said:

Duvall is fine in Alice but I don’t see or hear anything so spectacular about him that he should be some Pseudo Layne who’s good enough to touch Mad Season now. I think he’s got too much of a “hard rock voice” to sing any Mad Season.

Other than Lanegan, they could just go Alice Mudgarden on the bit and make it like a grunge super-duper-group. Kind of like Highwaymen, get Cornell and Vedder and Lanegan to collaborate on all songs!

  • Andrei said:

Lanegan would be perfect for this, I would love to have him sing the vocals on the un-released tracks.

  • 13977 said:

I agree Lanegan would be perfect for this!

  • yumm said:

If its not Lanegan this is fucking stupid. Why fuck up Madseason by bringing in some new singer that had nothing to do with Madseason in the first place. Madseason releasing that one album is part of what makes Madseason special. Its not like they had a great legacy like AIC or Pearl Jam and they have to bring it back because fans are demanding it. It was one album they did like 6 shows all in seattle. Its a great album no need to fuck with it. Its perfect the way it is. What they should do is just release the unreleased songs with the reissue of Above. Now that would be cool. But putting out a whole new album with some random singer is just dumb. This is a perfect example of “less is more.”

  • jjc19461 said:

@yumm, I totally agree man. Just release it the way it is, along with (if there is) material recorded with layne and Reissue Above. Dont milk us for some shitty other singer. Either Get Mark or release it the way it is. Do not get corey taylor…

  • John said:

A sort of Layne tribute would be great , with Mark lanegan , Chris Cornell … and other Seattle musicians…

    OK STOP DREAMING .

  • jjc19461 said:

*milk us as in taking our money, but nowadays who actually buys things? :P

  • Ace said:

There are no unreleased tracks with Layne Staley. I know this as an indisputable fact.

  • cosmicatomic said:

I generally agree that I’d find it hard to accept anyone other than Lanegan.

But the Seattle music community is pretty tight….it’d be cool if some combination of singers joined forces to kind of make a Temple of the Dog II and honor/tributed Layne the way Cornell & co honored Andy Wood. So if it was done in a way that honored Layne (and Baker too) I would be cool with it. Why should they let their music go to waste?

Maybe McCready can get Cornell/Vedder to do it again and sing an album full of Hunger Strikes to Mad Season tunes!!!

  • Reptile said:

They should get Scott Stapp from Creed in to handle vocal duties, I would love to hear what he could bring to those tracks plus he has a great grunge voice.

  • Cathy said:

I’ve been doing backflips over this since news all day. God I pray there’s songs with Layne. If not, however, it would be great if Lanegan did it. Also, what do you guys think about Cornell, Vedder and Cantrell all lending their vocals?

  • NickG said:

Why would they have to keep it within those few groups? I personally stated that I would love to see what I could do with those tracks but regardless of whether that more than likely doesn’t happen, I’d enjoy seeing them try to do something creative with someone new, get some outside influence in there. No matter what they do, it’d be a tribute to Layne, you know they wouldn’t just get some big name whoever just to make some money. It’d be just another creative outlet for these really talented guys. Same reason why Brad is doing what they’re doing now.

  • cosmicatomic said:

” Also, what do you guys think about Cornell, Vedder and Cantrell all lending their vocals? ”

    That’s what I’m talkin’ about!!

    Cantrell/Vedder/Cornell/Lanegan.

The instrumentals on Above were so badass, and I imagine it’s more of the same with the unreleased tracks.

I doubt there’s any unreleased Layne as it seemed like he had trouble filling up albums in that timeframe (go read the lyrics to NOTHIN SONG!), thus the reason there’s an instrumental or two on Above.

  • Anth said:

I don’t care if it’s the same songs already on the album; I’d be all over alternate takes/demos with Layne. I do love the idea of different guest vocalists on every song, which is the only sensible option other than Lanegan. But I don’t see what’s wrong with putting them out as instrumentals, if they have to be put out at all. I agree that the mythology of Mad Season being a single-album band is pretty sweet. Same as Temple of the Dog–even though all of its members are alive, some of the magic would be gone if they reunited beyond the occasional concert appearance.

Totally salivating over the live album though.

  • aydin said:

I think they let some vocalist friends of Layne and Baker to sing those songs.

