Here’s another quote from Soundgarden/Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron’s new interview with Rhythm Magazine that we reported on last week:
On Soundgarden’s reunion and tension they may have had during their later days in 1996/1997: “Sure, it all became water under the bridge, we were never really mad at each other, it just came to a point where we were totally sick of each other,” Cameron reveals, placing emphasis on the word ‘totally’ to further drive home the point. “We just needed a break because we started from scratch and went to a pretty huge pinnacle of success. I think that whole process completely burnt us out. It’s good that we took what I consider to be a sabbatical. When we came back there were tons of really good ideas and the spark had not gone away at all. I don’t know how much longer it’s going to last but I’m really happy that it’s got to this point.”

As a fan who knows better than to take anything for granted with SG, I stand by me view of a couple years ago of “Just give me a new album and everything else is icing on top”. It would disappoint, but not stun me if by this time next year their album support tour becomes “we’re going to take an indefinite break so catch us while you can” tour. Hoping it won’t happen but this comment and the recent concerts where people have said “Hey, their energy/interest seems a bit spotty” makes me a bit nervous. Before anyone accuses me of attacking SG or wanting to see them jump around onstage or something, I am not. Just gotta not get carried away with taking too much for granted with a band that has no obligation to anyone, and rightly so (beyond that damn B-sides album!)

Interesting comment to make. I feel like ideally they’d release the new album, tour, then probably go be inscribe for a little while so they can all do their own thing. Thaw obviously just an assumption but I’d be surprised if that wasn’t necessary or even desired by the band. We’ll find out though. Just really want that new album, a US tour, and those B-Sides!
I’m gonna have to agree with you there, King. And yes, I do want that B-Sides album. They’re one of the few bands I love that have yet to put a compilation or box set of their outtakes and B-Sides.

I think if the album spawns say 3-4 hit singles they might even do another album within 3-4 years.
I don’t think they’ll break up immediately after the album drops. I can easily see them doing a tour, then taking a “break”, and then getting back together again after a year or so, wash, rinse, repeat. If the album does really well (which I hate to say, it probably won’t, though I wish it will), than I can see them sticking together. Fan support is everything.
