TOM MORELLO REMINISCES ON HEARING “SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT” FOR THE FIRST TIME
In another gem from the Rolling Stone Q&A, Morello talked about hearing the Nirvana staple “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time.
“They [the band] cranked that thing in the truck, and we listened to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ like, 15 times,” Morello recalls. “I mean, now it’s a song and a band and a record that is oversaturated in a way that I don’t know that I’m ever going to get off on ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ again. But I remember that first night, very clearly, those guys cranking it up. We were moshing around in the parking lot of our rehearsal space.”

Smells Like Teen Spirit is probably my least favorite Nirvana song, but if it weren’t for that song, we probably wouldn’t have this site right now.
PLEASE GET YOUR OWN NAME
SLTS isn’t my favorite Nirvana song, but it’s definitely one of them. And it has the BEST melody ever written. That was Kurt’s primary talent – snatching those incredibly compelling melodies out of the ether and delivering them in a powerful way.
NIRVANA!!!!!!!!!
OUTSHINED
OUTSHINED
OUTSHINED
Best melody even written???
Man, i was feeling kinda of low this morning, but that has picked me right up. That is some funny shit right there. You should be on stage!
*ever
How could someone visiting this site frequently seriously say they don’t care about “Smells like teen spirit”!? Come on.
I cared about it when i was 12, but that was a long time ago. I can’t listen to Nirvana at all these days, they just don’t do it for me anymore. To say that SLTS has the best melody ever written is offensive to musicians everywhere. OK, you may like the song, but that statement is utter nonsense.
The only music from that period that i still really care about is Pearl Jam, The Screaming Trees, and the Pumpkins. And Pearl Jam. Did i mention Pearl Jam? Them too.
Speaking of music from that period, what ever happened to L7?
Still listen to Nirvana songs. They still rocks.
