Hmmm. Not sure what to think. Usually I give Mark 4 stars on everything, but this seems like there was no consideration for production. Was the goal to not get played on the all-Christmas satellite channels? His voice is so good, it deserves to be recorded the right way.

This is awesome! I love the Rocky Erickson cover too at the end.

I disagree. The lo-fi production adds character and depth to it. I love it!

Poor production?! Are you nuts?? This is fucking amazing! Damn his voice only gets better with age! Damn I need a download of this ASAP.

FINALLY! DARK MARK!!! BWAHAHAHAHA! MERRY X MAS!!

He blew my mind with that high note on O Holy Night. I didn’t know he could still get up there!

I thought it was kind of cool! A dark take on Christmas songs, but in a more somber way.

O Holy Night … O Holy Shit. Awesome!

How the hell can we get this?

His rocked the fuck out of O Holy Night! I didn’t know he could still hit those high notes either! Burn The Flames is awesome too, I like the part where he’s kind of talking fast in the song. They should Mark in the stores while you shop for Christmas presents!

O Holy Night is perfect, wow–seriously this guy only seems to get better with age. Almost sounded like he was channeling Buckley on that version. Quite an outstanding little collection of songs, We Three Kings and Burn the Flames are killer too.

More selling out by these ex grunge bums. Ho Ho Ho to the bank LAME where is Scott STP for a duet . LMAO

too many negative nancies on this sight

I think this would of been selling out if he marketed the shit out of it and made a cheesy music video. The fact is the dude probably just decided to go in and have some fun recording some of these songs and sell them exclusively at his shows. Now tell me how is that selling out?

  • Paul Kneitz (author) said:

^Exactly. There was no marketing of the album and we only found out about it through people who went to Mark’s European show. Mark did bluesy interpretations of non-commercial Christmas songs, and recorded them lo-fi with little to no production. How is that a cash grab?

  • Elle said:

Oh!! My My, O Holy Night is pure love, This album has a dark Celtic sound to it.

  • Lost Cause said:

This is pretty cool. I wonder when he did his? I have to laugh at the fact that he calls himself “Dark Mark.” I cannot wait to get my copy due to the extreme kindness of one of my message board friends at onewhiskey.

I love the haunting quality to the songs. O Holy Night is amazing. The song recordings almost sounds other world like.

I was flat out impressed with this work. Although I am not a Christian, nor of any religious affiliation, and do not believe in a higher power, I still see this music as his right to perform, and this is not a cash grab. I think he is not pushing religion on anyone here. Although I won’t listen to the lyrics in depth (much as I do with Nirvana replays on the radio) the music is crisp, and the vocals are excellent. I do think its just as obnoxious for a person of my religious beliefs to criticize someone else for having them, as it is for them to push them onto us. This is not an attempt to push religion onto anyone. Hey he likes Christ, he likes Christmas. I don’t. This is what America is about. He can sing what he wants, and we can listen to what he wants. I am so happy Mr. Lannegan is still performing and hanging in there. This is another feather in his hat. I think he put something on the table that is a quality product, and he deserves credit for it, regardless of our religious disagreements.

Mark Lanegan is just the best fucking artist around these days. Everything he touches turns to pure gold. His taste is impeccable. A true genius. Seeing him in Detroit earlier this year was one of the highlights of my life. Long may he live…

Saw Lanegan past sunday… anyone, just go if he is around, you won’t regret it. Witnessing “Harborview Hospital” and “Methamphetamine Blues” live is a lifetime experience.

    Dudes, this is BAD ass.

Favorite track was “Down in Yon Forest”

  • Cornell Forever said:

I am just discovering Mark and his music is breathtaking. Blues Funeral is one of the best albums I have heard in years.

  • Scott McLean said:

He should do a modernized “The Return Of The Giant Hogweed” (Genesis song) or something really heavy sounding like it or something else scary for Christmas. Nobody will care and it’s just for fantasy sake and for some fun. We can all listen to the Christmas songs without having it be a Grunge Christmas! haha

  • Scott McLean said:

Mark ought to do an album with Echo & The Bunnymen and that could have some very DARK possibilities.

  • Nanette said:

I think this reminds me of Johhny Cash.
