Awesome! I like the *Astronaut/Space Station/Losing Sanity* take…
One of their best – very proud of AIC. Well done guys…
I love this video. It has a vibe that’s similar to the movie “Moon” and towards the end it takes on a nightmarish tone like “Event Horizon”.
I never really noticed it before but the song does have a space-y sort of sound, especially the guitars.
Anyone notice a similarity to Get Born Again? They both have that sci-fi theme going for them.
Pretty cool…Much better than SG’s video for Been Away too Long…
i love how EVERY Alice video kinda makes you squirm a bit…they add something a little unsettling in all of them.
edit my last post…maybe not check my brain so much
Still think this is a bad song. Worrying that they thought this was good enough to even be a preview digital single. A Looking In View>>>>>>>>>>>Hollow
Wow, what a boring video… I prefer the lyric vid.
@ Brett — why do you not like it? Just curious.
Thanks in advance if you respond.
^^Does there have to be a “why” to not like a song!?
Troll. Brett always has (Author) beside his name.
No. Johnny that’s incorrect. I posted this story therefore I have (Author)
Mike posted the story, so if he comments it’ll say (author) next to it. A couple of times people have posed as me in the comments but I discredit them as trolls pretty quickly.
The song is just boring. A tired boring riff that just sounds stale, really boring vocal melody and the ‘hook’ is lacking. The best part of the song is the ‘silence’ part that’s the only memorable part of the song. The lyrics seem by the numbers AIC as well, I don’t hear the emotional sincerity and real story that I heard on A Looking In View (or many of the songs on Black Gives Way to Blue). It basically sounds like a Black Gives Way to Blue B-side. I think a lot of people are saying they like it because it’s AIC and they love AIC so much. If this song came out and was just by some random band nobody would give it a second thought.
Although I’m a little disenchanted that the band wasn’t in the video (just like Soundgarden’s, heh), I really thought that the video was awesome. It got a lot better towards the end too.
Brett’s review pretty much summarizes my view.
I wished the band would have been in it.
“I think a lot of people are saying they like it because it’s AIC and they love AIC so much.”
This is how I feel about everything the new AIC has put out, including BGWTB.
I’m very horny right now.
Yeah, I have to agree with Brett and his review. The song’s guitar riff is pretty good but the song does lack something. Maybe we are all just expecting too much since BGWTB was so good. I guess we’ll see what the rest of their album brings.
As for the video … interesting I guess but at the same time, I too wish there were a few shots of the band in it.
Anyway if I had to rate all AIC albums:
Jars of Files: A+
Black Way Gives To Blue: C+
The video is cool, and it enhances the song.
The video totally reminds me of Mastodon’s “Oblivion” video. Look it up if you’re not familiar with it.
Just because it sounds like a song off Black Gives way to Blue doesn’t make it a bad thing. AiC are not young anymore, and they don’t have the same drive and angst as they did 20 years ago(just like every other band). Do they really need to change their sound? At least they’re making new, original music that stays true to their roots.
I find it amusing that people will give this teaser song negative reviews because it sounds like it could have been on BGWTB, but as soon as Pearl Jam releases a new song that sounds exactly like Backspacer everyone will be riding PJs dicks.
Is he one? said:
“Does there have to be a “why” to not like a song!?”
For me — actually, yes. For others — like you, probably no.
I am very specific and detail-driven.
I have songs dissected note-by-note by the third time I listen.
If I dislike them there are very specific reasons why.
“I think a lot of people are saying they like it because it’s AIC and they love AIC so much. If this song came out and was just by some random band nobody would give it a second thought.”
Well thanks for at least explaining. I don’t find it boring. It’s like a journey, the way Rooster was like a journey. To me it’s ethereal, but then that’s just me. And I do love the band and have for nearly 20+ years now, as I do Nirvana, PJ, Soundgarden, etc.
But — if some random-ass band came out with this song it would NOT be the same. You would not have Will DuVall’s pipes at harmony or Jerry’s guitar style. Period. And it’s the way Will sounds behind Jerry, the high notes and delicate tone to his harmony and Jerry’s lead riffs and the lyrics:
…”silence — so loud… silence, I can’t tell my up from down…”
Not because it’s them – but because I believe it to haunting and dark in it’s nature. They just happen to be very good at haunting and dark. I am also a huge Type O Negative fan. It’s just that this musical style is what I identify with when I think of Alice In Chains.
Some random band playing *Hollow* would be like listening to some shitty bar band covering *Jesus Christ Pose*, or *Present Tense*.
Though I am a huge AIC fan, I have to agree with Brett as well. Hopefully the next song released absolutely blows my mind- as I expect from AIC! On a side note, though I support the band moving forward, I picture what all these songs would sound like with Layne on vocals- what a different spin they would have! God, he was phenomenal!
*but because I believe it to be haunting and dark in it’s nature.
I think my ratings would look something like this as well. Dirt’s their best (and my favorite) with Jar of Flies right behind it.
I like aspects of the video but….what the F? A man in outer space for 2 years growing a 3rd nipple on his shoulder? What am I missing?
I kind of feel the same way about Hollow being just okay, or even subpar by AIC standards. A Looking In View was incredible. This is kind of boring in comparison. I prefer quite a bit of Cantrell solo work to Hollow, to be honest.
I actually love this song! Give it a chance Brett. The more you keep listening to it, the more you will like it I believe.
Cannot wait until the full album comes out.
I agree with MJ.
Personally I’m not a fan of the newer stuff. I’m not against them performing and writing as AIC. I saw them on the BGWTB tour, and they were great to see live, but the recent stuff just doesn’t do it for me.
