CHRIS CORNELL DISCUSSES HOW HE KEEPS HIS VOICE IN SHAPE
In a recent interview with Pandora, Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell discussed how he keeps his voice in shape, “I read the Joe Cocker interview and they asked him if he ever had voice problems, and he said yeah when he doesn’t sing, like if he had six months off or a year off. That’s the problem I have, if I’m not in it everyday then there’s sort of an arc, like rehearsals help and my voice has to warm up, but it’s a muscle. Some of it’s taking care of it and some of it is abusing it I think.”

So…. Chris voice is IN SHAPE???
@RodeOrm Are you deaf? Have you not heard him sing lately?
His voice is in DAMN fine shape!!!! ‘Nuff said!
The man isn’t 25 anymore, there’s wear and tear to everything as you grow older, especially when you use your voice the way he does day in and day out, but he still outsings any 25 year old out there at the moment.
Oh yes, his voice is recently in an awesome shape!
I disagree somewhat with the premise that just because he’s older his voice automatically won’t sound as good. Guys like Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden or Rob Halford from Judas Priest are examples of much older singers who frequently use the higher register and they can still hit those notes flawlessly. I just don’t think Chris ever learned how to take care of his voice properly when he was young. I just saw them in DC last week and he still sounds great but he has been struggling to hit some of those notes since the first Audioslave album.
He’s always struggled a bit live.
No I am not deaf, in studio he sounds just fine, but have you heard him live!?!?
If you have ever heard Chris Cornell singing Rage Against The Machine songs, you will know the guy isnt the same voice as he once was even during his post Soundgarden solo years in 1999-2000
enjoy
By the way, why couldnt Chris Cornell keep up his Soundgarden type voice during all those years in Audioslave
I’ve seen him sing live 5 times, and yeah, his “live” voice never quite matches his studio voice. Whose does though? You’re always going to sound more polished in the studio, and the high notes are going to get harder and harder to hit the longer you sing. His melodies challenge his voice every night he performs, so the regular strain definitely affects his live singing.
RödeOrm, Chris on a not so good day can be so so..
But Cornell on a good day blows every 20 year old singer away. Look up the Shepherd’s Bush show they did last year and see what i mean.
A lot people try to deny it but over the course of 20 years or so your voice does change. Axl Rose’s voice sounds different on Chinese Democracy, his breathing is all weird. Robert Plant can no longer hit the high notes. Mike Patton couldn’t sing Epic to save his life these days.
Chris actually sounds surprisingly well, the times we think he is off is really because his voice is shot and really strained.
Chris Cornell should get a throat vocal chord enhancement operation to correct his singing caliber back to the year 1994

Chris has an amazing voice still. Seen him 4 times in the past 2 years and he still has that incredible range
Apparently some people HAVEN’T seen Chris live in the last 6 years or so. If they had, they would know that his voice and range continue to impress fans and media alike. When he performs, he gives 120%.
Saw him doing songbook in dc, and fairfax with sg, and just saw him in dc. Songbook blew my fukn mind man, oh he’s still got it. Then he rokd the fuck out in fairfax. Then he rocked the fuk out in dc! Ive come away even more impressed each time, i didnt think that was possible. I think cornells voice is kinda like jack vs scotch. Early on it was jack daniels to the face. now that he is aged, its kinda like a fine scotch, he will give you traces of that “bite” but your too mesmorized by the smoothness, you may not even notice. But just as sure as i think his voice will actually get better with time, he will damn sure lead you fukd up promisland everytime…..if you let him.
Whose voice sounds just as good live as in the studio?
LAYNE STALEY’s, that’s who.
Glad Lanegan made it out of Seattle’s dark drug times. Wish Layne could have, too.

Ok, hold on. I am not sure which statement you disagree with, but it cannot be mine as I never said getting older automatically impedes your vocal abilities (hence the “especially when you use your voice the way he does day in and day out” comment). Your voice will change as you grow older, and sometimes it affects your singing voice, i.e. Elton John, who doesn’t sing rock n’ roll but still can’t hit the higher notes anymore, Plant (as someone already pointed out), Daltrey…. And just so we are clear, Bruce Dickinson’s singing style and technique is vastly different from Cornell’s. Bruce is a great singer, but he is all head voice, while Cornell uses glottal compression and sings with a lot more distortion, so I doubt very much that Dickinson could do what Cornell has been doing for the past 20-25 years without sounding a little rougher. Axl has switched to using a lot of his head voice too these days, which is why he sometimes lacks the “rasp”, as some people put it.
All he has to do is just the complete opposite of what Vedder’s been doing the last decade and his voice will be in tip top shape!! Thank The Lord Cornell doesn’t smoke like a chimney anymore like Ed does. Ed just doesn’t give a shit anymore!
Jack Irons = Troll!
I am pretty sure Chris has had several operations on his throat. I remember him saying that he had developed nodules and had to have them removed.. As he said, when he doesn’t use his voice he has to struggle a bit to get it back in shape. I think his voice sounds exceptional lately. Meow
