GRUNGEREPORT.NET TO CHANGE NAME TO ALTERNATIVENATION.NET NEXT MONTH

By: 6 January 2013 63 Comments

GrungeReport.net will be changing its name to AlternativeNation.net next month. Long time reader Andrei Toth came up with the name a couple of months ago, I had run through a bunch of name ideas and when he suggested AlternativeNation.net to me I immediately knew that was the one. The domain cost nearly 500 dollars on GoDaddy since it was a premium domain, and reader Joseph Thomas stepped up and donated the money to purchase the name. I can’t thank Joseph and Andrei enough for their help regarding the new name. It really fits what we cover, Perry Farrell coined the term ‘alternative nation’ in the early 90′s to describe the young Generation X bands of the time period, the name was later used for a rock festival and a 90′s MTV series. The other advantage of the name is while it keeps us connected to the Grunge era, it allows us to expand a bit.

The change will likely occur on February 1st, if we have any issues though it could be pushed back to later in the month. We are planning on moving to a different hosting site for the change, we are currently using GoDaddy but we are not satisfied with them especially after the site being down for a full day due to their ineptitude yesterday. For the first month or two of the name change, the site will look exactly the same, except for the fact that it will say ‘AlternativeNation.net’ instead of ‘GrungeReport.net.’ After this one-two month transition period we will create a new layout for the site. The bands currently covered will remain the focus, but we will add on some additional bands. For anybody worried, GrungeReport.net will simply be redirecting to AlternativeNation.net. This is simply a name change, not GrungeReport.net closing and a new site opening. I am planning on keeping the ‘GrungeReport’ name as part of the site by changing the ‘Seattle Bands’ section name to ‘GrungeReport.’

Nice! It was actually the name of a festival in Australia in 1995 or 1996 that had great international bands. I’ll look it up.

  • me said:

    cool i like it

  • NirFooPearlTempleChainsBushGarden said:

Wasn’t that a tv show on MTV?

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

Yes. Also a rock festival in Australia in 1995. And there’s a SiriusXM station called ‘AltNation.’ The term has been in use since 1991 or so.

In keeping with the cut & paste plagiarism of stories from other news sources you’ve plagiarized a domain name.

Oh, & made $500 into the bargain.

    Seems about right.

Get the fuck out of here, you fucking moron.

Think the “new” name is kinda used up and old…

  • Huh? said:

Why is there a photo of a 15-year-old kid trying to look cool attached to this story?

  • GwynnKatie said:

I like it – and the fact that it allows you to expand the fan/band base in the issues and articles that you cover. I don’t mind the joke articles – they’re really funny sometimes.

Thanks to Andrei for the idea and to Joseph for the very large monetary contribution. I am a single working mom with a daughter in college and I would have gladly coughed up $20 to keep this place up but it would have been a sacrifice of sorts so I appreciate Joseph’s generosity…

To you folks with your poisonous comments regarding cut-and-paste…
That’s how ALL rock fan sites operate — one person or source obtains the original story and then it feeds through other sites (lastfm, loudwire, consequenceofsound, blabbermouth, etc.) and the news gets disseminated to the fan populace. I prefer to read my news hers. This site always quotes it’s sources for news so fuck off with your plagiarism BS.

I’m willing to give a helping hand with your SEO so you can see if you like how it helps your site. Just get in touch in case you’re interested.

  • Sonic_Junkie said:

Excellent choice. Every time I came to this site and saw the word “grunge” it made me cringe.

  • Butthead said:

My video rant on Elvis Presley, using Stephen Hawking voice:

Elvis Presley. King of Rock N Roll. More like King of Boring Ass Music. No one really gives a rats ass about Elvis Presley except a bunch of 75 year old grandpas who grew up during this shitty ass time in music. All he did was write dumb boring 3 power chord songs about girls and shit. He was no more innovative than the Backstreet Boys. And the Backstreet Boys fucking suck too. And for some reason, he is considered to be the second greatest musician of all time, right behind the Beatles. BWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! The Beatles were obvisously way better than gay ass Elvis Presley. And why do people keep saying he is alive??? For God’s sake!!! He is not alive. He died of a drug overdose because his music sucked so much dick.

  • Matt said:

Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it that Grunge Report has to be honest.

But hopefully the name change will garner more respect towards the site.

What additional bands are you thinking about covering?

  • Huh? said:

Why do I need to look at a photo of this kid? Is he on his way to prom?

