VIDEO OF NIRVANA’S REUNION PERFORMANCE FEATURING PAUL MCCARTNEY

By: 13 December 2012 67 Comments

Nirvana reunited last night to perform the new track “Cut Me Some Slack” with Paul McCartney at the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy Benefit Show in New York City. During the performance ‘#NirvanaReunion’ was put on the big screen, and Paul McCartney claimed he was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion. This was the first time Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear performed as Nirvana since 1994. Grohl, McCartney, Novoselic, and Smear will release “Cut Me Some Slack” as part of the soundtrack to Dave Grohl’s new Sound City film next year.

dave going hard. he belongs behind a kit. and mccartney killed it. like he wrote the perfect song to have nirvana style without being a direct cop and keeping his sound involved.

  • Shadows Collide with People said:

    That was pretty fucking awesome.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

They should do more shows and release an album. Call it whatever. Nirvana. The Surviving Members of Nirvana. Grohl, Novoselic, and Smear. There’s just an undeniable chemistry that is still there with those guys, even without Kurt. And just have guests/Dave sing, no permanent Kurt replacement ever.

    here it is

On a FUSE interview Dave says they wrote it in a day six months ago during the Sound City movie making.

  • Brett said:

That was awesome. In a fantasy world, they would all do an album together.

  • Ben said:

I think the whole Nirvana thing has sprouted out of a perfectly innocent and genuine collaboration. This is not Nirvana and was not intended to be a Nirvana reunion… simply it is a collaboration between the remaining (Nirvana) members and Paul McCartney.

I’m assuming this is a one-off for the soundtrack… however I would love to hear them release an album.

This is far better than Foo Fighters – Dave doing what Dave does best!

  • juDas WooDs said:

unreal…it’s like rock music was buried alive in 1994 and finaLLy came to life in 2012…maybe the END is near-

  • Christine said:

there are fuse interviews on youtube with dave and krist… get them while you are able before they get pulled. Dave said they wrote and record the song six months ago in one day. Chris Rock tells Krist that he (Krist) was really nice (to Chris) for their first SNL appearence and he apprecated it. very nice. sorry for spelling.

Anyone who ever Ever EVER thought McCartney didn’t/doesn’t “rock” just got pawned.

Oh, there is also a Sean Lennon FUSE interview which is quite cute. Get that too before youtube pulls it.

PS: It’s not a “nirvana” thing, that’s just what the media is calling it for lack of a better term. It’s a Jam Session between Paul McCartney and the members of Nirvana. Big Difference. Musicians with mutual respect for one another jam more often than we hear about (just ask Steve Jones, Dave Navarro, and Josh Homme). If you’re not in LA often you miss it; they go to clubs and play with whoever shows up (Billy Idol, Scott Weiland, anyone). There are/were set lists like crazy on Dave Navarro’s site ages ago (worth looking up, mixes of musicians doing cover tunes).

I think they should have booted Billy Joel, given Chris Martin more time, had Jay-Z appear instead of West (or even Kid Rock who I dislike but is ore entertaining to watch), and McCartney should have brought musicians out to close with ‘All you need is love’.

I’m ever going to fall asleep tonight after seeing that. If I die in my sleep I’ll be totally okay with it (the thought of outliving McCartney terrifies me anyway, I have to go first).

too too too too awesome. man.

  • Search and Destroy said:

Pretty good..hell McCartney is 70..can you imagine your grandpa getting up and rocking out like that?

  • Raj said:

@Brett can’t see it happening, Dave is pretty busy with Foo Fighters and when he isn’t doing Foo Fighters he’s doing Them Crooked Vultures or working with Queens of the Stone Age.

Dave has always said he would never play Nirvana songs, he’s only played Marigold because he sang, played guitar and wrote they lyrics. He’s always said those were Kurt songs, if he wanted Nirvana to continue he would have taken over the reigns in ’95.

  • Christine said:

It’s really that sliding blues box thing McCartney is playing that cranks it up into the sky. …. I can’t stop watching this (I still can’t believe it). It’s like the first time I saw U2 cover a Beatles song or Pearl Jam cover a Clash song, or Jane’s Addiction cover Who song – and all shred.

    This track shreds harder than ANYTHING I’ve heard in AGES. And McCartney and Grohl rock screaming together,…….. fricking P R I C E L E S S.

