BILLY CORGAN SAYS NEXT SMASHING PUMPKINS ALBUM NEEDS TO BE “FAR STRONGER THAN OCEANIA”

By: 26 December 2012 19 Comments

Billy Corgan stated in a new interview with Crestfallen.com that the next album needs to be “far strong than Oceania, that takes time.” He added that it needs to be an “album that shows real growth from Oceania.” He compared it to the jump from Gish to Siamese Dream, and from Siamese Dream to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. While he is proud of Oceania, BillCo said making something just as good as Oceania isn’t enough. He said he’d be shocked if the album was out in 2013.

Corgan also discussed the possibility of releasing a ‘reissue’ type version of Oceania on vinyl in 2013 with the ‘Abbey Road’ soundboard mix, along with some bonus tracks, to coincide with a possible European tour. He said that the odds of this happening though are less than 20%, and that a European tour happening is a coin flip.

well duh. I didn’t really care for Oceania at all.

    We could only hope.

He’s only saying that because he cannot recreate or better Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

I believe once a band peaks, you can never re-peak. You can sell a lot of copies of a newer album like when Offspring sold 15 million copies of Americana but even that album could not touch songs like Self Esteem or Come Out and Play.

Nirvana could never recreate or better Nevermind, PJ still cannot better Ten, AIC won’t be able to better Dirt, etc.

Ditto^ What Andy said No fu@#$ng Duh!!

Oceania was a pretty good album overall. For the album to be stronger than Oceania it’s time to bring back at least a few heavy hitters reminiscent Mellon Collie/Siamese Dream era. That’s just my opinion. XYU, Ode To No One, Bullet, Geek USA…must I go on?

Congratulations Raj, you understand the definition of the word “peak”. Groundbreaking.

@Pete, thank you for the sarcasm. Why not adding something constructive, rather than trying to criticize someone else?

DUH Billy knows the ocean album sucks and will never be big again. The dud who said Nirvana will never top never mind DUH the main guy blew his head off hard to top that.

There is no challenge on that. Even White Stripes could compose a far better album than Oceania.

Oceania was a bit dull for my liking. It has no stand out tracks at all. It’s fine as background music but there are no tracks on it that really excite like the Pumpkins of old. Hell, not even like the Pumpkins of Zeitgeist….

I imagine i’m likely in the minority, but i think that Zeitgeist is a much better effort than Oceania. I’d happily hear more of that style, as opposed to the laid back psychedelic snooze fest that was Oceania.

OCEANIA is a fine album, one that Billy should be proud of.

Billy will disappear soon and do wrestling in a dirty diaper and sit on men’s faces.
It will be done while Oceania is playing in the background. The move will be called the shit sit.

@BillCo Fu Up, you’re the dud of course I know Cobain isn’t alive. I was talking about when they created In Utero.

  • Alternadude said:

Oceania is the best rock album in a decade. So was Siamese Dream at the time.

  • paulonious said:

what are the abbey road mixes?

  • Ike said:

Considering Oceania is one of his 2 or 3 best albums, it’s pretty unlikely he’ll top it.

  • Justin said:

Oceania was definitely not there best work. That’s coming from a HUGE fan

  • Alternadude said:

It’s some of their best work yeah. Violet rays, pinwheels, one diamond one heart, panopticon, inkless, all huge sp songs.