  • Greg C. said:

If you are going to release a Mad Season II I think you’d have to give Rane Stone heavy consideration for the Layne vocals. He’s been paying tribute to Layne for several years in Seattle as lead vocalist in the AiC tribute band Jar of Flies. Hit reverberation and look up Jar of Flies, or go to YouTube and search Rane Stone “Love, Hate, Love”. Rane also fronts an all original Seattle band Klover Jane. http://www.kloverjane.com. please go listen!

  • Ken B said:

Rane Stone, period. Make it happen, Mike!

  • Demetri said:

Lanegan all the way and some Chris Cornell sprinkled in.

  • Calvin McLain said:

    Get everyone to contribute 2:

    -Vedder
    -Cornell
    -Cantrell
    -Lanegan
-Stipe or Corgan or Beck etc.

    Wonderful news!

  • Patrick said:

    @John

I like that dream a lot!

  • Patrick said:

    @Calvin McLain

I couldn’t see Stipe, Corgan, and especially Beck contributing. I don’t see a connection with any of them to the group.

The rest, makes perfect sense! Maybe Grohl, though I am not sure there is a direct connection their either.

I could see Josh Homme though – he is like an honorary Seattle musician – and briefly played in Screaming Trees.

  • JJ said:

Pretty much agree with everything that @cosmicatomic and @john have said. I really do not want to see the album released with anyone else doing vocals. Layne was so huge in Mad Season’s development and it was clearly a personal work of art- from the cover to the lyrics, it would’ve been a completely different album without him… can’t imagine including people on a new release that didn’t know Layne. No matter how big a fan you are you still don’t have the connection that his friends do, even if you’ve got the talent…

  • Carolyn said:

    Rane Stone

  • Aaron said:

I am loving cosmicatomic’s idea of having Vedder/Cornell/Lanegan providing tracks. What better way for the legends to pay tribute to Layne.

  • Evan said:

Lanegan or let the band stay inshrined the way it was.

  • Ryan said:

I think a collaboration with guys like Cornell/Vedder/Jerry/Lanegan would be pretty cool and could really fit as a Layne tribute album. Knowing that the music was laid down 15 years ago is pretty exciting, it has just been sitting around collecting dust but I am sure once we hear it will blow us away.

I really hope they do not just get some gimmick wanna be Layne singer but I do not think they will do that. I have heard that Layne was working on music during his time in seclusion…who knows maybe some how that will find its way on the album.

  • Kris said:

@cosmicatomic: great idea! I would love to see Cornell and Vedder record something special. And I agree with the majority of you of that Lagegan should be the main guy on vocals. It’s fitting and at least the legend of Layne’s time with Mad Season will live on without some new guy totally taking over.

  • elle said:

I agree, they should get Lanegan to do it but, they would need one other singer maybe Mark Arm or Chris Cornell.

  • MindRiot132 said:

Agree with all, Mark Lanegan was originally supposed to take the reigns after Layne (Disinformation). I would pick Lanegan over anyone. If they do a variety of guests, I just hope they fucking choose wisely.

Still, this is awesome news and totally out of the blue.

  • dakotablue said:

I will keep my fingers crossed there are some Layne tracks for this, but like Ace I think not. And cosmicatomic, I disagree about Layne having trouble filling up an album at that time. He was just such a perfectionist he didn’t want to put his name on second-rate crap (take note Jerry C!).

  • ILoveLayne said:

Layne that we’ve not heard????? Be still my heart. I will pray it’s true.

  • gsush said:

How about getting William DuVall & Mark Lanegan to sing on it now, that might be a good combo if they have the time.

Or even Chris Cornell as he would probably be up for it regardless of his schedule!

  • billy said:

I’ve always wanted to hear this second album. I know in late 90′s were going to do it without Layne and rename it Disinformation. I’d like to see Travis Meeks be the singer because then maybe he could get the money he needs to finally put out the 4th Days of the New album. Plus he is insanely talented and would sound great…..as long as he’s clean

  • Ben said:

I had a feeling it was going to be a Mad Season Reissue… however I was not expecting the second album to ever surface and certainly not for them to be looking for someone to sing on it.

I have always wanted to hear this second album and would have even been happy to hear just the instrumentals.

I think releasing this second album is exciting and fair enough, however I hope they make a wise decision over who is vocalist.

I’m undecided about whether it is ok to keep the band name the same for the second release… however It is not like it is a new album so essentially it is still Mad Season music which unfortunately did not have vocals recorded. If they decided to make a brand new album I think a name change would be appropriate. If Lanegan was vocalist they could change there name to Disinformation again.