  • Christine said:

Yep, Macca turned 70 in June. God bless him.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

Christine, the people running the show put up ‘#NirvanaReunion’ on the screen.

  • ReverendMaynard said:

Hate that people are calling them “Nirvana”, but you can’t deny how badass that was

  • Nicky Martingell said:

Oh god I am mortified!!! I want words with you Grohl how could you put McCartney up front for you!!!!????? Im sorry I am dumbfounded anyone but him. :( This could have been great

  • YUMM said:

Who would of fucking thought that the big 4 would all comeback in someway. They all came back, fucking amazing!

  • Robert said:

That is awesome and they should make an album be call it something else of course.

  • Mike said:

that cigar box guitar rocks! these guys sounded great together!

  • Mooe said:

Thank god for livenirvana and twitter. You guys here are praising a performance I think is forgettable. Cool you like it I guess.

I really wanted to like it but it’s generic and unremarkable.
And to make it worse, they allowed McCartney rant about Nirvana.
    McCartney, the Beatle Kurt hated.

  • SuperSG said:

    @JudasWoods

I feel that Grunge ended when Soundgarden went on Hiatus in 1997. I agree that it IS coming back!

  • SuperSG said:

And Yes. The Big 4 are back to school the bitchy little rock/ nu metal world of Linkin Park, 3 days grace, and Nickelback!

  • Abe Froman said:

Christine, you are spot on in your claim that it’s the media (and this junior high site) calling it a Nirvana reunion. They performed as Dave Grohl & friends, not as Nirvana with Paul McCartney.

It’s pure laziness to call it a Nirvana reunion, plain & simple.

No Brett, it was not a Nirvana reunion, I don’t care what the “hashtag catchphrase” scrolling above the stage said. Until Grohl & company call it a Nirvana reunion, it’s only a collaboration between musicians.

BUT at the same time, this website is what it is. You allow that jackass magic mike to troll every comment board with unrelated posts about Taylor Momsen, and other headlines include crap like GWEN STEFANI JOINS BUSH ON STAGE TO PERFORM ‘GLYCERINE,’ KISSES HUSBAND GAVIN ROSSDALE and NEW PHOTOS OF GWEN STEFANI WEARING A NIRVANA T-SHIRT.

Then you wonder why this website isn’t taken more seriously.

    That was Brilliant, incredible actually!!

This song sounds a lot like The Beatles “Helter Skelter”

  • Electric Fun said:

    that was BRILLIANT

  • Is he one? said:

    Really awesome! :D

Not too cool with the “Nirvana” labelling but anyway… epic!

  • versus said:

This was surprisingly solid, complete with Grohl waving his hair while he played to make it look like he was playing harder than he actually was. Well done, lads!

  • Chris J. said:

This wasn’t a “Nirvana Reunion”, the only people who have billed it as that is the fucking media, and douche Sir Paul who didn’t even know who Nirvana was.

Get a clue. This was the surviving members of Nirvana playing with Paul to play a brand new song from the SOUND CITY MOVIE SOUNDTRACK – NOT NIRVANA!!! This is NOT a Nirvana song, they did NOT perform as Nirvana, and Krist, Dave, and Pat all say the same thing – “not a Nirvana reunion, just jamming with Paul to make a Sound City Movie Soundtrack collaboration”

  • Chris J. said:

Brett, this is why music is the pop trash it is today. This is what ruined grunge. Your too “lazy”? You give grunge a bad name running the site like this, and tarnish the definition of what “grunge” means/meant. I know you’ve grown up in this shitty reality based tv, TMZ sensationalistic headline reporting, OC fake ass people land. But dont you care about the impression on all the kids that come to this site “learning” about grunge for the first time and don’t know the difference between your complete bullshit and what this music is really about… You would think you would have gotten a healthy ear full of this from your dad – LAME DUDE.

  • Nick said:

Too much Kanye in a skirt last night, and not enough of this.

  • cosmicatomic said:

Foo Fighters is such a waste of time. Anything that takes away from Dave on the drums is a NEGATIVE from my perspective.

  • steiner1975 said:

    Chris J:

REALLY???? Why don’t you calm down dude. Little over the edge there. The performance was great….song was great….and Kurt wouldn’t have made it better(maybe more depressing….but surely not better). Paul said….yeah I might be 70 but I can rock like a 20 year old. Sounded better than the original Nirvana. OH!

