Shortly after Nirvana’s reunion performance last night (with Paul McCartney standing in for the late Kurt Cobain), Courtney Love responded to Mark Yarm’s Facebook post about the reunion.

You know… I don’t know what irks me most about this post, because there are too many things to list. But I guess I gotta start somewhere if I wanna get my point across:
Brett,
First and foremost, as one writer to another, I respect and appreciate your skills. It was definitely a good read, and I did get a good laugh out of Courtney’s rantings (i’ll adress the content further on). however, my one major bit of criticism to you is regarding your choice of furthering the erroneous notion that this was in fact a “Nirvana Reunion” when in fact there was none. Common sense dictates that unless the rapture actually comes (to the delight of some, and the terror of many) and the dead rise, there cannot possibly be a Nirvana Reunion, since Kurt is 6 feet under, and has been since 1994. The whole notion of a Nirvana Reunion is a moot point, since (and with all due credit and respect to Dave and Krist) Kurt was pretty much the sole driving force of Nirvana.
Now, in case you might be inclined to mistake my input as “just another case of cult-of-personality-itis”, here’s my take on the reformed Alice in Chains (My biggest inspiration as a musician, and my favorite band of all time):
The death of Layne Staley, however predictable in retrospect, still hurt as if it was the least expected thing to happen. So long as Staley was alive (albeit a recluse), A.i.C was on life support. When he died, millions (don’t quote me on that number) of A.i.C fans were greeted with the grim reality of his death, which also meant that the hope that some of us were clinging onto – that he would kick the habit, that A.i.C would be back – died along with him. We started to mourn. Then, out of nowhere, years later, Jerry reformed the band, and under the same name.
This does qualify as a reunion, even without Layne.
Now, before some of you bring out the pitchforks – hear me out:
Layne Staley brought a powerful, talented presence to A.I.C. He is a legend, and the best testament to that is the measurable influence he has had on every big name rock/metal musician you can think of in recent years, although for reasons I cant quite understand, he is still one of the most underrated musicians of his time. Godsmack, Stained, Zakk Wylde, Metallica, Slipknot, Pantera, Dark New Day – the list goes on. Every one of these bands has stated at one point or another how Staley had influenced them.
However, as opposed to Nirvana where Kurt was the sole driving force in the band, Layne was not the sole driving force in A.i.C. He and Jerry Cantrell were the driving force behind A.i.C, like a modern day Lennon and McCartney. Jerry wrote 90% of the guitar riffs and melodies, and 50% of the lyrical content. He’s also got the majority of A.i.C’s most recognisable hits under his belt, and is widely considered amongst the elite musicians of our time. His albums “Degradation Trip” and “Boggy Depot” are widely considered to be an A.i.C bastard side project sans Layne. Therefore, when he decided to reform A.i.C with Mike, Sean and Will as lead singer – it was a situation that at very least merited an unbiased listen before a passing of judgement was to be made.
And in truth?
I love the new A.i.C. Hearing them was like a part of me that died had suddenly resurrected.
However, its not the same without Layne. Its different. Not bad different, just different. As far as I am concerned, A.i.C has two phases, not unlike the Beatles. I like both of these phases, each in its own way.
Nothing and no one will ever compare to A.i.C with Layne at the helm, belting out lyrics with one foot on an amp, looking down at the crowd like an angry angel. But Will has got some serious, serious stones in his jock for agreeing to put himself out there like that and step into those size 20-something shoes worn by Staley. And he does it in his own way – and that deserves respect.
Im in my 30′s, young enough to have been fortunate enough to grow up with a Seattle infused soundtrack to my early life, and old enough to see the absolute crock of shit that music has become in this day and age.
And speaking of an absolute crock of shit – well, here’s Courtney love.
Nobody really cares Courtney. Nobody really ever did.
Well said rains! to put it in short, AIC can and should continue after Layne because of the unique sound. Since there was nothing unique about Nirvana’s sound, I agree, there should not be a reunion and what we saw yesterday is three old friends playing with Paul McCartney. As for the actual performance, the best thing about this thing was Paul McCartney.

