Good song! The Binaural era had some really good b-sides that I think were better than many of the songs that actually made the album.

Binaural I can objectively say is the only PJ Album I really think is NOT GOOD… but as you said CRAIGORY52 seems like the b sides are better than the tunes that made the album.

IN general tho love the fan club singles and the VINYL… It just goes back to PJ being so intune with their fans and just being the greatest band in the world to be a fan of.

Was just tweeting about Binaural. Solid album, I think fans overlook it because it lacks the standout hits that other albums have. It takes a few listens to get into. But Sleight of Hand, Nothing As It Seems, Light Years, Insignificance, Light Years, Rival, Gods’ Dice, and Thin Air (among others) as as great as anything they’ve done. It’s nice to have the variety in Pearl Jam’s discography, if you’re burned out on the more standard rock of Ten/Vs./Vitalogy/Yield you can go listen to No Code or Binaural.

The one PJ album that doesn’t connect with me as much as the others is self-titled/Avocado. It might be because many of the songs are more politically charged rather than personal. Not that I disagree that the Iraq war was bullshit, but to me Eddie is at his best when his lyrics dig deep into himself.

Agree totally about Binaural. Absolutely love Pearl Jam, but i have never been able to get into that album. It really is sub par. Can’t believe they thought crap like Gods Dice, Sleight Of Hand, Breakerfall and worst of all, Evacuation, were worthy of being album tracks. The stuff on lost dogs (like Sad) that didn’t make the album is infinitely better than anything that’s actually on it.

Even the good songs are only OK. There are no great songs on that album at all.

For me, Binaural marks the beginning of the end of Eddie’s voice. Don’t get me wrong, still think the guy is awesome, but he is a pale shadow of his former self.

@ Brett – Guess there is no accounting for taste:) For me, after Binaural and Riot Act i thought that Avacado was a real return to form. Love that album. Come Back is amazing.

Agree that Binaural was the weakest effort from PJ.

    1) Vs. <— the best PJ album, period!
    2) Vitology <— weird, too many repetitive cords and loud, i love it
    3) Ten <— cant hardly argue that it belongs in top 3
    4) Backspacer <– short and sweet and doesnt drag
    5) Yield <— disent output and was better than no code
    6) No Code <— I think its a record that Kurt Cobain wouldve liked
    7) Pearl Jam <– honestly, this band shouldnt be that much political but its better album than the previous two efforts
    8) Riot Act <– love it over Binaural cas Love Boat Captain song is on it
    9) Binaural <— i think its very monotonous and depressive, maybe due to lack of competitions from other grunge bands and Creed taking over at that time)))))

i agree with Brett, Binaural is the best album of the 00s from Pearl Jam, the weakest is the avocado

Binaural will always be my least fave PJ disc. Riot Act is imo their best album since Yield. Avacado and Backspacer have some awesome songs, but seem to tread water. They need to use Cameron more,he was a kid in a candy store on King Animal but has been underutilized with PJ.
What happened to Mccreadys face melting solos as well?

Avocado is just so much better than Binaural.

binaural is my personal favorite PJ album so i always find it odd that most feel it is the bands worst. i think the whole tour and 72-show bootleg release helped the album to really grow on me. musically and lyrically it is incredible as you get a variety of personal statements from vedder clearly stemming from his long and drawn out divorce and obvious political views amongst other things. and the addition of cameron on drums cannot be overstated. the b-sides are also great, “Sad” is definitely album worthy but i don’t see it fitting well with the others. just my two cents…..

If I had to rank my favorite grunge bands in order, it would be:

    1 The Smashing Pumpkins
    2. Pearl Jam
    3. Alice In Chains/Soundgarden
    4. Nirvana

Nice! Thank you for the link (especially because there are videos of it live out there also.)

    If we’re making lists:

    PJ:
    1) Vitology
    1) Yield
    2) No Code
    3) Vs. )live(
    3) Ten )live(
    4) Riot Act
    5) Binaural )live(

Paul McCartney Alpha/Omega of all the world
Iggy Pop (godfather of punk), ask Henry Rollins
Yoko Ono (godmother of punk), ask the B-52s
    Mudhoney (godfathers of grunge)
Sonic Youth (saviors of college radio)
Mike Ness, Mike Watt, Mark Lanagen, Dave Grohl – collaboration kings
Jack White (james brown’s soul reincarnate without the baggage)
    U2 1979-1993 RIP
Jane’s Addiction 1988 – to infinity and beyond
QofSA (everything is golden, luv love LUV)

I will be converting my ‘gish’ tattoo to a QofSA tat, somehow (hopefully soon).

Sorry, isn’t it Vitalogy? * :) that’s what I get for cutting and pasting.

Binaural just had terrible production and just a lot of crap songs like Evacuation, God’s Dice, Nothing As It Seems, etc… And I agree with Corndog. Songs like In The Moonlight, Sad, Fatal, and Education being included on Binaural with some of those boring, awful songs I mentioned would have made a better record. It’s the only album I don’t like. Over the years No Code has grown on me immensely. When it came out after the fantastic Vitalogy I was disappointed but learned to really like it through the years. That won’t happen with Binaural unfortunately.

    1. Vitalogy 2. Vs 3. Yield 4. Ten 5. Pearl Jam 6. Backspacer 7. Riot Act 8. No Code…………………1000. Binaural

  • Craigory52 said:

I meant to say if songs like In The Moonlight, etc..replaced the boring awful songs from Binaural it would be a better record. Sorry I wish I can proof before I post.

    This is just the B-Side….

Here is the A-Side – All Night (featuring Glen Hansard, Liam Finn and Joseph Arthur)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_NGYkUOhpo

I think I prefer In The Moonlight… but both are great songs… as are most of Pearl Jam’s Lost Dogs, B-sides and rarities!

I hope they release a Lost Dogs 2!!! I’m sure there is plenty more unreleased gems in hiding!

Tragic. Fucking tragic…. Pearl Jam should have stopped after Vs.

  • FanGirl said:

Binaural was a real departure for PJ, and blatantly dark. Perhaps even the band had reservations about releasing it, then some regrets afterward, who knows? I had to give this album years of listening time to “get it”. Technically, not the absolute best that I’ve ever heard, but if they were all in their own heads while recording, the disjointed effort makes sense. This record could have suffered due to EV’s writers block and/or McCready’s addiction. I’d say that’s enough to stunt an album in process, but they pulled it off. They are NEVER going to do another “Ten” or “Yield” or “VS” – nor would I want them to. That wouldn’t be growth, it would be pandering. Give me a REAL band like PJ that deals honestly with their music any day. I’m really looking forward to the new stuff currently being worked on. Hoping for a release in late 2013!
