MATT CAMERON TALKS HIS DRUMMING STYLE, HOW HE TRIES TO ADD TO SONGS

By: 22 November 2012 17 Comments

Soundgarden/Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron is feautured on the cover of the latest issue of Drum magazine. Here are a couple of quotes from the interview, mainly focusing on his style and how he tries to contribute to songs:

“As a drummer I’ve always strived to play music and not just play chops over a song. That approach does require analysis and I’ve done most of that in home recording. That’s been a real effective way for me to create a drum part or [realize] how a percussion part might add to a drum part or how the drums are fitting with a guitar pattern or if I’m accenting the guitar pattern too much or not enough.”

“Obviously, I don’t play jazz, but that has always been an influence on the way that I play. I’ve always strived to be musical in that sense. But when I break my drumming down it is pretty basic. I’m not always impressed by what my drum track sounds like. I’ve always strived to make it more musical over the years. One thing I did accomplish on the new Soundgarden record is that the drum parts are pretty musical in a way that I haven’t done in the past.”

His drumming on King Animal is soothing. I still don’t think he fits well with Pearl Jam, sorry.

I loved his studio work with the Smashing Pumpkins and Our Lady Peace.

Sorry, “is he on” … Matt totally adds to PJ, and was a big-time re-energizer , according to them

Matt is one of my favorite drummers, top three for sure. His work with Soundgarden is truly sublime, he’s John Bonham to Soundgarden’s Led Zeppelin.

I agree that he doesn’t add much to Pearl Jam. I’ve seen them live with Abbruzzese, Irons, and Cameron, and I’d say Cameron had the least impact on their sound. Yes, this is just an opinion so don’t get all pissy with me. I think Cameron’s a good, disciplined drummer, but his style fits better with Soundgarden. As for Pearl Jam, I thought Irons was the best of their last three.

Totaly agree with you Shayla. I’d be happy to see Irons on PJ again. I listened last Wallflowers with Jack on draums and I got kind of happy, but unfortunatelly the songs are so weak… only drums worth the album

I haven’t heard the album yet but Matt’s drumming is GREAT on Been Away Too Long.

Many, many years ago when Lars Ulrich was asked to name his fav drummer, he said Matt. Well, we already knew it, even before Lars’s opinion.

Matt long ago switched to Yahama, but does he still use Keplinger snares? The steel snare? The can-can snare sound on Superunknown and on during many 90′s live era is classic/his true signature.
