CBS BUYS ‘SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT’ SITCOM FROM BIG BANG THEORY WRITER
Found this on Mark Yarm‘s blog.
A writer of the Big Bang Theory, a stupid run of the mill CBS laugh track sitcom, has sold a new family sitcom titled Smells Like Teen Spirit.
From the Hollywood Reporter piece: “The multicamera comedy revolves around an 18-year-old budding entrepreneur who forgoes Harvard and instead opts to launch a multibillion-dollar Internet company from his garage with the assistance of his sister, best friend and his 1990s indie-rock parents.” (Full story here; H/T Jason Baldwin)

Lame
oh fuck no, god damn it
There’s not enough rich people on TV. Kurt would be proud to lend his songs title to such a great show idea.
Christ Almighty..
Watch more than 2 minutes of Big Bang Theory, then see if you should label it as a “stupid run of the mill CBS laugh track sitcom”. I dare you.
Lol wtf?
the big bang theory is shit
Big bang theory is a good well thought out sitcom. Nirvana was the mainstream when they were around I don’t see what the big deal is. They were a trendy popular band period.
Big bang is fantastic, this article is the first I’ve heard anyone bash it and it’s on its 5th or 6th season. To each their own I guess.
This new show doesn’t seem like it will last
Easy on the “rape” word
Ok now I’ve had it with all the snobby kids around here, “The big band theory” is totally awesome. Intelligent, well-written, hilarious, great acting. Period.
Haven’t watched Big Bang Theory. Why can’t they call it something else? The two would get confused when they’re brought up in conversation. Just saying. Like when I search up Kurt Cobain fanfic and I somehow end up with Glee because there’s a character called Kurt. But also, wasn’t Kurt all “anti commercialism, anti corporate asshole” even if Nirvana were trendy?
If Kurt was anti commercial he wouldn’t have signed a major label contract made music videos and played on tv and award shows. Kurt came across as an arrogant asshole from the interviews I ass obviously I didn’t know him personally but the actions of his band proved he was in it to make money and he didn’t shy away from those opportunities no matter what he may have said to contradict that.
Fuckin CBS. YOU ALWAYS DO THIS.
“1990s indie-rock parents”
It wasnt even called indie rock in the 90′s. It was still called alternative.
“CBS is raping the legacy of Nirvana and grunge.”
I’ve read some stupid shit on this website, but this statement may be the dumbest.
Big Bang Theory is terrible, like most laugh track sitcoms. Trust me, I’ve also seen more than 2 minutes of it.
I’m sure this will be the same.
@louderthanshit333 Maybe you just don’t get it. Dude.
Good. Rape away their “legacy”. Nirvana sucked, and they were the poster boys for all that “no sellout anti-corportate this and that hypocrisy”. Remember that stupid Rolling Stone cover with Cobain wearing the shirt “corporate magazines still suck”? You can’t have it both ways buddy. Nirvana was RATMing before RATM was RATMing.
yeah,im pretty sure kurt would shit.
this is why kurt killed himself,he seen shit like this coming.
Yeah, I don’t envision this show being any good though Big Bang Theory is okay. They’re probably just going to throw in a few references to Kurt Cobain and grunge and have the parents be these over the top characters that are trying to be “1990s indie rock”. The characters will probably just be cheesy and and won’t represent any of the ideals of 90s alternative music.
are you idiots kidding me! imitation is the greatest form of flattering! why would you all be against someone using the song title-the show creators obviously like it and Nirvana so damn much that they are using the title for their show!how can you see thst as a bad thing? nirvana and kurt are commercialized pop at thid point anyway-regardless of if kurt wanted it that way or not. and why would you call Big Bang Theory lame? because it’s too pop?because it’s not cool enough? whatever.you losers will never change-including you,Brett.
There is just SO nothing wrong with this story. AND “THE BIG BANG THEORY” IS GENIOUS!
I’m with @red her. Flattering if anything. Acknowledging the importance of Nirvana and grunge 20 years ago is what this is.
I can’t believe this. This is like an SNL skit. Kurt would be rolling in his grave. WTF
All I’m going to say is, if anyone here thinks that ‘Big Bang Theory’ is “good comedy” they should immediately wash out their eyeballs and ear canals with some detergent and go on a ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ marathon. Thank you.
as long as Teen Spirit is not the opening theme music for the show…
lets hope this show has a “jeremy” style ending with the character blowing his brains out in his garage.
