STONE GOSSARD REVEALS WHEN PEARL JAM PLAN TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM

By: 12 February 2013 49 Comments

Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard did an interview on Italian radio yesterday and revealed the following about Pearl Jam’s 10th studio album, “I cannot tell you an exact date, but if all goes according to plan, we will have a new Pearl Jam album in nine or twelve months.” We are currently in February 2013, so Gossard seems to be indicating a November 2013- February 2014 release for the new album. Pearl Jam have only released two albums in the last decade: 2006′s Pearl Jam and 2009′s Backspacer.

Binaural was also recorded in the second decade of the band. This will be the first record in the third decade of Pearl Jam. Yes!

  • Jerome Turner said:

    And what about Riot Act???

  • Miff said:

Riot Act was released in 2002, just over a decade ago. Damn I feel old.

  • cooterpuppet said:

It’s 2013, a decade is 10 years, the past decade would be from 2003, the article is written correctly

Take your time… as long as it takes…. as long as it comes out as soon as possible… i.e. tomorrow or November… or February 2014… but please no later!

I’m really interested to see what direction they take with the tenth album. Lots of experimentation I hope!
In the meantime I’m really enjoying Jeff’s solo album…

    Jesus, finally.

  • Kevin Argue said:

The author is playing it a bit fast and loose with the definition of a decade. 2000-2010 is essentially the second decade of the band, we’re into the 3rd.

Hopefully the reason it is taking so long is that they sat Eddie down after playing “Ole” live a few times and had a come to Jesus talk about what is and is not appropriate new material for a band of their caliber….

  • juca said:

    @Mitch Michaelson
I agree with you, the track “ole” it is unacceptable that among the new Pearl Jam album, music of shit!

  • Nerdypjfangirl said:

Well now we know not to expect a tour announcement for at least another year.

  • versus said:

Pearl Jam is a great band, but “experimental” has never been their thing. They do what they do better than just about anyone, and they’re better off sticking close to that formula. Backspacer was my favorite PJ album since No Code, and I’m sure they’re taking their time to put together another solid album.

  • aaron said:

way to cite your source! this site is the Stone Temple Pilots of music sites, in that they steal everything without attribution

  • Mitch Michaelson said:

Versus, are you saying that “No Code” was not an experimental record? If so, I’d disagree with you.

  • RL said:

Decades are periods of 10 years which end with a year ending in zero. Last decade was 2001-2010, so technically Pearl Jam released three albums in the last decade: Riot Act (2002), Pearl Jam (2006) and Backspacer (2009).
If the writer meant “in the last 10 years” he should have written that explicitly and refrain from using the word decade. It is not a matter of mathematics, it is a matter of using words correctly.

  • Is he one? said:

Decade means ten years, you’re wrong RL. Yes it is mostly used in the way you are describing but it can be used the way it was used in the article here too.

  • Is he one? said:

To prove my point, from wikipedia:

“Although any period of 10 years is a decade, a convenient and frequently referenced interval is based on the tens digit of a calendar year, as in using “1960s” to represent the decade from 1960 to 1969.”

  • kamal said:

Good can’t wait..a concert in SE Asia after that please. since 1995 and waiting. Pearl Jam build to last!

  • RL said:

    @Is He One?
Well, if you think Wikipedia is the most reliable source of information out there, good luck! ;-)

  • Is he one? said:

Search wherever you want to then. Decade=10 years.

  • juca said:

The last great album pearl jam was in 2002 (river cur)
Avocado and Backspacer are weak, but pop songs with , PJ needs to rescue his old rock n ‘roll of the years 90, PJ go to work! go go go fact ;)

  • Is he one? said:

“Avocado” was just freaking fine. If the next one is as good, I’m in for a treat! :-D

  • Is he one? said:

I’ll never say enough how the avocado album is my favorite from the band since Yield. Without the slightest doubt in my mind I can even tell. It’s great from A to Z.

  • Big M said:

Avocado was their best album since Binaural which was really their last great album. Riot Act was uneven and Backspacer freaking sucked.

  • shoegazer said:

My favorite thing about PJ is how everyone has a different opinion on which albums they like/dislike. I think the 4 albums between No Code & Backspacer are average at best, and I actually like Backspacer quite a bit with the exception of a few tracks. Yet the next person can swear Avocado or Binaural changed their life and they hate Backspacer. The only thing most people (usually) agree on is Riot Act is right up there as one of their weakest albums. I enjoy the discussion amongst fellow fans.

  • Is he one? said:

I always thought Backspacer was a weaker version of the avocado. They share a lot of similarities IMO.

Binaural is the less unanimous among fans I guess. I think it’s their weakest album and I prefer Riot Act to it. (Still the 2 albums I love the less).

  • Butthead said:

Hopefully this record rocks. VS is their best record then Vitalogy, Ten, Yield, Binaural, No Code, Riot Act, Pearl Jam, and Backspacer.

  • WhoFarted said:

So that means a Northeast US fall tour awesome the same cities get the same attention over and over again.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

Found the quote on Twitter on @PearlJamOnline, couldn’t find that actual interview.

The last 10 years- the last decade

  • g said:

    he said nothing…

  • Iowa Mike said:

Exactly….no album this year, but Philly, New York, Toronto, Jones Beach, and Boston will get somehow f-ing 2 shows each. Wrigley gets their’s this Summer, so apparently that’s the “Midwest”….tssss. So annoying.