  • Southern Discomfort said:

Maybe they should get Taylor Swift or Lil Wayne !!!

  • Dave said:

    Get William Duvall on that

  • Erik said:

Well originally it was to be Lanegan that was to sing the entire second album by Mad Season. That was the plan, as it became evident in ’97 that Layne was in no shape to do it himself. Therefore if Lanegan takes the job now, calling it Mad Season is just fine. The music is already written.

  • Tommy said:

    Lanegan
    Stipe
    Homme
    No one else!

  • Robert said:

They should get Mark Langeon or even Jerry Cantrell to sing.

  • Tony Veleno said:

They shouldn’t be called Mad season anymore its not the same band. layne is missed and also Alice In Chains shouldn’t be without Layne.

  • no said:

I would love if there were unreleased songs on the reissue of Above and I would love to hear a live album.

I am not sure what I think about the second album being completed and released. I obviously wouldn’t mind Lanegan being on it and I kinda like the idea of guys like Cornell, Vedder, & Arm being involved. I’d rather see Cantrell and the guy who replaced Layne in AIC, stick to singing in AIC (who I don’t really care to listen to anymore as far as new material goes).

  • tom said:

just release it instrumental – should be good enough without any vocals on it!

  • Lola said:

Seriously some people here NEEDS to learn how the music business work. What do you expect that every band/proyect Layne was part of it or paticipated to change their name?!?! are you serious?!?! So every band out there change their names when one of its members pass away?!? G R O W U P!!! Layne participated in Mad Season but he wasn’t the owner, same as Alice. the musicians has the right to go on, specially when they paticipate in the writing of music and such. Layne rejected to participate in the second lp. We love Layne but need to be realistic and knowledge a bit about music business. I do hope they find a fine man.

  • timtenbob said:

I hope it’s Mark Lanegan. If he wont do it I hope they just release the instrumentals as they are. Anyone else singing on that LP would feel horribly wrong. Mark Lanegan is surely in a different place now from where he was in 1997, if asked by Mike & fans maybe he would be up for it?

  • timtenbob said:

Lets ALL send a tweet a day to Mike & Mark to let them know how we all feel. Maybe they will listen to us all?

  • Andrei said:

    Mark has a twitter???

  • Dreux said:

Layne or not, I want to hear the unreleased material. Mike McCready, Barret Martin, and John Baker Saunders is still 3/4 of Mad Season, and having good, perhaps little-known singers on rotation is a good idea. It’s not going to “tarnish” anything. We’re talking about a band that’s legacy (to most) is “side-project/supergroup with singer from Alice in Chains and the guy from Pearl Jam”, and Above will always be an amazing, underrated album. The way I see it, the only thing that could possibly be “tarnished” is the unreleased material itself. That’s all to be worried about. Either way, I still want to hear it.

I’m also interested in the live show that McCready mentioned, though I’m sure it’ll be a DVD/CD release of the Moore show.

  • Dreux said:

All that said, I do think it would be nice to have Mark Lanegan singing on the album. I was initially concerned about lyrics, but he could also be the primary lyricist. He’s a great lyrical writer, and he did write chunks of “Long Gone Day”. Actually, I think it’s almost necessary for him to be on the album. He could sing lead on one sing, and sing backing vocals on several others (ala “I’m Above”),or even trade off lines with another singer (“Long Gone Day”). I think his presence will make it more “comfortable” for people to swallow.

  • no said:

    @Lola

I understand what you are saying, but I think you need to get over what the fans think about this. We’re not being immature when we have opinions like this, we’re being passionate about something that means a lot in our lives. I don’t know, maybe it doesn’t mean as much to you, but that doesn’t mean that it’s wrong for anyone else to feel the way they do. You say that fans need to “grow up” when they have these kinds of opinions, I say you should grow up for being so bothered by that.

  • Cathy said:

@timtenbob I already started campaigning all 4 – Mark, Chris, Ed, and Jerry. It may be a dumb dream but at least it can’t hurt to try, right?

@Andrei I couldn’t tell if you were joking or not but yes Mark has a twitter! It’s @marklanegan

  • Backdoorman said:

Great new. I have the lp but on cassette. In Madrid (Spain) i don´t find it on cd. I’m above sounded in my car -with another grunge songs-that distant summer from 1995 and 1996.

