PEARL JAM TO FINISH NEW ALBUM BEFORE SOUNDGARDEN KICK OFF NEW ALBUM TOUR IN NOVEMBER

By: 3 August 2012 60 Comments

Thanks to Martin from Slovenija for sending this recap of Soundgarden/Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron’s new interview with Rhythm Magazine.  Here is what Matt said about Soundgarden and Pearl Jam:

-He is going to finish recording the Pearl Jam record first, suporting Soundgarden’s record starts in November

-It was his idea to make a new Soundgarden record

-Soundgarden’s new album (still untitled) is ready and waiting for an october relase

-He tried to bring some african/percussion grooves into some of new songs, which is kinda hard to do,but it happened naturally for them. But those types of grooves are over super heavy-duty guitar riffs

-The band jammed for about two months just writing and working out music before going into the studio. They went into the studio at the beginning of 2011

-Drumtracks he is most proud of are Jesus Christ Pose, Spoonman, Black Hole Sun and The Fixer

-He feels fortunate to have another opportunity with Soundgarden

-His goal (when he got together with Soundgarden again) was to get (as a band) a little bit quieter and listen better without losing any of the power

-The only thing that takes adjustment (regarding switching between Soundgarden and Pearl Jam) is volume – Soundgarden being a lot louder

I’m pretty sure what he meant was he wanted focus more on playing clear and consistent rather than just loud and proud. SG fans know they use to not be the most consistent band live (take Live on I-5 for instance). I think the shows are a lot more consistent now than they were 15+ years ago. Of course they had their hey-day back in 92-95, but even then consistency was an issue. I think he just wanted them to try and be the best band they could be.

  • Adam said:

pj’s record comment by him comes across like…

“uh, yeah, new boring pearl jam sometime soon…you know, uh, it was fun…uh…eddie such a great singer…uh…”

then the soundgarden talk is him fucking excited as hell.

if you hear Cornell from 89 to 94, (the year he tore/ severely strained his vocal chords, costing him his legendary 5th Octave, he uses 4 octaves and has now become very proficient at ‘headvoice’ singing for when he used to be able to REALLY fucking blow you away with his extra octave.) If you hear him b4 the fateful 1994 Superunknown tour, he shows you that his and Soundgardens golden era was 89 to 94.

  • SuperSG said:

I compared Cornells high register from 2012 and 1991. In 91 his voice this subtle ‘power’, or substance behind the 5th Octave Wails and 4th octave screams. That isnt the case today (discounting a few marvelous Beyond the Wheel performances …nudedragon/red rocks/Bill Graham Civic Center.) He sounds like he is lacking trademark power in the lower register as he sings using 4th Octave headvoice. That mid level tone in his yells, the power from his stomach/core area is lacking.

  • ChrisPBacon said:

They will tour together that would be great that way Matt can so both.

  • ChrisPBacon said:

    do both I mean

  • Junior said:

His voice is much better now imo. He’s actually singing “properly.” His range and power are obviously still there, and he even stated so when asked about his range in an interview not too long ago. I also feel like he’s far more consistent live singer now than he ever was. Just my opinions based off all the shows I’ve personally watched and been to.

  • Dreux said:

Cornell live, back in the day, had more power and easily segued between registers, but I’ve seen numerous performances where he struggled to stay in key and sort of mistakenly jumped between octaves here and there. Now, though he lacks the power and a decent percentage of his range, he has much more control and his gruffer voice, I feel, suits certain songs really well. The only real downside to his performances with Soundgarden lately is that he really strains his voice a lot. In his songbook shows, however, he hits it out of the park every time (from what I’ve seen).

  • Dreux said:

Actually, one of my all-time favorite live vocal performances was when Soundgarden played “Beyond the Wheel” at the Showbox, from their first performance since reuniting. I actually prefer it to the Ultramega OK version.

  • Junior said:

All that being said, with the incredible amount of control he has over his voice now, I’m pretty positive his studio singing for this new album will be much better than what we’ve all heard on their previous albums. :-D

  • Junior said:

That Showbox performance of Beyond The Wheel is probably the greatest vocal performance that I’ve seen from anyone. There’s no denying his present power and range after watching that.

