SHINEDOWN FRONTMAN BRENT SMITH SAYS SOUNDGARDEN’S SUPERUNKNOWN CHANGED HIS LIFE

By: 9 January 2013 17 Comments

ArtistDirect.com have up another article where musicians discuss Soundgarden’s influence on them. Here is an excerpt where Shinedown frontman Brent Smith discusses memories of Soundgarden: “The first time I heard Soundgarden was “Flower”. That’s going way early. I was in ninth grade, and I was at a house party. “Flower” was playing on a record in the background. I saw the cover of Louder Than Love too at that point. A year or so went by, and I didn’t go out of my way to learn anymore. Then, of course, Badmotorfinger happened. That’s when they started working with Terry Date. I remember seeing “Jesus Christ Pose” on MTV Headbangers Ball, and I was like, “I remember that voice!” I found out more about them at the time. Then, Superunknown changed my life hands down. It’s not so much for the singles but the deeper stuff in that record. “My Wave” was a huge song for me. “The Day I Tried To Live” is a classic Soundgarden song. My favorite song on that album was probably “4th of July”. That song is almost not natural. When the second verse starts, the fact that Chris Cornell sings the main line, but there’s the third octave behind him that he’s singing, which is stratospherically high, is amazing. I never heard anyone sing like that. It changed my view on what a rock singer was supposed to convey on record. That’s a big record.”

My favorite SG album, though they’re all good!

Too bad Brent didn’t take any notes on songwriting for SG. Shinedown writes the worst songs. I hate their newest record with a passion.

Too bad Shinedown sucks just as bad as Nickelback.

Mutual respect for Soundgarden with the guy, but I’ve definitely never been a fan of Shinedown. Sorry.

The point of no return was their cover of Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” where he gospel’ed the vocals. Was nails on a chalkboard to me.

Shinedown is much better than Nickelback. They have deeper songs and dotn sing about sex or partying like Nickelback do.

  • NickG said:

Shinedown and Nickelback are like the Poison and Motley Crue of our generation. I can so hear Brent singing, “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn”

  • Dennis said:

Haters, Brent can sing. Listen to him do “Simple Man.”

“Bully” is a shit song though.

  • NickG said:

^ That’s all I was saying. He took notes on Cornell’s vocals but not his or SG’s songwriting in general. What good is a good singer without a good song?

NickG youre trolling man. Give it a rest.

The only views that mattered to me were Jeff’s.

well, he (brent) created the sound of madness

4th of July is definately one of the best songs ever.

Shindown is one of the better bands out today. Stop crying.

    It’s 4:03 and I can’t sleep

Not surprising at all to hear the guy from Shinedown saying this, when his shitty band tries their hardest (in vain) to ape the mighty Soundgarden.

  • lilrockable said:

^^^ in no way is shinedown trying to ape soundgarden. I don’t like shinedown bar four songs but if you think they sound anything like soundgarden you need to get your fucking ears checked. After reading this Please proceed to insert generic douchebag comments “duhhhh Bush,STP,Creed, and Silverchair ripped off grungeeee, mark arm said so therefore I must believe because I’m a weak minded asshole”
