MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN REVEALS THAT HE IS WRITING AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, SAYS FANS NEED TO SUPPORT ROCK BANDS

By: 24 January 2013 16 Comments

Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer frontman Maynard James Keenan revealed in a new interview with Phoenix New Times that he is writing an autobiography, “I think there are a lot of misconceptions with some people that, all of a sudden, I was born when my first band came out.  I actually had a life before that, and there were a lot of accomplishments. [The book] will kind of chronicle why it is I got to where I am, and why I got to where you knew about me.”

Keenan also discussed the problem with people not paying for the music they listen to, “There’s a disconnect between people not buying music and not understanding why [bands] go away.  There are people who are like monkeys in a cage just hitting the coke button. They don’t really get that for [musicians and artists] to do these things, they have to fund them. They have to have something to pay the rent.”

I ain’t never bought an album my whole life and probably I will never do it.

    @Joe

I suppose you “ain’t never” been to an English class either, eh?

People that don’t buy albums should take pride in the cheap robot music on the radio today.

I guess teenage angst does not pay as well these days.

Fans do need to support rock bands, but at the same time, so many bands take advantage of their fans. Many “classic rock” bands, for example, charge far beyond $100 for concert tickets because they know their fans will pay it. After fees, it costs almost $100 per ticket to see Eddie and he doesn’t have to share the cash with a band or pay for special effects. Hell, look at what a rip-off the Ten Club & other fan clubs have become. Why do artists do this? Because they can. It doesn’t matter if they’re already multi-millionaires; there’s always more money to be made. It’s my guess that fans don’t care about paying for music when they’re paying so much to see the band live & paying $35 for a concert t-shirt. That being said, I don’t think it’s an excuse for fans to steal music. Especially with newer bands who haven’t yet established themselves, these artists have bills to pay. It’s not like the old days where you’d sign a record deal and the company would give you a nice advance.

The idea of pirating music isn’t a new idea.. i remember copying music from friends on cassettes 20 years ago, and what about the bootleggers?

buy the t-shirt or other shit.. usually the profit from merchindice goes “straight” to band.

and it’s good to listen to some of the songs or even the whole record in advance, becouse there is so many “we can play” bands with no real message or talent out there.. so it’s kinda overblown in a sense.

to me if i really like a record i will buy it..

Joe you should be ashamed. At least don’t say it, there’s nothing cool about that.

‘Joe’ and ‘David’ have one another’s cocks in their mouths. Both of you suck shit.

Maynard lives life on his own terms. I respect that.
It was really great to see that after the first EP Opiate he had a lot of metalheads liking the band. Thus he would start performing in a dress and this drove the metalheads crazy and those fans went away.

Hey- assholes. Maynard is not referring to the bands with more money than they need, those who have ‘made it’ per se. He is speaking of the underground, the street-level, the countless other rock bands struggling, slogging through the muck, fighting the good fight, who deserve money for their music, their blood sweat and tears. Who need it frankly- if you love their music and want them to continue making more of it…

Too many in today’s culture just take/ steal what they want online for free. That’s the bullshit Keenan is speaking of.

  • Peter said:

Oh and stick to your native tongue ‘David’ because you suck at English.

  • Abe Froman said:

WAAAAHHHHH Maynard hasn’t made a Tool album in 7 years!!!

Maybe they only have so much material. . . would you rather they put out an album every other year & suck & fade into obscurity?

He’s one of the smartest musicians out there, & if you don’t believe me look at how quickly his shows sell out all the time every time.

  • david said:

fuck your self peter , this guy maynard should be in the studio with the other members of tool working and not telling bullshit in a paper, and yes , im spanish my english is shit too xDD

His work, as well as other forms of art is all subject to interpretation. Anybody mocking him genuinely, has not come close to his mental capacity. I know the guitars sound cool or the drums are ultra tribal or whatever hahaha (bonuses) (horns up high right?)… the messages are what keeps me captivated. I identified and felt so much more on other “art projects” outside of the band Puscifer, … however The Humbling River should not be denied as a profound musical masterpiece… same mind, different tones in the background. I am not saying I get everything he is putting out, he has been dead on with some of my own life experiences in his messages which I hope time will unravel more.

P.S. Fuck you toooooo, to all the Fuck you people (past, present, and future… fuck each and everyone of you) HAHAHAHA!!! :)

How can you expect him to be in the studio recording if everyone is stealing his music? Do you have any idea how much studios cost? Maynard, if the fans have an issue with funding you, I’d stop giving them what they want and find a new trade – we all know people suck and you get what you pay for so if they don’t pay they don’t get shit and that’s that! I stopped buying CDs after the newest release – I didn’t like the new sort of style you presented. People really liked what you were before and even if you did change, if your music went back to the original bad ass it was I’d pay for more shit.
