STONE TEMPLE PILOTS FRONTMAN SCOTT WEILAND PLANNING SOLO TOUR

By: 13 January 2013 15 Comments

(Possibly former) Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland is planning a 2013 solo tour according to his Facebook. It is not known if this will be another ‘Greatest Hits’ tour like last year’s, or if he will have new material. Weiland was fired from Stone Temple Pilots last fall according to Slash. Weiland and STP have not denied the story or even commented on it. Weiland’s last solo album of original material was 2008′s Happy in Galoshes. In 2011 he released a covers album and Christmas album.

If he’s playing because he loves music and wants to go through his catalog i.e Cornell and Vedder..then fine..but not as a cash grab with a shitty side band..he better start playing guitar ALOT more….

I like a few songs from his first solo album, but that’s it.

Maybe he should try getting the Magnificent Bastards together for an album, or start a whole new band.

I think his ego probably makes him just unbearable to be around, so this is where he’s ended up.

He and Doug Green indicated on their New Jersey stop of the GH tour that new material was in the works. And @Ed, he cant run the catalogue bc of royalty and ownership sharing issues. It gets TONS of shit at these things when people are let down that it isnt more STP/VR comprehensive. Not sure if youve seen his solo band live, but I find them to be crazy good artists and work well together. I see a few musicians in my dayjob, nightjob and family, so all that factors into my humble opinion. Just my thoughts, they arent second rate, they just arent the band he grew to fame with and I ADORE STP, so I cant compare Jeremy or Doug for instance, to Dean and Robert. I consider them a league of their own. But they rock their mortal league on the A side of ability in my book. But. To each their own. Doug Green is his own brand and has an impressive career leading into the Weiland band, but its a synergy with Scott that makes their live gigs better than recorded solo material. Plus, he sorta kicks ass on the guitar in a way that screams that Slash can go to hell and take his faux authority ass with him. He is in no way STP’s spokesperson. And, STP ended their tour in excellent for in 2012. I saw some of the ‘worst’ acclaimed stops and the slant put on the stories, well. It was steep compared to what the audience endured. There are some expectation differentials in the world of Weiland.

I’m not certain what point you’re trying to make in there. Whether the Pilots ended strong or not, what the audience felt or not. But having seen them in 2012, having listened to many live recordings from that period- the shows got shorter and shorter, the setlists more standardized and boring as hell, and Weiland less reliable, wasted, and the whole thing ending in a whimper. It didn’t end strong at all. All those great plans for 2012 got scrapped (20th anniversary of CORE).

If they would have fired STP, they would have some kind of announcement saying the band parted ways with STP. Let’s wait for more time to pass to see if the DeLeo brothers reform Talk Show or Army of Anyone.

I don’t Army of Anyone will happen anytime soon because Richard Patrick is busy with Filter working on a new album or releasing it this year.

Well when ya can’t get any other credible artists to perform with ya, it’s time to start doing the solo thing exclusively. I’m sure he’ll have his FOR HIRE band out in full force covering Sex Type Thing and Plush as best they can. Does anyone know the legality in playing lots of STP songs, pretty sure he can do it live all he wants so long as it’s not distributed for sale, right?

I wish the best for the DeLeo Brothers as they are very talented musicians and it’s disappointing artistically they can’t team up with someone with great vocals like Weiland but without all the baggage he has.

one of ya made a valid point i wana see solo as in just him and a guitar that would be so straight

Can Weiland play guitar all that well solo? IE, just him on stage with an acoustic?

I will firmly vouch for Army of Anyone. That record was great, Richard Patrick had a voice as good as Weiland’s, had a unique sort of husky rasp, as Weiland possessed, and Ray Luzier is a killer drummer. They really had ALL the right pieces in place with Army of Anyone. And NO goddamn drama from their lead singer! Sadly not enough people bought the album (you dumb fuckers) and that, as they say, was that…

Maybe his ego does make him unbearable, but there’s no denying Weiland is way talented and doesn’t need to kiss anyone’s ass if he doesn’t want to. I wish him luck on his solo tour and hope he gets the drinking thing more under control. But if he doesn’t, so what?
    The guy is a STAR.

  • Philip said:

Hey man I’m rooting for him too. Do I want to see him go down in flames? Hell no, no one should wish for that. But there is a difference between having to kiss people’s asses to get along, and being reliable and committed to your bandmates, the people who have stuck with you (or done their best to) for 20 years…

I don’t believe Weiland has ever played Sex Type Thing or Plush at any of his solo gigs. Pull that out of your ass? STP’s tours may have an air of “cash grab” about them, but his solo gigs have not. And you’d never catch either of them touring with Haelstrom…

I wouldn’t quote anything from Slash of all people to be serious. When his statements are pot stirrers means he’s getting close to his pharmacy repeat date. When they are happy and everything is funny means he got his refills. Same ol Slash….
No grunge era singer has put even close to the touring and project mileage Scott has. Not too many musicians period never mind just grunge era singers.
Plus the best thing about him is that if he does talk he speaks like a regular dude….f’d up or not. He doesn’t need a fancy Top Hat or Face Paint or lazer beams, etc. He can go out there in a $10 t-shirt and green work pants and make an enormous stand out stage presence.

    He really does suck….

This works! He wont be able to let anyone down but himself. His solo album was great, and he is an extremely talented individual, but doesn’t play well with others.
