Soundgarden is going to win because of your target audience… most of these albums sucked, or were mediocre. Dinosaur jr had the best album in the alt rock category.

  • Ray said:

People should really check out “Acts” by RNDM. A truly solid effort.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

I voted for Oceania, for anybody wondering. My runner up is Blues Funeral, followed by King Animal.

  • uckmeNOuckyou said:

King Animal wins not even close some are totally unknown AND SOUND AMATEURISH COMPARED TO SOUNDGARDEN.

  • Cath said:

Walking Papers, by a country mile. I can’t believe how little coverage you guys are giving them on here…

  • Magic Mike Mazzarone said:

I voted for Oceania as well. King Animal to me would a distant second. I really think the new Garbage album though is completely underrated.

  • Louy Guoiul said:

Oceania just sounds all the same and the Blues funeral is so depressing and dated. King Animal wins easily only the deaf would choose other wise. No surprise the people who work here vote for the weak slow sad emo music.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

lol, Oceania/King Animal/Blues Funeral all have at least a depressing song or two on the album. Pinwheels, Violet Rays, Bones of Birds, A Thousand Days Before, Ode to Sad Disco, The Gravedigger’s Song (and many others). I’ll keep listening to weak slow sad emo music!

  • Joe said:

    Blues Funeral. By far.

  • Paul said:

Mark Lanegan’s Blues Funeral gets my vote. Lanegan is brilliant as always and experiments with new sounds.

  • danny said:

mostly mediocre records. The only discrete one is Blues Funeral.
    Top 5 of the year:
    - Swans
    - Japandroids
    - Grizzly Bear
    - Wild Nothing
    - Deftones

  • Fuzhi said:

I voted for Walking Papers. I havent really decided what is my fav. yet it could be either Walking Papers, Soundgarden or Mark Lanegan. I just figured Walking Papers needed my vote the most and they released a really outstanding album.

  • grungeisdead said:

    WTF!!! NO MESHUGGAH???

  • Ben said:

Soundgarden & Jeff Solo for me. Jeff Aments solo record is very solid… I have that album on repeat often.

  • Matt said:

Mark Lanegan – Blues Funeral, with Walking Papers as runner up.

  • Stolzzie said:

    For me it’s Blues Funeral!

Btw, why is there a picture of John Frusciante’s latest album while it isn’t part of the poll?

  • Kirill said:

    Soundgarden->Smashing Pumpkins->Melvins

  • Christine said:

I haven’t heard all the LPs on the list but Dinosaur Jr. gets my vote.

  • Nicolas said:

Toadies by far. Play Rock Music is awesome. Acts by RNDM is another underrated one on the list as well. KA is good but doesn’t deserve to win, but I knew it would.

  • Is he one? said:

OCEANIA all the way! With King Animal second. I think Deftones should be third.

  • Joe said:

Very tough to choose between Oceania and King Animal… LOVE both of them so much… but I picked Oceania mainly because I think the Pumpkins deserve more credit than they’ve gotten for this album. Its truly an incredible record that gets better with each listen.

  • Joe said:

RNDM’s Acts album is excellent as well though… got it on the turntable at home quite often. Its quickly becoming a very special album to me. I have to check out Mark Lanegan’s new one, haven’t heard it yet!

  • Is he one? said:

Sadly with the audience on this site, even the “worst” Soundgarden album would have won the poll against even Mellon Collie or Siamese Dream. A second place for “Oceania” would be very significative IMO.

I just don’t see how SP could beat SG, AIC or PJ for instance on a site called “Grungereport”.

SP’s never found a proper label for them. I guess that’s part of why I love them so much.

Definitely not saying King Animal doesn’t deserve credit though, I’ve been rocking to “By crooked steps” all weekend long. :D

  • versus said:

Polls on this site are always funny to me. Regardless of the topic, it turns into a “What is your favorite band?” poll.

  • SIN said:

I’m pleasantly surprised at how diverse the comments have been so far :) For me I am going with SG just because I’ve been anticipating it for so long, though it does have a few holes in it. Mark Lanegan’s album was really good. I haven’t heard the new Melvin’s album all the way through yet, but it sounded alright. I actually liked the Bulls & Bees EP a lot. Dinosaur Jr. was a pretty good effort, very happy with it.

  • cosmicatomic said:

King Animal or Blues Funeral. I loved Oceania but I don’t think it was better than KA or BF. BF is the only album I’d vote for ahead of KA.

Still, a lot of great albums this year. Hopefully that continues on through next year.

  • dWill said:

I can’t honestly say I’ve heard every album on this list, but the ones I’ve heard are all at least average. My favorites are probably Local H and Garbage, but the best album I heard this year was Oceania by a long shot. Great record, and even better live.

  • bigbad said:

Walking Papers by miles. That thing just kicks from start to finish.

  • SuperSG said:

    1) King Animal
    2) I bet on Sky
    3) Blues Funeral
    4)Oceania
    5)Deftones

It was a DAMN good year for music! Soundgarden seems content enough with each other to think about making a new record, SP is still going strong, Dino JR is still kickass, THE BIG 4 ARE BACK!!! TO SAVE ROCK MUSIC!!! WITH PAUL MACCARTNEY!!!! :)

  • Dave Trohl said:

I have to go with Soundgarden, out of spite.

  • Bruno Sílvio said:

Brett, you should do a “best cover” too.
“Walking Papers” is my favorite cover for an album.
“Blues Funeral” is my second favorite.