@breadbitten I watch both big bang and Philadelphia. Both are well written. The league is a great show if u like philly
Once Pearl Jam learns about this, how long will it be till they try to cash in on a “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” sitcom?
I enjoy Big Bang Theory, but the laugh track on the show is distracting and terrible. The should would be so much better without the laugh track.
Although, I don’t really like them using the title “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.
here we are now, entertain us
@nick
“They were a trendy popular band period.”
Uh, no? Mainstream doesn’t equal trendy, especially when, in this case, they kind of inadvertently started the trend, and then proceeded to attempt to deviate from that image.
Just the other day, I said that I hope there’s a grunge sitcom similar to That 70′s Show but for us Grunge fans who love the ’90s.
Lately I’ve been thinking the same thing, I shouldn’t have gone to college, then grad school, and I should have just been in a band from, like, you know the age of eight. LOL
Whoever thinks the Big Bang theory is a good show, must have parents who are siblings. That show is just a mainstream depiction of what popular people think nerds are like.
I like Big Bang Theory. It is a funny diversion from the daily grind with some goofy comedy. I don’t see what is wrong with that. I think some of the “reality” shows on these days are way more ridiculous. Big Bang Theory doesn’t portray itself as anything more than light entertainment. Some of the “realities” in the reality shows are a sham, and it has created this whole creepy celebrity culture around the people on them. I’ll take a sitcom over that. As for the Smells Like Teen Spirit…ehh…not too sure.
This is fucking disgusting.
I hope all bands rise up against this garbage.
This is the fucking world we live in.
Are they gpoin to have Frances Bean come in for an audition? She probably will because guess what??? She’s a fucking poser!
Hate that comment if you want but, seriously, yeah you’re pretty and one of your parents was a rock hero, but what else can you do for us?
I love that song and therefore it really sucks that anyone would try to make that into a sitcom, so better to just have grunge in the title of the sitcom.
I was actually always hoping for a That 90s Show, but now that it’s almost here, I jsut hope they do it right. They’ve had Kurt references in shows before that were spot on, and I always liked how Kurt wore the Corporate Magazines Still Suck shirt for the Rolling Stone thing. If they made it like how The Simpsons made fun of Fox even though they were on Fox, like staying true to the anti-corporate even if you are mainstream thing and genuine ideals, with good music, then I could see it being good. The way to fix the mainstream is to both have good things in it, as well as things that talk about how it’s bad to be mainstream in the sense that they want to be rich and famous and all that. People liked that Kurt was mainstream because there was a voice for people who liked music and didn’t care about fame to be in the mainstream, so like a take it down from the inside out, and get us outcasts in there to break it down, sort of thing.
Brett, you should make a poll about this.
Option A: A sitcom called “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a blasphemy!
Option B: A sitcom called “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a nice and potentially funny tribute.
Let the readers’ majority decide.
Since Teen Spirit was deodorant, it’s hardly rape to reuse what was reused.
Big Bang Theory is actually a very funny show, I enjoy.
I say the do a pilot and 6 eps and SLTS will fail. No worries.
PS: It’s CBS : they probably won’t reference anything of importance.
Anyone watch “Shit My Dad Says” with William Shatner. It was nice to see Shatner but the only time it was funny was when they poked fun at the myth of Shatner (had him sing, had him reference impressions of him, had him hitting on the ladies,….)
I don’t think Nirvana fans or fans of any given music genre will have anything to worry about. I was actually more upset about whatever SNL-ish show did a bit where they had a guy dressed like Kurt in a skit about dead rock stars in a diner. Totally offensive – I’ve blocked out the name of the show or the details of the bit, but not how horrified I was that they crossed the line (several other artists were bit played stereotypically, it was jaw droppingly in poor taste).
Actually it sounds from the description more like the Steve Jobs story, switched gender.
Now Vedder needs a show.
YUCK.
Lame. Its an insulting way to sell a show – grab onto a title and attach to something that has nothing to do with song to sell a concept. Vague cliched references to the 90s do not constitute using that song. This is a case of lazy writers milking off of someone elses success. Disgusting!
Let’s just hope it bombs…or that the remaining musicians sue. Given the uproar over ‘Guitar Hero’ I think this will get heated.
Big Bang doesn’t use a laugh track. There’s a live audience. Also, that has no bearing on the quality of the show. Cheers, MASH, I Love Lucy and All in the Family all used laugh tracks. I will bet any amount of money this show will never air.
this has already been done quite well here:
