JOHN FRUSCIANTE DISCUSSES CREATIVITY, ART, DEATH IN NEW ESSAY

By: 16 January 2013 10 Comments

Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante has released a new essay entitled “The Creative Act” to his website. The essay discusses Frusciante’s ideas regarding life, death, art, and the creative process. Frusciante also discusses the meaning of the phrase “The Will to Death,” the title of his fifth solo studio album. Here’s an excerpt:

“The phrase The Will To Death refers to the underlying, predominantly unintentional, organization in works by artists who love and are devoted to the creative force, but hate what they see of the life force and its ways. It is a set of abstract principles which may be applied in the creative act. In artistic symbolism, one comes close to death, and not only does he not die, but he lives more fully for having had the experience. It may be conceived as a set of musical/mathematical formulae which the musician utilizes without knowing it.”

Shut the fuck up. You aren’t on some higher plane of existence just because you’re a fucking musician.

I think John is just a very deep thinker, and has a need to explore and understand what drives him. Also a need to explore and understand what drives the world around him and the people in it too. Have you ever seen the videotaped interviews with him while he was in the midst of full blown heroin addiction? He talked a lot about this type of stuff, though I think the addiction definitely influenced those interviews too. Anyway, if he is exploring his creativity in his own way, it is his choice to do so.

You need to realize that John is a musical genius and a true artist in every sense of the word. He does not in any profound way think he is above anyone else musically or otherwise. Also, he is not a political person at all. John is all about expressing the truth within himself. His lyrical subject matter is based on god, happiness, regret, death, enlightenment and life. In my mind, he is one greatest musicians of all time.

I love Frusciante’s music, and have bought his solo albums, but that blog post read like a straight drug trip.

Frusciante is a selfless musician whose goal is to produce meaningful art and music. I don’t think he is trying to sound pretentious or superior. He is simply a deep thinker that was strongly influenced by a near death experience and is interested in sharing his deep thoughts with the world.