I love Alice in Chains, but I find the music videos just aren’t as good as they used to be. 90′s music videos were great, a lot of the bands from the 90′s who still put out music videos aren’t as creative or abstract as they used to be.
I think I need to here this song really fucking LOUD because right now it is not doing any justice for me. I think any Alice song must be heard at its loudest in order to get the full experience in my view.
Bring on the new album!
This song doesn’t do it for me either, but the video is cool.
Some of y’all are crazy town when it comes to AIC.
Here are the real grades:
Jar of Flies: A-
Black Way Gives To Blue: B+
I disagree with pretty much everything Brett said ( ), especially this:
“If this song came out and was just by some random band nobody would give it a second thought.”
If I heard another band release something like this I’d freak out – finally, someone modern who knows how to write a proper metal riff and doesn’t have to paste screamo on top of it.
It seems like rock has gone in two polar directions – one is super over-the-top double bass drum screamo rock, the other is menstruating-Scott Wieland pussy rock. The heavy half is capable of rocking but doesn’t always make great music, the pussy half is capable of producing better music but doesn’t rock anymore. That’s why I like Facelift and Dirt so much – the PERFECT combination of heaviness and compelling musical ideas.
woow, the girl is pretty…and the video seems expensive…
It pains me that Brett and some other people don’t like this song, cause in my opinion it’s great, and even much better than “Looking in view”.
And Greg, how can you put only “A-” to “Jar Of Flies”???
Come on people! A lot of Alice’s songs are mellow with the safe riffs over and over. It’s a groove thing man – not every song has to purposefully, overtly TRY to be epic. This isn’t Metallica. It is what it is. A lot of their songs that are similar to this one in that way
well it says that the video isn’t available in my country so I haven’t watched it yet, but I don’t think it will change my view of the song any better. I’ve been a fan of the band for a long time and I loved every albums they’ve done, including BGWTB and Jerry’s two solo albums. But when I first heard this song, I don’t know exactly why but for the first time I was disappointed. It does have the riff, groove and overall sound that anyone can tell it’s Alice In Chains, but there’s just something missing. Maybe they have really moved on from ghost of Layne.
gamermwm, agreed. I’m sure they would’ve said the same thing if “Rotten Apple” had been released as a promo single in early January 1994.
Cool it’ll get plenty of airplay on MTV
I think the song sounds like Get Born Again of all things. This wasn’t even going to be a single so why make a video? Oh, they’re just confused like Soundgarden. We don’t want to make music videos but we have to sell records, so hear kids “buy this”
@Greg: Nice misogyny, loser.
Jenele, you nailed it.
In terms of “Get Born Again.”
“And it’s not lost on any member of Alice that even as they move forward, it’s impossible to escape their past. Kinney says, “Sometimes people ask us, ‘Wouldn’t Layne have been pissed off that we did this?’ And I tell them it would have been the opposite: he would have been pissed off that it took us so long to do this. We’re not doing this for money; there is no money in the music business anymore. Jerry and I funded the whole album, and we spent lots of our own money, because we believe in this. And one of the reasons I’m doing this is so more light is turned on to something where the light was turned off.”
“I like aspects of the video but….what the F? A man in outer space for 2 years growing a 3rd nipple on his shoulder? What am I missing?”
OK – so I have watched this video three times in total and this is my interpretation or *take* as you will – it’s not right/correct – it’s just how it hit me… He’s on a futuristic space station, experimenting with growing plants/herbs in a sealed environment – perhaps to feed the planet. He’s signed on for a LONG time and he knows it — hence the sad looks he gives to his wife/girlfriend/lover at the beginning. She’s so beautiful, warm, drinking wine – but he’s in such a stark cold environment – a complete contrast to her. Then things wane thin — he notices she’s not wearing the gold heart pendant anymore – obviously a gift of love/commitment from him prior to departure. (…All you colors turn to grey – it don’t matter anyway…) So…
1. What in the HELL is that THING that he’s experimenting on in the sealed glass box — I mean WTF IS that!!!??? It’s like pulsating, breathing, looks like something which washes up on the beach after a bad storm. It’s living… but what? And he’s spraying something
(CO2? oxygen leftover from photosynthesis?, something) from the plant into that chamber – like to keep it alive.
2. Either he is hallucinating at the end and that fucking growth is part of the hallucination because that is the only living thing he has spent time with on a daily basis for over 500 days,
3. He somehow transmitted cell tisue to his neck (note the part where he is experimenting on that pulsating *thing*, and he hallucinates his wife/girlfriend/lover’s hand and he recoils) — at one point he has blood on his glove – but who’s blood? – his — or the blood from that creepy ass creature?
That video is just creepy.
The isolation emotional tone is uncomfortable.
So I guess the director did his job.
You rock. I want to hug your neck.

Great music video.
Why thank you dear – have a lovely weekend.
@Josh, very cool quote. Thanks!
I like beans
@MJ – Grow a sack, way to miss the point. Easily distracted, much?
@ThemBoners – I dunno, too many throwaway tracks compared to their other albums.
Great quote Josh!
aic is like the poster boys for my vevo right now. if sg did that people would be condemning them straight to hell
i havent watched the video yet. i was saving it. i just hope its not captain trips mixed with the stupid guy who went on a trip with no map directions or concept of asking a friendly grey for help.
There are FRIENDLY greys!!!???
Inquiring minds want to know.
That was funny ALICE. Heh
all depends on what you consider “friendly”
its a mystery isnt it?
