Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan discussed Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder on Opie and Anthony on Thursday, “You can’t manufacture people like me. Maybe you don’t want to. How many Eddie Vedder clones have they marched out? And I’m not a big Vedder fan, but at least he’s Eddie Vedder. You know who he is, you know what he’s about. Okay great, these other people I don’t know what they think. They might be from Mars for all I know.”
A few years ago, onstage during the Smashing Pumpkins 20th Anniversary Tour, Corgan talked about Vedder’s song for the Cubs, “If the Cubs did have a chance this last year that just passed, fuckin’ Eddie Vedder killed that shit dead. Last I checked Eddie ain’t living here, okay? Eddie ain’t living here to write a song about my fuckin’ team.”

I hate to be “that guy” but once again, Brett, I think you’ve isolated what is actually a relatively innocuous statement when taken in context but as a headline encourages the reader to think, “Damn, that Corgan fellow won’t rest until he’s attacked every single famous person who ever existed.” While I wouldn’t go so far as to say he compliments Eddie–he does give him proper credit for being genuine (and coming from Billy, who seems to value a lack of hypocrisy above all else, it is “HIGH PRAISE INDEED!”). The story isn’t that Billy isn’t crazy about Vedder, but that there are so many useless Vedder imitators out there, whereas you won’t find many pseudo-Corgans for one reason or another.

While they’re a decent band, there’s a load of suggestions that they’re a Smashing Pumpkins clone, from multiple overdubbed fuzz guitar, right down to female bassist and hell, even initials of their name! Hell, compare the guitar riffs from Lazy Eye to Drown! Granted they’ve only so far imitated one of the styles the Pumpkins have played over the years, but still!

No I completely agree, Silversun Pickups can’t hold a candle to the legacy Billy has created for the Pumpkins, and you honestly won’t find anyone more in “camp Pumpkins” than I am, but at the same time there’s not an imitator of Pearl Jam that can hold a candle to their legacy either, and Billy has kind of said that here with his “at least he’s Eddie Vedder” comment. There’s even a comment from him somewhere saying that there’s honour in having competitions in bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana, over bands like Bush.
Talk about ego! Billy’s just insecure. I can’t think of many singers who would want to imitate him the way Scott Stapp imitates Vedder. His voice doesn’t have the quality that imitators are looking for. Creed as a band doesn’t imitate PJ as much as Stapp just steals from Eddie. Maybe some bands are ripping off the SP sound, but not Corgan’s voice (because it’s not that great to begin with). People need to separate the two.
The reason people imitate Vedder more is because he is a better singer.

Re: Silversun Pickups, I don’t really see them as Pumpkins imitators. Influenced by the Gish/SD era, certainly, but I think they’re doing their own thing. Actually I wish they would take more of a page from the Pumpkins playbook, because I think they’ve become pretty static and predictable. I like their first two albums but “Bloody Mary” has got to be one of the dullest songs I’ve ever heard. Even Pumpkins critics agree that the sound constantly shifted (for better or worse).

I am a huge Pearl Jam fan especially when it comes to their later stuff like Yield ,Binaural, Riot ACT, Pearl Jam Pearl Jam, and 2009′s Backspacer. I’m also learning more about the Smashing Pumpkins because of their new album that just came out.But it is a shame and a downright holier than thou lie when people make fun of Billy Corgan for having a mental illness or whatever. What if Billy Corgan does truly have a mental illness? Does this automatically make him a nut? I mean small minded immoral people ganged up on JESUS CHRIST in the Bible, and also called HIM a nut. So I guess Billy is in pretty good company since a bunch of hypocrites called CHRIST a nut when they were really making fun of themselves. Billy should move to England because England accepts eccentrics way more than America does. If people knew the truth about mental illness, they would not make fun of the mentally ill. Small minded prejudiced gossipy people are the ones that are the nuts, and the ones who are dangerous according to the real truth about what mental illness really is. Don’t believe profilers and the media when it comes to the mentally ill. They lie about this subject almost every time, and more than most people believe these lies, and then put an overwhelming prejudiced stigma against the mentally ill and mental health. I’m am deeply religious and I have major differences with Vedders view of world politics and religious matters but I respect him sincerely because he’ is genuine ,honest and real…..there’s no guess work with him and I respect that….a man doesn’t have to agree with me on my personel beliefs for me to respect him