  • Is he one? said:

Oh yeah @Chris J you should definitely calm down man. Mind your own business and let it be. Oh oh!

Seriously though why do you care, this site is fun and makes some people happy. Period.

  • JBR said:

In tons of interviews Kurt and Nirvana did, first and foremost,
they always said they were channeling the Beatles-
    Does anyone remember this????
For anyone to criticize Paul is insane!

  • Dennis said:

That was awesome. Krist bass line was prevalent throughout the whole song. Paul has still got it man.

I’m for a new “Nirvana and friends” type cd. Along the lines of Slash’s cds where he has a different singer every song.

  • The Dude said:

That was amazing. Kurt would have probably been very happy with this…

  • Pete said:

    Awesome.

  • me said:

i thought it was awesome and it was a nirvana reunion. it was nirvana and the beatles meeting in the middle. the melody and the madness. paul’s vocals were also amazing.

  • Joe Momma said:

What part of “Dave Grohl & Friends” is everyone missing?

They are not calling themselves Nirvana, nor are they playing Nirvana music. Don’t make it into something it’s clearly not.

  • Britney Spears said:

Its not a Nirvana reunion without Kurt Cobain. Brett, you are a fucking idiot for posting this.

  • Aaron said:

    Awesome! its Paulvana. Great song!

  • €inestein said:

It was loud and everything in the song sounded well placed and neat

  • Giane Barros de Lima said:

greeeaaat performance!!! i love this song.kurt i miss you so much

  • Mark said:

Whether it’s called “Nirvana” or “Paul and Dave and Friends,” we all can admit that this is what Nirvana would sound like if Kurt was in his 40s and they were still rocking out. This is a great song and I give a lot of credit to McCartney, I thought this would be terrible. He did an amazing job with that little cigar box and especially the vocal track, which I am very impressed with.

Appreciate the music. “Grunge” has always been about nixing labels, hasn’t it? Until Dave comes out and says, “Yeah, Nirvana is back,” everything else is just BS.

  • peace_frog said:

Anyone who says this is not a Nirvana reunion and busting Bretts balls for it is just hyper sensitive. When serviving members of any group get together it is a reunion. We all know their purpose was not to replicate Nirvana in any way. We know what their purpose was. But it was indeed surviving members of NIRVANA reuniting on stage.

    re·un·ion
    /r??yo?ony?n/Noun
1.An instance of two or more people coming together again after separation.

Try to remember you are on a grunge forum. Im pretty sure we all know kurt is dead.

  • peace_frog said:

Id like to hear more from this colaboration. Pauls vocals were pretty stong and he rocked that out. Dave doing his best Animal(muppet) impression. Great job!

  • Joe Momma said:

So Novoselic played on the last Foo album, why was that not billed as Nirvana reunited? Call it what it is. (DG, PS & KN all reportedly said it’s NOT a Nirvana reunion, how can you misinterpret that?)

The whole “Nirvana Reunion” thing is for the media and people who can’t move on with their lives. Nirvana is said & done, this is something different. They are not coming back folks, get over it.

& as far as busting Brett’s balls, he wanted suggestions for this site a while back, 1st step should be to stop being a fan & start being a reporter. I’ll give credit where it’s due, this site has potential, but 2/3 of the content on here is a joke and the writers’ (that’s writers plural as in most of them) grasp of the English language is mediocre at best.

  • steiner1975 said:

Last time I checked Dave,Krist, and Pat called it a Nirvana reunion on the big sign at the show (see pic above). Also last time I checked they are 2/3rd’s of the founding members of Nirvana. So……if they want to call it a reuinion then they have the right to and nobody here can say squat. Unless Kurt didn’t blow his brains out and is alive and writing on this forum……people need to respect the bands decision. I rather have Paul than Kurt anyday with those guys!!!

  • peace_frog said:

Well I certainly moved on with my life. I think people who go nuts if you call the remaining members of Nirvana coming together a “reunion”(which by all definitions thats exactly what it is) are people who cant move on. They need to nitpick that its not really Nirvana. Thanks for enlightening us. Meanwhile the grown ups who have moved on heard that McCartney was going to play a new song with the surviving members of Nirvana, took that at face value and understood this was not going to be a Nirvana concert.

