WHO WILL REPLACE SCOTT WEILAND AS STONE TEMPLE PILOTS’ LEAD SINGER?

By: 8 December 2012 26 Comments

If Slash is telling the truth and Stone Temple Pilots have indeed fired their lead singer Scott Weiland (like we reported yesterday), what should STP do if they decide to carry on without him?  Have no fear Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo, and Eric Kretz!  GrungeReport.net has a list of the top candidates for the STP lead singer job.

AXL ROSE- Axl and Scott have quite the history, in March 2006 Weiland attacked Rose for claiming Slash had attempted to contact him and trash his Velvet Revolver bandmates, “Get in the ring. Go to the gym, motherfucker, or if you prefer, get a new wig, motherfucker. I think I’ll resist the urge to ‘stoop’ to your level. Oh shit, here it comes, you fat, botox-faced, wig-wearin’ fuck!” Robert DeLeo also yelled “Come out Axl!” at Scott Weiland at an STP show in May 2008 when he refused to come out of his trailer. Maybe Robert’s plea for Axl was a sign of things to come?

WILLIAM DUVALL- How about rather than just firing Scott Weiland, STP trade him to Alice In Chains for their singer William DuVall?  DuVall has proven that he can front one iconic 90′s band, why not another?

SCOTINA WEILAND- If Scott really wants back in the band, why not put on a wig and claim to be Scotina Weiland, Scott’s female cousin?  Cousin Scotina can take over, Scott can still pick up his paycheck, and everybody is happy!

DAVE COUTTS- A reunion of epic proporations!  The long awaited return of Talk Show, the band 3/4 of STP were briefly in back in 1997 during the first of their three fallouts with Scott Weiland.  This time though they could use the STP name and have a shot at commercial success!

TAYLOR MOMSEN- In a choice that would be sure to excite GrungeReport.net head reporter Magic Mike Mazzarone, why don’t STP inject some youth into the band with The Pretty Reckless lead singer Taylor Momsen?  Momsen is a huge fan of 90′s bands, has feuded with Courtney Love, what’s not to like?

SCOTT STAPP- Scott Stapp has claimed that if he had killed himself in 2004 he would have become a ‘Kurt Cobain martyr type,’ well why not front an iconic Grunge era band?  I don’t think there’s an STP fan out there who wouldn’t die to see Stapp and STP perform “Marlins Will Soar.”

BILLY CORGAN- BillCo has talked about his dislike of 90′s bands who rely on nostalgia and greatest hits setlists to cash in, why doesn’t he put his money where his mouth is and get Stone Temple Pilots back on track by creating a new album with them?

TIMBALAND- A few years ago Chris Cornell went to Timbaland when he wanted to change things up musically, it’s time for Stone Temple Pilots to follow suit!  Perhaps Chris Cornell could even sing on a few tracks and we could get a Chris Cornell/Timbaland reunion mixed in with a new STP album.

SCOTT WEILAND GETS THE RIGHTS TO STONE TEMPLE PILOTS NAME- Another possibility is that Scott Weiland sues the DeLeo brothers and Eric Kretz for ownership of the Stone Temple Pilots name, and replaces them with his solo band (Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts).

What do you think should be the future of Stone Temple Pilots?  Leave your feedback in the comments section.

Haha, what the fuck is this!? It’s pretty funny, though. (:

Where’s Richard Patrick? Haha this was really funny, loved the Duvall part.. All in all I really hope scott wasn’t fired tho

How about Richard Patrick of Filter? When Patrick worked with the DeLeo brothers in Army of Anyone, they had that song Goodbye that was fantastic. I reckon they could top that if they put their minds to it.

If Scott has left STP, I really don’t see them continuing on as STP. If they didn’t use the name in ’97 or the in the ’00s, as Talk Show and AOA, no reason to think that they will use it now.

Personally, I really wouldn’t want them to continue on as STP with a new singer. If a younger band (Van Halen, AC/DC) changes singers or if a singer is deceased (Alice In Chains), that’s one thing, but for an established band that’s 20+ years old, where the original singer is still around, it just wouldn’t seem right to have another singer up there with the other three, singing those songs.

Hopefully they work things out. Until then, I look forward to more Weiland solo albums, as his first two are great (better than the last STP, IMHO). And I’m sure that the DeLeo brothers and Eric Kretz will release something good.

I agree with your points Dan, but what about Iron Maiden?

  • PJfan said:

Iron Maiden has one of the most devoted followings of fans in the world, and still pretty much everyone ceased to care when Bruce left in 1994. You can’t say the same for STP about their following.

I would go for AXL Rose…
who else knows what it feels like to be kicked out by your original band?

If they really “fired” Scott, I think it’d be really silly to keep playing with the STP – almost as bad as Journey, or Queen with Paul Rodgers.
Army of Anyone was an interesting matchup but unfortunately the rest of their debut/only album was pretty tame with the exception of “Goodbye”, and I’ve heard in interviews with Robert DeLeo that when he would present song ideas to Richard Patrick, Richard would sometimes look at him and say “WTF is that?” whereas Scott was always open to anything.
They just need to do their own thing and Scott,….well he’ll always be Scott.

ROGER DALTREY! TRY FOR DALTREY!!! or Mark Lanegan!

Richard patrick please, Army of Anyone album its fantastic!

    ^^Exactly.

Scott needs to put the bottle down. That wanna-be fratboy, party-all-the-time routine catches up with you after, you know, 22. He needs to reinvent his image, the shit he’s come out with since 2001 has been terrible: Velvet Revolver was a joke, and the new STP is mediocre at best. I was psyched for both but they wore off after a month or two.

Hell, at this point, I’ll take Pat Lachman from Halford/Damageplan… Might reinvigorate that metal edge they were looking for. Or why not Brant Bjork? They were also looking for that stoner infusion.

There seems to be some kind of cosmic, universal rule where a younger band is allowed to switch lead singers *once*, but if they do it a second time, it flops–Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden (although that Gillian-Sabbath album was great).

I wouldn’t mind seeing AOA reunite. Richard Patrick is stable, sober and a gifted singer/songwriter. If the other three recorded/toured with him, there wouldn’t be any drama. They could actually enjoy themselves, kind of like Slash and Myles Kennedy. The last Filter album was great and Richard is in top-form. I met him when he toured with Bush–really cool, down-to-earth guy and very approachable.

STP is dead time to bury them as core plays Dead and Bloated.

No man can replace SW he is a Silvergun Superman.

I also am retiring from GR as both me and SW are done.

STP without Scott is like Creed without Scott. The remaining band members will be smart enough to not go out and try to replace them. They will just go do something better.

  • Dirk McGurk said:

I don’t know… I can sing a pretty wicked Sex Type Thing on Rock Band. Give me a call Deleo brothers.

I can even probably get my local high school marching band to open up for us like that tour five years ago.

  • Robert said:

I doubt they will really call themselves Stone Temple Pilots with another singer. Think about Talk show and Army For Any For Anyone. I am sure the remaining members of STP will start another band with a new name probably.

  • Magic Mike Mazzarone said:

Honorable mentions on who should replace Scott: Frances Bean Cobain, Courtney Love and of course…

    Magic Mike Mazzarone.

  • Matt said:

Scott Wieland replacing Scott Wieland was a genius call..

  • Mills said:

Corey Taylor has a great shot at this if he wants it.

  • Raj said:

This article is a joke, what an embarrassment. None of the above singers plus I’m still laughing about how Scott Stapp thought killing himself would immortalize him like Cobain.

What a joke Stapp is, an even bigger joke was when Mark Tremonti said Stapp was a better singer than Eddie Vedder. Not by a country mile.
