Alice In Chains will release “Hollow,” off of their currently untitled fifth studio album, on December 18th. The band recently finished recording the album, set for release in early 2013. The band have created an interactive challenge for fans on Instagram:

challenge is real stupid but excited to hear it. hopefully this song is up to par with the singles from BGWTB and hopefully the deep cuts dont suck like all the horrible tracks from BGWTB

I’m hoping for great things from this album. I seriously just hope they don’t screw it up with loud mastering. I hardly listen to BGWTB because of this – it is just so flat and tiring to listen to.
I think William is a great singer and works well with the AIC sound – I hope he gets more space on this album and I believe he will this time.

Spoonman, I agree to an extent on Black Gives Way to Blue. I like some of the deep cuts but there are a few I’m not that into. The singles are definitely the standouts on that album though, and probably some of the best rock singles in the last few years. If Hollow is a hit, and Soundgarden release A Thousand Days Before and Bones of Birds as singles, we could be hearing some good stuff on the radio in early 2013….
I completely disagree, the deep cuts on BGWTB are excellent. I will also say that BGWTB is a better album than King Animal.
Alice in Chains should just change their band name….Thats all I care for.

Yesterday I was exited about a rumor somewhere claiming that their first single would be released in January, so to get it even sooner is great news.
BGWTB is OK and the this is not my AiC crap because of Laynes death is fine. Just stop buying and listening to any new music just keep playing the old stuff.

But yeah I think this next AIC album has of good chance of being better than King Animal. This is coming from a guy that loves both bands equally.

I am really excited to hear this because I really enjoyed Black Gives Way to Blue, especially the track “Private Hell”. I have been a fan of Alice in Chains since 1992 and loved them with Layne and Jerry on vocals and love them just as much with Jerry and Will. I wonder if Will will do more tracks like “Last of My Kind” on this album because that is a favorite of mine. I love this band. Yes they have had some personnel changes,but will continue to support them and the music they make.

After all the recent debate on here, I gave BGWTB another listen after a long hiatus. It really is a great album. More Will on the next one would be good.

@OUTSHINED Why should they change the name because of Layne dying? First, its because Layne was in Alice in Chains before any of them were in the first place, so it feels like they just replaced him.
I feel like they just kept the name so they won’t be forgotten. Alice in Chains is already a name the world remembers.
While performing with Alice N’ Chains, Staley met guitarist Jerry Cantrell while working at Music Bank rehearsal studios, where the two struggling musicians became roommates, and lived in a rehearsal space they shared. Alice N’ Chains soon disbanded and Staley joined a funk band who at the time also required a guitarist. Staley asked Cantrell to join as a sideman. Cantrell agreed on condition that Staley join Cantrell’s band, which at the time included drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr. Eventually the funk project broke up and in 1987 Staley joined Cantrell’s band on a full-time basis, playing in clubs around the Pacific Northwest, often stretching 15 minutes of material into a 45-minute set. The band played a couple of gigs calling themselves several different monikers, including Diamond Lie, which was the name of Cantrell’s previous band, before they eventually took the name that Staley’s previous band had initially flirted with – Alice in Chains.

“Black Gives Way To Blue” and “King Animal” are both great albums by great bands. I grew up with those bands and I’m very glad to have both of them back. I’ll gladly continue to pay to see them live and buy their records. The dung-slinging back and forth on this site about those albums is fucking ridiculous. Who are you trying to convince? You don’t like them, don’t listen. You’ve taken your stupid shots at them. Done. Shut the fuck up now.

I miss Layne so much. I still get very emotional every time I listen to Nutshell and Rotten Apple. He is such a huge influence musically to me. He was just such a cool guy. Anyway, I am so looking forward to hearing this track on the 18th. I am sure it will be great. I am sure Jerry and the boyz will not let us down.
Wow, did not expect to hear from them again this soon. Well, they sure aren’t wasting any time. Usually Jerry takes at least 5 years in between albums. Looks like he is not fucking around this time. Time to get back to work. I trust Jerry’s musical creativity though. I don’t think AIC is going to let us down.
Now we will have both Soundgarden and AIC with albums out at the same time. Could an SG/AIC tour be on the horizon????

Yea it took Jerry 5 years in between his solo material. This is an entirely different creative atmosphere for Jerry in AiC. Its been a little over three years since BGWTB and for an alice record that is pretty long. I think they would’ve released another album sooner but they really wanted promote BGWTB and let it sink in for both new and old fans. I believe they toured for a solid 2 years before even getting a long break.