  • NickG said:

I’ll be honest, I was pretty disappointed with “Live to Rise”. So here’s to hoping the new album is awesome, and the first song ISN’T titled “Alpha Punk”.

  • NickG said:

But even if it is titled “Alpha Punk”, as long as it’s good that’s all that matters haha.

  • SuperSG said:

I agree with you guys, i had seen them live at the Zenith in Germany. He sounded good. I think Cornell is the best singer of all time, and as a Cornell-ologist, i stated my previous comments in earnest. The Nudedragons performance in full, was not as epic as the BTW performance alone leads people to believe. I may be one of Soundgarden and Cornells biggest fans, but im also a critic.

  • Junior said:

Yeah I hear you. I’m a pretty big critic of Chris myself. Those 4 guys have taken what I thought I knew about music and completely changed that and showed me a whole new world. Life changing really. So I can’t help but have super high expectations with anything they do. I get disappointed by Cornell at times, but him disappointing me live occurred way more often in his “prime” vs. what I’ve been seeing of him since their reunion. He has mastered his voice imo.

  • SuperSG said:

Thats cuz people expected sooo much out of someone so gifted vocally. You expected nothing less than legendary when you went to hear him, right? And when you dont hear studio quality stuff, you get a feeling of dissapointment, even if the performance is great compared to other singers live performances.( i say studio quality cuz artists give thier best efforts when recording for the final, album version)

Cornell def has up and down moments but he’s human, sometimes it’s nice to be reminded of that. I he’s not perfect but when he’s on, he has no rivals. The only way he can maintain his garden voice is to not do a 50 date tour.

His range when doing the acoustic shows is unreal. The notes he hits in say hello 2 heaven, fell on black days are mindboggling. Best voice ever imo

  • King Cornell said:

What everyone has said is correct. Cornell is nearing 50, guys. Let’s be real and not yearn for the past and let ourselves get disappointed. He is better in some stuff and worse in some other areas. It’s the life of a vocalist. I rather hear lower register songs on the new album that he can ace over the next “Fresh Tendrils” where he used to be able to belt it and I doubt he could now the same way. It’s like a pitcher, if I can use a baseball analogy. When you can’t throw as hard, you are forced to really learn to make the most of what you have and perfect the nuances. That’s Cornell in 2012 and beyond.

  • Dreux said:

    @King Cornell

    Couldn’t agree more.

  • Rodrigo said:

Agree with shadow of the sun, even Geddy Lee still has a good voice in his early 60 he lost some of his great singing from the 70′s and the 80′s. I’m still very frustrated when the people said that Axl Rose is better singer than Chris Cornell, every fan should known that the singing of axl is product of his influence by Cornell. So…yeah there you go metalheads

  • GenXLady said:

Axl Rose is not a better singer than Chris Cornell.

So… new SG album is going to be released in October, then possible world tour with SG to promote the new album, and the new PJ album drops in February/March… wow, these guys are going to be very very busy!!!!

I kant wait!!! but…we are almost in the middle of August…just one month and a half for the release of SG album…and we don’t know anything about the title, tracklist, artwork…

New MUSE album is announced to be released in October too, and the revealed the tracklist, album title and all that stuff like a month ago.

They didnt, so now i need you to follow their next tour as religiously as you cover Billcos complaining stuff. Pleeease Brett?

My girlfriends Uncle works at the studio Soundgarden have been recording in and I asked him about the stuff Mayan is saying and he said none of it’s true (Surprise, surprise). He said from what he’s heard they’re definately going in a slightly softer direction but if you liked ‘Live To Rise’ or Chris’s solo work then you’re going to love the new album… I’ll try and find out more info for you guys but I’ve probably already said too much, he’s not supposed to discuss artists work outside of thd studios when it’s big acts like SG.

  • Junior said:

    ^^^^LMAO. This guy.

dont the fuck with impatient fans DownUpside.

I don’t have time for enemies on message boards so let’s just enjoy the new music when it comes. I will of course be enjoying it slightly earlier than the rest of you, sorry to rub it in, just one of the benefits of having friends in the music biz :-)