  • Shadow on the Sun said:

No new Tool and quite possibly no new PJ in 2013 sucks ass. I want more new music!!!!!!!

Whether the PJ disc drops in ’13 or ’14 it better be longer than an hour. A 7-8 year wait should refresh these guys to write some longer songs….i hope

  • Silver said:

Fuck, 9-12 months is too much
C’mon guys you recorded TEN in three months,
You’ve been working for this record like 4 or 5 months and you say still need 9-12 months???? Why so slow????

  • Christine said:

November 2013- February 2014 works for me. I can wait.

    woot \m/

  • Boom said:

Half of you are fucked wasting time debating a decade or ten years.

Now, here’s what is happening. Stone is mindfucking everybody. There wil he a new pearl jam record this summer prior to Wrigley field. Tour announcement for the fall will be announced as soon as the sports leagues finalize their schedules.
Stone and Jeff have contradicted each other.

For the rest of you that don’t know what you’re talking about. Don’t post.

I’m sure most of you are little kids and didn’t grow up with his band

Someone here said pearl jam don’t like to experiment…….every record they e done has been an experiment, not one record sounds the same.

  • Big M said:

Oh Boom is Nostradamus now! I’m sorry us younger fans who didn’t “grow up” with them weren’t born in the same era as you were. What a stupid thing to say. Just because some of us weren’t there for Pearl Jam’s first concert that makes our fanship less valid. Screw that, PJ has been with me every day of my life since I was in high school. Maybe it’s us younger fans who are still life blood. Your generation liked them for a second when grunge was the “it” thing and then turned their back on them and moved on. It’s that 12 year old kid who heard Ten for the first time today and went out and bought/downloaded the album that matters if you want to be like that. And I’m pretty sure the person said PJ SHOULDN’T experiment, not that they don’t because they clearly do.

  • Grungecaster 1 said:

PEARL JAM SHOULD DO WHAT COUNTLESS GRUNGE ROCK BANDS HAVE DONE IN THE PAST 2 YEARS, COME BACK WITH STRONGER ORIGINAL MUSIC THAT REMINDS US OF THE TRUE ESSENSE OF MUSICS REBELLIOUS PUNK ROCKING PAST BUT ALSO GIVES US NEW SONGS WITH MORE MEANINGFUL GRUNGE-LIKE MESSAGES AND SOUNDS. BACKSPACER AND AVOCADO AND RIOT ACTS AS WELL AS THE CLASSIC ALBUMS: TEN, V.S, VITALOGY, NO CODE ,YIELD AND BINAURAL WERE ABLE TO CAPTURE THAT CLASSIC GRUNGE SOUND AND STORYTELLING, WELL NOW ITS TIME TO HEAR SOMETHING NEW FROM PEARL JAM, CAN I SUGGEST A NEW ALBUM TITLE?

    MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE ?

    SONIC JESUS

    Why so slow?
C´mon guys, lets face it. Pearl jam is over. Dont get me wrong, I really love the band, and have listened to them since 1992. But I think it is time to start thinking that perhaps… we have reached the end of the pearl jam story.
It is sad, but to be totaly honest, the last couple of albums havn´t been so great. Right? I have only been listening to their latest albums because they made good music a long long long time ago…
I am ready to move on in my life, and accept that is was a great time in my life when I could listen to, and relate to, the music of pearl jam.

  • Mills said:

I thought Backspacer was awesome and a return to the roots of PJ. Hey Wolfe you can move on all you want. You won’t be missed. More of a chance for me to get a ticket to the concert.

PS Folks PJ already said there would be fall tour dates announced in the coming months when they announced Wrigley. It’s on the main freaking page at pearljam.com

  • Grungecaster 1 said:

YOU KNOW?? BAD RELIGION HAVE A NEW GREAT PUNK ROCK ALBUM CALLED TRUE NORTH, HOW COME GRUNGE.NET DOESNT DO A FULL REPORT ON THAT?? IS PUNK ROCK MUSIC NOT AS IMPORTANT AS GRUNGE? BEING THAT TRUE GRUNGE ROCK MUSIC CAME FROM THE ROOTS OF PUNK ROCK, COLLEGE RADIO AND BASICALLY INDEPENDANT MUSIC.

  • Wolf said:

ok Mills, no problem, you can have my ticket. They almost never tour Europe anyway…

  • Pearl Jam Update from Stone Gossard – New Album May Be Out in “Nine to Twelve Months” | Rock Cellar Magazine said:

[...] Grunge Report points out, PJ have only released two albums in the past 10 years – 2006′s Pearl Jam [...]

  • Brain of K said:

Wolf,in the last 5 years or so they’ve toured Europe more than they’ve toured the US.

While i’m at it, people have been slating them for over 20 years now, so if you’re ready to ‘move on’, then good riddance; it means real fans should have a better chance of getting tickets for shows if casul fans like you don’t bother.

  • chuck shaq said:

Matt finished all of drum tracks late last year he said. Eddie/Jeff say they’re halfway done. Someone is out of communication with the rest of the group, obviously.

  • FanGirl said:

New interview with McCready says the album will drop this year. That pretty much cooroborates Stoney’s interview. And for those who think PJ is over, they’ve got alot of life left in them yet. It ain’t over.
