GRUNGEREPORT.NET 2012 AWARDS VOTING: BAND OF THE YEAR

Band of the Year

pollcode.com free polls

Bands that didn’t release new material or tour weren’t nominated like Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Faith No More, the Pixies, Rage Against The Machine, and Nine Inch Nails. I also didn’t nominate side project bands since those could split the vote among Pearl Jam fans, and other groups with side projects.

Faith No More did an European Tour, Brett!

  • NickG said:

Soundgarden was the most significant by far.

  • Butthead said:

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS BY FAR. ANYONE WHO DISAGREES IS JUST BLIND AND WON’T ADMIT THAT KING ANIMAL COULDN’T BE AS GOOD AS SUPERUNKNOWN OR BADMOTORFINGER IF IT TRIED. HOW MUCH MORE CREATIVITY CAN A BAND DO WHEN THEIR FRONTMAN BASICALLY RUINED HIS OTHER RECENT BAND?? AUDIOSLAVE WAS JUST STARTING TO GROW ON ME AND LOTS OF OTHER FANS UNTIL CHRIS CORNELL JUMPED SHIP AND DECIDED TO EXPERIMENT WITH RAP , TECHNO AND POP. HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN.

  • NickG said:

I agree it wasn’t as good as Superunknown, DOTU, etc., I just said they were the most significant. SP had a very good album come out and had it been 2007 when they first “reunited” with a new album, I would’ve voted for them.

Settle down Brett….. I mean Butthead (he he)

Why does the Mak Lanegan Band not make the cut? Blues Funeral is probably the best new album since QOTSA’s Era Vulgaris. He also toured for the album, hanging out & meeting the fans afterward whether or not you bought any merchandise. Artist if the year in my opinion.

    “of” the year … Whoops

  • RickDeckard said:

… The two people who voted for Bush {pun?} aughtaa reevaluate their taste-buds…

  • Scott McLean said:

I can’t think of what they’ve all done this year, but I know Soundgarden and Garbage have 2012 albums. Foo Fighters worked hard touring. I choose 5R6 and they are more like Tool which is not to say that I like Tool’s sound better than 90′s Grunge sound which I definitely like better to listen to. I try to remain objective though. Hmmm… on that list Foo Figthers but 5R6 not on that list. Also Stoned Jesus, Spacegoat, etc. are stoner rock/stoner metal and have a similar effect of grunge, though not that same of course.

  • Scott McLean said:

I voted after I made the comment, and I see who is winning. Oh well, I don’t always pick the winner.

  • Scott McLean said:

Oh that’s right Smashing Pumpkins also have album but maybe Billy talked more than he showed his musical greatness, but he does that too.

  • Raj said:

Definitely, the return of Soundgarden was the most anticipated. I hate comparisons, King Animal was never going to sound like Superunknown or BadMotorFinger or any other Soundgarden release. Just like BGWTB doesn’t sound like any other AIC album.

There are really good songs on there, it’s been a long time since they recorded an album, which is why if people were expecting Black Rain part 2 they were surely mistaken.

Chris sounds great but there are lot of remnants of Audioslave/Live to Rise vibe to it. In some songs it sounds like his voice was shot and then they recorded him.

  • Pete said:

Soundgarden easily runs away with this.

  • SEATTLESOUND said:

    what about the offspring

  • Cath said:

    Walking Papers.

  • Christine said:

I think Bush and Stone Temple Pilots deserve a lot more credit this year than they’ve gotten.

I still have to go with Jane’s.

  • Magic Mike Mazzarone said:

    James Iha. Clearly.

  • Jason said:

This list is supposed to be based on bands that released new material. PJ, FF’s, and Mudhoney didn’t as far as I know (I don’t count PJ20). Soundgarden IMO hasn’t done anything good since Superunknown. I still love AIC but it will never be the same without Layne. I haven’t heard the new Toadies or Melvin’s yet. I don’t really care or know that much about the other bands. Local H get’s my vote.

