HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM GRUNGEREPORT.NET, PREVIEW OF 2013

By: 1 January 2013 29 Comments

Everybody’s least favorite webmaster/TMZReport owner, according to the comments section…

Happy New Years from GrungeReport.net! Hope everybody had an exciting New Years, was a boring one as usual in The O.C. We don’t get to see Carson Daly’s balls drop here. Anyways, we’re aiming at changing the name of GrungeReport.net by March 1st, maybe even before that. I think everyone will be satisfied with the new name and it will better represent what the site is about now. We’ll be launching donations soon to help pay for the expansion of the site, with some rewards to readers who donate. 2013 should be an exciting year for the site. With our growing traffic and upcoming name change I expect more interviews on the site this year. Late last year we had interviews with Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament, The Smashing Pumpkins’ Nicole Fiorentino, and the Melvins’ Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover. Today we have up our new interview with Jane’s Addiction frontman and alternative rock pioneer Perry Farrell.

When it comes to alternative rock itself, 2013 should be an exciting year. Queens of the Stone Age and Alice In Chains will release new albums by early summer 2013. Dave Grohl will release his Sound City documentary and soundtrack. Jeff Ament told me that in March Pearl Jam will decide on their plans regarding completing their new album, I think it will be out by the fall, hopefully followed by a long awaited Pearl Jam World Tour. Soundgarden will tour, hopefully with more tour dates announced for fans in the south. Tool will hopefully release their new album, you never really know with them though. What we do know is that the band are pretty far along writing the music to the album. Mad Season featuring Mark Lanegan on vocals will release a few new tracks on the Above reissue box set. Lanegan is also rumored to have a covers album in the works, along with another studio album.

What are you most excited about in the world of GenX alternative rock in 2013?  Sound off in the comments section.

Lanegan. He has several projects going (Mad Season, collaboration with Duke Garwood) as well as a new anthology set with unreleased material and a new solo covers album coming in late 2013.

Local H will have a new EP coming out with a music video for “Another February.” Also Mudhoney finished their next album and that should come out some time this year. Tad Doyle is finishing up the debut album for his project, “Brothers of the Sonic Cloth.” Also a band not covered on here, Kerbdog, who worked with Jack Endino on their first album, will have a live CD/DVD out sometime this year.

New album from Pearl Jam and Mark Lanegan. I also hope the King Animal tour will take Soundgarden back to Europe.

Looking forward to seeing SG in Minneapolis on feb 2nd, excited for Grohl’s work on new Qotsa disc, i will wish as hard as i can that Tool actually releases their album. I also hope that Cornell does a few acoustic shows and would love to hear him do Black Saturday stripped down.

Good job, indeed. This is also my go-to site for grunge news, since September of 2009 with the AIC presskit for BGTWB.

“anyways, we’re aiming at changing the name of GrungeReport.net by March 1st”

I was right about the death of the GrungeReport nmae as it locks you in to a select few bands who are fading out and no new bands can ever replace them.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

It’ll be the same website, even keeping the same layout for the first month or two with the only difference being the name will say something different from GrungeReport on the banner. We will change the layout though a month or two in after people get used to the new name, and add in a few more bands covered.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

You are right though, the name is just too limiting and the word ‘Grunge’ is just too polarizing.

  • Raj said:

Definitely the new Alice in Chains album, can’t wait for it to drop.
Hopefully, they come back to Calgary as they haven’t played here in 21 years. A tour with SG would be epic.

There will be a 20th anniversary reissue of Nirvana’s 1993 album In Utero. Seeing Nirvana named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year for next year’s induction. It will be cool to see Dave and Krist there and hopefully they can do some sort of tribute to Kurt.

Say what you want about the RRHOF, love it or hate it, when you are included no one asks to leave it.

would you consider following canadian bands like big wreck or I Mother Earth?

  • Dennis said:

House of Gold and Bones 2. This site will respect Stone Sour dammit!

  • Mark said:

Eh… I guess I understand why you want to change the name and cover more bands as it is a better business decision for you. But for me (and maybe other people who have been around for a while on this site), it’s disappointing. If I wanted news on every alternative band out there, I’d go to Rolling Stone, etc. They are going to have better and more up-to-date information than you will. I always liked this site because it covered those bands that the bigger sites didn’t always cover. It’s unfortunate you couldn’t find a way to keep things the way they are and increase reader growth.

I’m not saying I’m leaving just yet, but if the inane articles such as the “Top 10 pictures of Billy Corgan” persist even after covering additional bands, I’m out of here. I’m sure they generate clicks (which I did not click), thus increasing your cash flow, but it’s a sure-fire way to piss off your readers.

I’ll contribute 20 bucks if you get rid of Magic Mike.

Afraid the site will go down hill once it expands too much. I enjoy the fact that it’s a site for a niche of music that I like that you never hear anything about anywhere else.

  • John Q Rotten said:

Black Francis recorded with Joey Santiago in Wales in the fall so maybe we’ll FINALLY get a new Pixies record in 2013.

  • peace_frog said:

Im looking forward to AIC, PJ, and the new Sevendust album.

    And I agree with this:
“I’m not saying I’m leaving just yet, but if the inane articles such as the “Top 10 pictures of Billy Corgan” persist even after covering additional bands, I’m out of here. ”

Leave a slow news day alone, or ask for some ideas in a forum that people can participate in. The quality and stantards here needs to be raised atleast a little(being kind saying a “little”).

    would about John Frusciante?