I said Jerry worked his ass off writing for them, which he did more so than any other member, undeniably.
And you’ll also note that he isn’t the one who continued using until he died. So I’m at a loss as to understand which part of my statement you are taking umbrage with.
I’m a huge fan btw, and I love Layne, and I don’t really give a shit whether you believe that or not. I’m just not arrogant enough to tell someone as legendary and talented as Jerry Cantrell what he should or shouldn’t do with his musical legacy, and neither should anyone else. If Jerry really threw her an opportunity to keep her band relevant and open for AIC, and then she makes that comment….man, what a horrible person. Not that we didn’t already know that.
Can this be translated into English?
Jack,
This is a reunion of the surviving members of Nirvana, and was referred to as that during the performance by Paul McCartney and on the big screen. When all of the living members of a band perform, I consider that a reunion. People can call them whatever they’d like, I choose to use Nirvana. Yes, it’s not the same Nirvana, but this was the guys who are left doing a performance for a good cause.
@Lindsey
And you sound like an obsessive fan who can’t control his temper when he perceives some slight against a celebrity he likes. If you can see through the red mist to read what I actually wrote, you’ll note that I did not insinuate any of the things you accuse me of.
Especially not a second rater like Courtney love, or a fan, of all people. Who the hell do people think they are?
Jack Rainz – very well said!!!
Brett – as always, good reporting and I totally got what you were saying. Chris J should get off the page if he doesn’t like what you have to say
So Courtney is ripping on Nirvana and Alice In Chains reunions? What about her so-called Hole reunion with the last album? She’s pretty much ripping on herself… And I don’t care, I still enjoy AIC! Black Gives Way To Blue happens to be my second favorite album from them behind Tripod. It is sad that Layne is no longer with here but the band still carries on a legacy and William Duvall is a great asset.

My favorite part of all of that is “accuracy is my middle name.”

“Jerry Cantrell worked his ass off for AIC, wrote pretty much all the music and a lot of the lyrics, and then had his career nearly destroyed by a guy who fucked himself up at his band’s expense.
He has every fucking right to make music as AIC.”
It is funny how you are trying to sugar coat your comment saying that you did not insinuate that Layne did not try and ruin “Jerry’s Band” or his career. Well then, what the hell does ” nearly destroyed” mean in that brain of yours? You clearly meant in your comment what you were thinking so just man up and admit it! So therefore Lindsey’s comment was completely justified. AIC is NOT just Jerry’s band and I really wish people would start to understand that.
AIC is Jerry’s band.
@ Shadows Collide with People
Oh dear, another person with reading comprehension. I did not sugar coat my comment at all. I stated quite clearly that AIC ending is Layne’s fault for continuing to use drugs until he died. Which part of that incredibly simple statement is confusing you?
It’s utterly pathetic when fans like you, who had no part whatsoever in creating AICs music, think they have the right to declare that someone like Jerry Cantrell should not be using a name he has put his whole career into building. I’l say it again, who the hell do you think you are? Nobody, that’s who.
Shes just a moneywhore whos jealous that Nirvana and Alice In Chains are still more famous than Hole and still gets played on Rock Radio stations all over the country, and she knows that if Nirvana gets back together(OF COURSE THEY WONT) but if they do or do more charity shows, shes not getting ANY of it. and it probably makes her even more mad that AIC’s 2009 album, “Black Gives Way To Blue” did WAY better than her 2009 album, “Nobody’s Daughter.” I think its quite funny that shes getting what coming to her
Hello there, just became aware of your blog through Google, and found that it’s truly informative. I am going to watch out for brussels. I will appreciate if you continue this in future. A lot of people will be benefited from your writing. Cheers!
perhaps a bit of real in a world of tech.
yes… layne is dead. scum always take advantage of the defenseless.
funny how they are all nice guys when an interview or camera is about.
scared sheep.
She’s one fkd up biatch. I have no liking for her, but I totally agree with her comments on Layne and AIC.
Stop it Jerry. Stop.

Yea and until Layne walked on the scene, he was just another nobody. Layne made him and that band. So go fuck yourself.