  • Jake K said:

Rolling with Local H on this one. Also don’t forget about the Toadies either. They put out a solid new album.

  • NevertheMachine said:

    Reality, Soundgarden swept this year

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

Mudhoney did touring and a film. They also played a bit of new material on tour.

Faith No More’s touring was too limited for me to nominate them. AIC wouldn’t have been nominated if they hadn’t released a new song last week.

  • Shadows Collide with People said:

    Soundgarden hands down.

  • Elle said:

Ok this is a no-brainer the award goes to Soundgarden

  • SuperSG said:

    Soundgarden was most Important

  • Ike said:

How did PJ get any votes? Have you not paid any attention to this past year, or could you just not understand the question being asked here? Stop being a moron.

  • NickG said:

Magic Mike, I will one up you and vote Zwan.

  • Butthead said:

TEN YEARS FROM NOW, WHICH ALBUMS WILL BE REMEMBERED??? KING ANIMAL OR SUPERUNKNOWN. I THINK WE ALL KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT ONE, FOLKS. SONGS LIKE BLACK HOLE SUN AND OUTSHINED WILL STILL BE PLAYED ON RADIO STATIONS TEN YEARS FROM NOW. NO ONE IS GOING TO REMEMBER A THOUSAND DAYS BEFORE OR ROWING IN TEN YEARS BECAUSE IT IS NOT TIMELESS OR CLASSIC.

  • Nicolas said:

King Animal and Play Rock Music were the only two new albums I was interested in this year and Play Rock Music is much better, not to mention I saw the Toadies 3 times this year and they all rocked, so Toadies definitely get my vote. Next year is shaping up to be a much better year for new music.

  • Yourmom said:

where da fuck is mark lanegan’s band?

  • Pete said:

Am I the only one here who remembers Superunknown getting shit on by critics and fans when it was released because it was too different from BMF and too pop-music-y?

  • Dreux said:

Butthead, King Animal came out about a month ago. It has one single. Your argument about the timeless nature of the album, in comparison to Superunknown, wouldn’t even be strong if you knew what the fuck you were talking about. There’s a difference between a timeless piece of music and a socially relevant radio hit.

  • Douche Teabag said:

Brett’s dad here. Seeing as how I know more about rock than all of you combined (settle down I’m only kidding) I would have to say it’s a tossup between the Pumpkins and Soundgarden. They both put out work that is palatable if not predictable. There was nothing ground breaking about either album. Neither band ventured off in some new direction that set the rock world on fire or garnered massive critical or commercial praise. But I did like both albums and I hope they keep exploring their obvious genius until Brett is spoon feeding me in my wheelchair.

On another note I did start listening to The Gaslight Anthem recently. I can honestly say that I am kicking myself in the ass for not getting into these guys earlier. The best way to describe them is Green Day meets Social Distortion meets Springsteen meets Tom Petty. They’re songwriting is genius. Every song is either good or great. As a matter of fact I don’t think these guys are capable of writing a bad song. Give them a listen. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year!

fuck this gay soundgarden cash reunion, LANEGAN 4tW!

  • thefreewheelinmarkarm said:

Had to give it to the Melvins. They put out a great record, toured 51 days straight, through 51 different states n DC plus they’ve been keeping it real since 1983. And they still fucking rock.

  • thefreewheelinmarkarm said:

Melvins, AIC, Soundgarden in that order for top 3

No idea why AIC got up there, but they did. Sorry SG. Listened to the new album for a week when it first came out and haven’t touched it or thought about it since. Reason why?

  • )))((( said:

Soundgarden are not a patch on Melvins. Mind you they do have the ‘Spoonman’ song right Schnab?

  • Scott McLean said:

    Congratulations to Soundgarden!

  • Scott McLean said:

I chose Foo Fighters but Soundgarden got many more votes and that’s great too. I think Dave Grohl is one of the nicest guys but Soundgarden seem quite nice besides being great musicians too. Congratulations on the win here!