  • Calvin McLain said:

Good site name. More RATM less Corgan BS please.

  • Huh? said:

You should change the name of the site to “High School Perez Hilton and the Taylor Momsen Guy, now with Added Photos of Gavin Rossdale.”

  • Raj said:

No surprise, I guessed Alternativereport.net when you said it was going to be a broader name.

  • Nick said:

    Bad idea, imo

  • Allura Music said:

How nice! Expanding your music news horizons is a very smart move and (mark my words) will take you to the next level Brett. Alternativenation.net is a great idea.

Now we’re going to have a whole new set of fans tuning in and getting involved in the conversations. Now wether or not that part of it will be a good thing or a bad thing will remain to be seen…… :)

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

Calvin, wish there was more RATM news. They haven’t performed in a year and a half.

Raj, I considered AlternativeReport but thought AlternativeNation just had a far better ring to it.

Huh, could you post a photo of yourself for us to judge please? I’m sorry I’m not fat, ugly, and old. I’m 21. Also I used a picture of me for this article because we have a whopping 1 ‘GrungeReport.net’ logo graphic that I used for an article on Friday. I thought a picture of the owner, me, who is making the announcement is the closest related picture I could use for the article. Trust me, posting pictures of myself on here does me no favors because there’s generally a crowd of people who are upset that I am young and not fat or whatever so I’m basically guaranteed to get shit on any time I post one.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

Again, to the people who think it’s a bad idea, I don’t get it really. GrungeReport is just too much of a polarizing and narrow name, and likely alienates some people who might think about checking out the site because they might assume we just cover Seattle bands when we cover all Generation X rock bands.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

GrungeReport was a name with a cool sound to it, but it just doesn’t work any more. The only time the name actually would have been accurate was if it was a newsgroup in the mid 90′s or something.

  • Jeanne said:

I like it Brett!! And since I am only a few years older than you (25) I enjoy seeing us youngins achieve great success as you have. Thanks Joe T for the donation too :) Looking forward to what this site has to offer moving forward.

    RIP grungereport

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

But Spoonman don’t worry, GrungeReport is continuing, just under a new name! Like I said we’ll have a section on the site called ‘GrungeReport’ as well so the name will always be alive.

  • oh well...whatever...nevermind said:

    I like it.

  • Fuzhi said:

Good name. As long as you will continue to cover all the news from the top grunge bands (and not just crybabies Love and Corgan)I dont really care what the site is called.

  • Dan said:

The new name better describes the site. Still, I will miss the old name :(

Whatever you call the site; I will continue going here everyday. Thanks for everything that you do, your site rocks!

  • fat bob moon beam said:

    why not just altnation?

  • Deviate said:

    Brett,

I think this is a bad idea. I like one of the other readers suggestions of “rockthatmatters.net”. But in all honesty, I think GrungeReport should just remain. I’m not fond of that label either, but even the musicians that don’t like it still say it or use it. There are books like “Grunge is Dead” and “The Oral History of Grunge”. No one bitched about those. It’s just a more specific term used to reference a specific era in rock music.

I think Alternative Nation sounds extremely bland, much like “alternative” music has become.

Truthfully I have always hated the term “Alternative” more than I dislike the germ “grunge”. Seriously, alternative to what? What’s it an alternative to? It’s rock music. Period.

Brett, I sincerely hope you reconsider the name, or the change all together.

  • Deviate said:

    term*

  • Zakk de la Wylde said:

I like how more bands will be included with the new “alternativenation.net”. I would much rather read about a wider variety of bands than know what “billco” ate for breakfast this morning.

  • GenXLady said:

I like the new name because it allows Brett to expand and cover a lot more. That will draw more people in to read stuff. Didn’t he also say he was keeping the “Grunge Report” for the “Seattle Bands” section? People can still narrow it down then if they want to.

As for the age thing, good music influences across the ages. Maybe in different ways because of different life experiences, but in relevant ways for all. This old(er than my 20′s) lady is glad you put the time and effort into this site, Brett, no matter how old or young you are. There are a lot of good reads on here. Cool!

  • Christine said:

    Thank you for the update.

  • Dennis said:

Thanks to Brett, Andrei, and JT.

I see the name change as little more than Miller Lite changing to the “vortex” bottle. It is what is inside the bottle/website that I care about.

Long live the gruge rep….err,..Alternative Nation.