As for the actual music, I’m really divided between “King Animal” and “Blues Funeral”.
    They’re both fenomenal.

  • Mia said:

I’m voting for Blues Funeral because it’s a brilliant album that I’m still listening too, and have been listening to since February. I got the chance to see him perform the songs live twice the year and it was excellent both times. I also really liked King Animal which some haven’t been as enthused about but Mark Lanegan is really stiff competition for me as everything he does is amazing and I’m sure Soundgarden are going to get plenty of votes otherwise.

  • Andrei said:

Smashing Pumpkins for me, with Blues Funeral as a second close.

At least I know I’ll still be listening to these two in 5 years.

  • Old MR said:

    DEFTONES!!!!

  • Dennis said:

Wish I could have wrote in a couple. Detones – Koi and Stone Sour – HOGAB were the best albums of 2012.

King Animal get the vote here I guess.

  • Pete said:

    Easily King Animal.

  • Eu said:

Why Dead Sara can be grunge option?

  • Brad said:

none of these albums were very good.
My album of the year is Tame Impala’s Lonerism. it’s almost perfect.

  • The Incredible Mr. Mark Arm said:

    Oceania

  • MindRiot132 said:

Lanegan’s Blues Funeral, without question. Although King Animal was a lot better than I was expecting having heard Been Away Too Long and Live to Rise. But no one tops the almighty Lanegan right now. If SG does another new album, they need more A Thousand Days Before and Taree’s and less Halfway There and Rowing’s….

  • MindRiot132 said:

I’m with Mia! Exactly how I feel

  • yourmomspenis said:

    no, fuck that!
    1)Lanegan
2)Creature with the atom brain (fuckin noobs, u still don’t know who they are? omg…)
    3)SG

  • yourmomspenis said:

By the way Lanegan has 5 songs or more with Creature with the atom brain, check them out. And they toured with him and performed with him. If you don’t know who they are(and also other belgian band – Millionaire) you’re total noobz.

  • Britney Spears said:

Oceania. Yeah I said it, I love Soundgarden and Cornell is the man, but their new album was weak sauce. Face it, no matter how many times you listen to King Animal, its not as good as Superunknown or Badmotorfinger. Hate on Bill Corgan all you want guys, people who hate a band’s music just because of a lead singer’s ego are stupid.

  • Alternadude said:

Oh oh oh Oceania! No doubt in mah mind.

  • 10 said:

I made a playlist of all the above albums that I own and listened to it all day while I worked. Tracks from Blues Funeral, Oceania, and Walking Papers probably stood out the most. In my opinion, Oceania is an easy choice for the year’s best. All the other albums (KA, Not Your Kind of People, etc) are good, but not great.

  • Matt said:

YMP is right, Creature with the Atom Brain are really good, I’ve really got into them recently :)

  • BonerJam said:

Why is there no voting slot for John Frusciante? His album blew all these away

  • Markus said:

Tough question, there are so many good albums…

  • hip (eponymous) poor boy said:

I voted King Animal. My favorite of the year is Jack White Blunderbuss. It’s one of those albums that you expect to be great. And it’s no where near what u expected. But is better then u could have imagined.

  • HermitsUnited said:

I think King Animal is the best, but I Bey On Sky in close second

  • Kev said:

Koi No Yokan – Deftones. Even if its missing from the list.

  • Shadows Collide with People said:

King Animal with Blues Funeral being a very very close second. Frusciante’s PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone is a solid third. Anything that Frusciante touches turns to gold.

  • Deviate said:

    King Mofo’n Animal

  • Deviate said:

I admit I have yet to check out some of these other albums though. I have some listening to do.

  • SuperSG said:

Soundgardens album was most important. I even saw RAP channels like BET or FUSE or MTV or Soul saying “The Mighty Return of Grunge Legends Soundgarden”.
That HAS to show u how big this album is!

  • SuperSG said:

Euphoria Morning is better than King Animal.

  • Wes Jett said:

Soundgarden and Local H … Both great albums

  • Jorg said:

Jack Irons is seriously one of the most talented and astute drummers of all time. So if I had two votes, Blues Funeral would be my second choice, and I know every, and I mean every screeming trees, mark lanegan, and W/ Is. Campell record by heart.

But if we’re talking about ROCK, Scott Lucas and Brian St.Clair continue to bring it album after album. In the last 3 months (to the day) since “Hallelujah! I’m a Bum,” came out, I’ve listened to it over 100 times. I think it’s their best album to date. They understand ROCK in such a pure and visceral form. It does cause you to perceive the world differently. I’m 31. I’ve played drums in ROCK bands since I was 14. I’d been trying to figure out what my lingering frustration with the world around me was still, and why it was still there after my twenties. I don’t wanna see the world burn no more either.

  • Bent said:

Oceania. I wanted to like King Animal so much more than I did. Loved a good amount of songs on Oceania, especially after a few playthroughs.

  • SuperSG said:

I counted that Ive listened to King Animal 1,OO7 times by adding up all listens to each song.

  • Pingfah said:

I thought that Oceania, King Animal and Oceania were all amazing, loved all 3.

Haven’t heard the rest, although Jeff Ament’s album is enroute to me from the USA right now. Would love to get the VALIS album too as their other stuff is great, but can’t find it on CD.

  • Jake_K said:

My vote is for Local H!

  • Cool As Ice Cream said:
