ALICE IN CHAINS’ NEW SONG “HOLLOW” IS NOT A RADIO SINGLE

By: 20 December 2012 53 Comments

The Baldy, who works with Alice In Chains, posted this on the band’s official message board:

Just to clarify a (relatively unimportant) misconception out there; Hollow is not a single.
It isn’t being pushed or promoted by the label, and it’s not being delivered to radio.
Much like A Looking In View from the last album, Hollow is basically a teaser track that the band has decided to uncork in anticipation of the upcoming album.  Or, as Sean calls it, “A Christmas present for the fans.”

So with that being said, go back to analyzing it, critiquing it, and hopefully enjoying it, and let it whet your appetite for what’s to come in a few months…

I wasn’t blown away by the song upon first listen but after a few more it’s grown on me a bit..

    The pros:
    -The main riff is killer
    -Great solo from Jerry
-It stays true to the AIC sound

    The cons:
-Williams vocals are too low… Again
-It sound like a left over from BGWTB
    -The chorus lacks punch

Overall I don’t think it’s as good as the first leak we got from BGWTB (A Looking in view) but it’s still alright, I’m hoping for better songs when the album comes out though.

    You are mistaken.

The best Christmas present would be Taylor Momsen wrapped in nothing but a bow.

  • Magic Mike Mazzarone said:

I mean just listen to the fantastic vocal melodies of Momsen in “Kill Me”.

Ok yeah it’s really not funny anymore and you’re taking the fun out of visiting the site @Magic Mike Mazzarone. You think you’re funny, and after one or two times you almost were, but now it’s become more troubling and disturbing than anything.

With all due respect, could you please stop? We did not sign for that.

Holy fuck your mom jokes. I must have time traveled back to 2003.

  • Magic Mike Mazzarone said:

I need a few pairs of tube socks. I used the ones I had thinking about the queen known as Taylor Momsen

  • Magic Mike Mazzarone said:

2003 was a great year. Your New Jersey Devils won their 3rd Stanley Cup and the world was introduced to the original beauty queen: Mischa Barton.

    Ok so you’re going on…
    Sad, really.

  • Magic Mike Mazzarone said:

    You know what was sad?

The final episode of Gossip Girl. It was without Taylor Momsen =(

  • Billy Corgan said:

Good. It would be a terrible choice for the first single. I want this album to go platinum.

  • SUICYCO said:

This Magic Mike guy is a moron with no shame. To think that Brett referred to this scrub one time as a “reporter” and he’s here writing middle school comments, cheapens this site. Dude, Magic Mike, you’re a complete idiot. Not everybody that reads this site is 12. You’re obviously some fat dork who has never had a woman in his life. Get lost and get a life.

That’s it. Let the butt hurt flow and flow.

Just like the ass of Taylor Momsen will hurt after I ram my thick, hard pole into her tight caboose.

OMG. GUYS! Stop it! Listen to this song stoned and then tell be that it is bad… It’s fucking great!

  • Craigory52 said:

That kind of sucks…”Hollow” is a good track. And I actually heard “A Looking In View” on the radio quite a bit when it was first released I thought it was the first single. Well, maybe we will hear “Hollow” on the radio eventually. We will have to see what is in store for their first official radio single then.

  • Dolan said:

But the master is terribad. Can’t make out the vocals from the guitars due to the insanely bad recording and mastering :( ((

  • Jesse said:

First off “caged tiger”…Who in the hell asked you to analyze the song?” it’s either you like the song or ya don’t . Nobody cares about anything you just wrote.

  • GwynnKatie said:

Thanks Baldy for the news. See you on tour with that camera.
Thanks for the Christmas present guys – not many bands do such kind & generous things for their fans.

  • Raj said:

That makes sense, usually the single is released 6-8 weeks before the album is dropped. I recently read the album isn’t dropping until spring which would mean now is way too early for a single. They did this with BGWTB, before ‘Check My Brain’ was released as a single, ‘A Looking in View’ came out first on the website.

  • Scott McLean said:

which explains why i haven’t heard it on the radio. i’m listening to 100.3 FM The X “rocks” and I’ll add, but not enough AIC.

  • Scott McLean said:

however, i still consider like a single on YouTube since it’s very popular there. is it better than a few other songs, including “Tempest” by Deftones. I’m really not sure but that’s a great song.

  • Scott McLean said:

i will consider “Hollow” like a single even if it’s not a single.

  • Scott McLean said:

i guess it’s a fan vid but thank God for fans of Alice In Chains.

  • Scott McLean said:

A Looking In View was called a single by the local DJ and it was played in full, entire length of that great song, and Alice In Chains showed they are one of the best bands by not being afraid of what listeners would think having to listen for the 7 plus minutes, when most people don’t have that attention span except Alice In Chains fans and prog rock fans, and some metal fans. I can’t believe the song doesn’t have 3 billion views, okay i meant 3 million but you get the point.

  • Scott McLean said:

Listen to “Karneval” by Faust on YouTube and it’s instrumental that sounds like Alice In Chains, Kurt (in heaven playing guitar) and the Beatles all at the same time.

  • uckmeNOuckyou said:

    Song sounds Hollow

  • CagedTiger said:

    @Jesse

What do you think the comments section is for you dumbass… At least I’m discussing the song and staying on topic unlike some people who would rather discuss Taylor momsons pussy.

  • Philip said:

Look, to these criticisms of ‘Hollow’ that are mounting by a certain element of the listeners (here), I say there is another way to look at it, or more relevant, hear it.

There is dissonant quality to the loud parts of the song, before the verse(s) come in. There is a deliberate, hypnotic quality to that which is a mark of Alice In Chains. It’s not an accident, and it’s not “bad production”. Secondly William’s vocals. They are not too low in the mix. It is that William’s vocal quality is much more like Jerry’s than Layne’s was. DuVall has a cleaner tone like Cantrell does. He doesn’t have that rasp in his voice that made Staley’s vocals more distinct to Jerry’s, and thus why they stood out more in a Layne/ Jerry harmony. William is an excellent vocalist and can hit the high notes. But the quality to it melds less ‘distinctly’ than Jerry’s when the two harmonize. That’s how I hear it. It’s not a bad thing at all, to me. I think this new Alice In Chains is doing exceptionally well and I’m stoked to have them back…

I don’t get why bands even release physical promotional radio CD singles anymore. Its all digital/online now. This is like issuing an 8-track when CD’s were popular in the 90′s.
