I never really noticed it before but the song does have a space-y sort of sound, especially the guitars.
Anyone notice a similarity to Get Born Again? They both have that sci-fi theme going for them.

The best part of the song is the ‘silence’ part that’s the only memorable part of the song. The lyrics seem by the numbers AIC as well, I don’t hear the emotional sincerity and real story that I heard on A Looking In View (or many of the songs on Black Gives Way to Blue). It basically sounds like a Black Gives Way to Blue B-side. I think a lot of people are saying they like it because it’s AIC and they love AIC so much. If this song came out and was just by some random band nobody would give it a second thought.

Well thanks for at least explaining. I don’t find it boring. It’s like a journey, the way Rooster was like a journey. To me it’s ethereal, but then that’s just me. And I do love the band and have for nearly 20+ years now, as I do Nirvana, PJ, Soundgarden, etc.
But — if some random-ass band came out with this song it would NOT be the same. You would not have Will DuVall’s pipes at harmony or Jerry’s guitar style. Period. And it’s the way Will sounds behind Jerry, the high notes and delicate tone to his harmony and Jerry’s lead riffs and the lyrics:
…”silence — so loud… silence, I can’t tell my up from down…”
Not because it’s them – but because I believe it to haunting and dark in it’s nature. They just happen to be very good at haunting and dark. I am also a huge Type O Negative fan. It’s just that this musical style is what I identify with when I think of Alice In Chains.

OK – so I have watched this video three times in total and this is my interpretation or *take* as you will – it’s not right/correct – it’s just how it hit me… He’s on a futuristic space station, experimenting with growing plants/herbs in a sealed environment – perhaps to feed the planet. He’s signed on for a LONG time and he knows it — hence the sad looks he gives to his wife/girlfriend/lover at the beginning. She’s so beautiful, warm, drinking wine – but he’s in such a stark cold environment – a complete contrast to her. Then things wane thin — he notices she’s not wearing the gold heart pendant anymore – obviously a gift of love/commitment from him prior to departure. (…All you colors turn to grey – it don’t matter anyway…) So…
1. What in the HELL is that THING that he’s experimenting on in the sealed glass box — I mean WTF IS that!!!??? It’s like pulsating, breathing, looks like something which washes up on the beach after a bad storm. It’s living… but what? And he’s spraying something
(CO2? oxygen leftover from photosynthesis?, something) from the plant into that chamber – like to keep it alive.
2. Either he is hallucinating at the end and that fucking growth is part of the hallucination because that is the only living thing he has spent time with on a daily basis for over 500 days,
OR
3. He somehow transmitted cell tisue to his neck (note the part where he is experimenting on that pulsating *thing*, and he hallucinates his wife/girlfriend/lover’s hand and he recoils) — at one point he has blood on his glove – but who’s blood? – his — or the blood from that creepy ass creature?
That video is just creepy.
The isolation emotional tone is uncomfortable.