If you want to say that they are not former members of Nirvana that got together(reunited) to play a new song with Paul McCartney, then you say it how ever you want. Neither way is wrong. Nobody is confused.

  • Is he one? said:

Another thing, damn it must be stressful for Krist to play bass in front of and with Paul, haha! Under pressure! :-D

  • Inmytree said:

Hard not to like Paul’s attitude, that was a lot of fun.

  • RAWR said:

    @steiner1975
    2/3 of the founding members?
    Have you heard of bleach?

  • steiner1975 said:

RAWR…..SOOOOO sorry. CHAD on drums. Who cares anyway????? The only grunge band that mattered in 1989 was Soundgarden!!!!!! Chris over Kurt ANYDAY!!!!!

  • Adam said:

Never been a fan of most of Paul’s work in the Beatles and especially his solo stuff. Am I the only one who thinks grohl has sucked since 2000? Poppy songwriting, cornball lyrics and pointless screaming?

  • me said:

great NIRVANA REUNION. kurt would be proud. just wanted to say again great NIRVANA REUNION. some people are retarded and don’t think it was a NIRVANA REUNION. but it was a NIRVANA REUNION. and the new NIRVANA/MCCARTNEY song is great. what a great……

    N I R V A N A R E U N I O N for all of us who wanted to see/hear a N I R V A N A R E U N I O N.

some people think they are music experts trying to knock down the fact that it was a NIRVANA REUNION and it said NIRVANA REUNION on the BIG screen and PAUL said it was a NIRVANA REUNION.

keep enjoying the NIRVANA REUNION and wait for the NEW SONG to come out.

  • Joe Momma said:

Hey guys, wasn’t the Nirvana reunion awesome? I mean, I know they aren’t calling themselves Nirvana, and I know they’re not playing any Nirvana music, and I know they aren’t really Nirvana, but my brain can’t comprehend Grohl & Novoselic playing together under any other name, so I’m going to call them Nirvana. Yay!

  • Kittypettin said:

First new Nirvana song in like 15 years and sounds great! It sounds like it could fit right in on Utero, maybe they could put it on the 10th anniversary release next year as bonus song?

This is a very good performance.

  • Animaan said:

Fuck man, that was killer!!!! I am not one to hope for reunions that aren’t worth happening at a certain point (Guns N’ Roses….), and I don’t think they should reunite under “Nirvana” or with Paul McCartney (although he did a great job on this song), but he’s older, and it’d be different kind of chemistry. but FUCK man, hearing Krist on bass, Dave on drums, and Pat on guitar – just brilliant. If only there was the missing link…

  • JBR said:

Just watched it a few times-
    I think its amazing!

  • Nanette said:

    Wow,

That was pretty amazing to watch. I my guess is that they appreciate rock music enough and respect each others contributions enough that they all thought performing with each other was amazing too.

I don’t care what they called it, ” a bunch of guys who used to be in other bands” “reunion” or what ever if your all fired up about it you probably did not notice how really awesome it was.

  • Shadows Collide with People said:

I agree with a lot of these posts. I thought Mccartney was going to shit the bed but he was pretty good. I was really impressed with the other three former members of Nirvana in relation to the instrumentals. The Foo Fighters fucking suck and they have always sucked. Dave Grohl however is a great musician and a fantastic drummer but this is a one-off experiment I am sure. I stick by my post second comment down on this news feed. Bravo!

  • The Whiny Hipster said:

I don’t know how I always get stuck reading all of these dumb comments some of you mindless morons post. I do find some of them quite amusing though…

I feel badly for Chris J in this situation however. He/she seems a little bit confused and maybe slightly misguided. Chris J, let me try and help you out by clearing some things up. You see, it’s actually people like Chris J that are everything that’s wrong with music today – not whatever it was that you mindlessly dribbled about. If I can get back those few seconds that it took to read that unintelligible slop… And then re-read, just to reassure myself that I didn’t drop a few IQ points and I was actually reading something that another human being wrote… I’d find thousands of better ways to spend those few painful seconds.

I don’t really know if I’ve felt more embarrassed for somebody else in my life.

Chris J, you’ve managed to post one of the least intelligent comments I’ve read on this site.

    Be proud.