    I’m above is a 100% grunge song.

  • Bennett said:

If the live concert he is talking about is the Moore show, maybe (hopefully) they’ll release the whole thing this time? Never knew why they left off some of the songs they played that night from the video.

  • timtenbob said:

@Cathy, my tweets will be just for Lanegan. I dont think Chris, Eddie or Jerry should be involved even though I love those guys.

  • timtenbob said:

  • We Be Jammin said:

One thing to keep in mind is Layne Staley wrote most or all of the lyrics for Mad Season, so they would not only need a singer but someone to write lyrics for the second album. IRT – Duvall, Jerry Cantrell writes now writes the lyrics for Alice in Chains. Duvall makes little sense, and I would agree that Lanegan would be a good choice.

  • Would? said:

Well… I prefer Rocky Polan from Thread, have a great voice!

  • Michael said:

Without going through and reading every post before I made mine, this is my opinion whether it is wanted or not….Being a long time Alice/Mad Season fan Im torn both ways about this project. I know that lyrically, Above was all written by Layne except for what Mark sang on LGD. With Alice, Layne and Jerry basically split the writing duties overall. So with alice 2 different styles of writing made up the whole body of work. Though Laynes voice stood out more I couldnt imagine alice without Jerrys vocals. On the other hand without Laynes vocals (not to mention Baker on bass) this just isnt mad season at all…..Im not gonna say I wont support it…because I will…..but a tribute to mad season would be more fitting. Sorry for the rant im stoned lol.

  • no said:

    @Michael

From what I understand, Baker will be playing bass because the music for the album was already recorded. It is just the vocals that haven’t been done. Now playing shows would be a different story, but Baker is already on the album.

  • Jeremy Brooks said:

If Lanegan could do the lyrics NOW, I would probably wet my pants. Rerelease the remastered Above record, a Bluray of “Live at the Moore” and the new material with Lanegan on it. That shit son, would be epic !!
Make it a 3 disc box set for $40. GET THAT SHIT ON BLURAY, NOW !!!

  • Gsushc said:

What about Shaun Smith from Brad the “SHAME” album will allow you to understand why.

  • pretty penny said:

Both Layne and Lanegan didn’t want to do the vocals/lyrics way back when–and I think before Baker died, even. So what has changed? More time has passed, appreciation for Layne has grown. But Layne himself said Mad Season was over. So I don’t have a good feeling about some new vocalist stepping in and a second “Mad Season” album being released. It was Layne’s baby–RIP.

  • Mad Season Fan said:

I understand what you’re all saying about it being a pure thing that you don’t want to ruin, but he already said in the article that the name was changed back in 97. So I don’t think this will be Mad Season 2 – it would be a different band, a different project, but would still probably play the Mad Season songs live.

For my part, I hope they don’t recruit a superstar – I don’t think they need a superstar personality to propel it. I think it would be better with an unknown with some mystique.

I would love to be a part of this. I hate when people do this, but check out my band – and give me a bump if you think my voice could work :)

lets all keep in mind respectfully why mad season was put togehter..i believe it was to get some new inspiration and take a much needed break for layne from alice and chains and kinda “regroup”, meant both ways. he partnered up with what THEY ALL felt WAS the best members for what they were going for…obviously IT WORKED!! i have varied opinions, and as far as i think layne would react, i believe he’d be happy for the band and doing what they feel is right. as far as replacing him to get vocals on the track… PEOPLE… there is a reason why jerry cantspell was not included in mad season, dont think too hard. so i think repectfully jerry isnt the right one to put on the album. layne was pairing with individuals who he highly repected and had the musical abilities to make the super group mad season, therefore i hope it stays that way. hopefully you can get someone who knew layne so they can feel and revive the compassion, passion and conviction he used in whatever he sang. im confident the guys will do the right thing, they are seasoned musicans, with whom, this stuff comes natuarlly and simply flows from their thoughts to our ears. they know what they are doing, and will know the right fit when they hear it with the tracks. I have the upmost confidence it will be original form anything weve hear; amazing and powerful. we need REAL music and people who know how to put song arrangements together!! lets all honor layne in remembering all the laughter and good times, and embrace “looking forward” for new great musical opportunites that music is lacking right now (for me, its a little stale) lol. best of guys …u got this. and yes, in heaven.. as we speak, there is another supergroup practicing for a huge show!!! dont miss it..as layne said” get born again”
