KIM THAYIL SAYS SOUNDGARDEN COULD RELEASE COVERS ALBUM & MULTIPLE B-SIDE ALBUMS

By: 22 December 2012 13 Comments

In a new interview with Hails and Horns, Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil discussed possible Soundgarden B-side releases, “We never put out the B-sides because we went from Telephantasm to Live on I-5 then we started recording the new album. So the B-sides compilation has been put on hold. We want it to be a standalone album of Soundgarden originals that were not compiled in an album format. It might be two or three albums. There’s one that would be originals that were only available on compilation records for other labels or movie soundtracks, or B-sides in Australia and Europe. We also want to do an album of some covers that we’ve recorded. Then I want to do an album of some instrumental stuff and some dub mixes.”

Thayil also discussed Soundgarden’s future, “Just like I explained when people asked why we broke up, “Not much is written in stone.” I used to ask, “What’s the longest you ever had a girlfriend or boyfriend?” or ‘What’s the longest you’ve ever had a job?’ Soundgarden was together for 13 years. At that point I’d never been with a girl that long, or had any other job that long. But yes, for the foreseeable future. It’s always going if it’s going.”

They have got to release a studio version of the song Christi. It is a crime it has not made it onto an album

Agreed. Christi is an awesome song

If I could get a studio version of their cover of Drop Out Boogie, I’d shit my self.
Oh yeah and Waiting for The Sun! or I Want You(She’s So Heavy), Communication Breakdown please? Spinal Taps Big Bottom?!

I have most of the singles, but would still love to see this. “Girl U Want” was a great B-side AND a great cover.

Christi exists in demo form according to them. Why wasn’t it ever finished? Come to think of it some of Black Rain sounds like unused instrumental parts of Christi which is perhaps where it went. I would like the hear the original 18 or whatever they called them like Open Up and Ocean Fronts.

The rest of the crap is all over Youtube in one form or another.

    My wanted covers:
    -When the Levee Breaks
    -White Room
    - ANYTHING Led Zeppelin.
    - Another one bites the Dust.
    - I wanna hear what Show me how to Live and Gasoline would sound if Soundgarden did them.
    -Perfect Strangers

Speaking of covers why don’t they ever play any more live? Last one was Waiting for the Sun done lamely. This is once a band who wore their influences on their sleeve proudly until 1997 that is.
