SUGAR RAY FRONTMAN MARK MCGRATH: ‘BILLY CORGAN IS RUNNING FROM HIS LEGACY’
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Sugar Ray frontman & Extra television co-host Mark Mcgrath discussed Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan saying the following:
“It’s almost like he has disdain for his material from the Nineties. Oceania was a great record, but it ain’t no Siamese Dream. He defined an era. His legacy is in place, so why would he be running from that? Brian Wilson will always be talking about Pet Sounds and goddammit, I wish I could talk about Pet Sounds for the rest of my life.”

yeah billy corgan is billy corgan, we all know who billy corgan is… as for smashing pumpkins’ legacy billy should have stopped using the name in 2000/2001 when the original members left the band and billy would have continued the legacy of zwan with its new members. when it comes to writing music the people you work with plays a major role in how to make/release an epic record…
On the “Oceania” tour, they played the entire “Oceania” album, plus several of their 90s hits. Billy wants to stay fresh and not live in the past, but he also gives his fans some of the iconic songs that they want to hear.
I don’t know what Mark Mcgrath’s problem is.

I couldn’t imagine. I can’t imagine a better gratification than playing a song like “Today.” How can he not play that when he knows it’ll just slay his audience? I gotta admire the artist in him to not do that. We all want instant gratification, and to hold that back? Well, he’s a bigger person than I am. That’s for sure.

Its tough to not remember the hooks to those Sugar Ray songs. Even if you hate that group, they’re having a blast, and making tons of money, and also, giving the fans exactly what they want. Imagine SP doing ANY of that

I don’t get this comment at all. If he was running from his legacy, he wouldn’t have taken the ridiculous amount of time to put together the amazing reissues. The great artists continue to make music and rarely repeat themselves. What’s Billy supposed to do? Just live in the past? I think that’s better suited for the STPs and Pavements of the world.

Seems to be the eternal internal struggle of musicians that get hit songs and have long careers. They’re tired of playing the same songs incessantly over say a 20 year period and have new material they’re excited about and would rather play instead. I’d say most people that go buy tickets to see them are wanting to hear the music they grew up with live rather than a bunch of songs they’ve never heard. Oceania has only sold just over 100,000 copies. 1 mil for Gish, 6 mil for Siamese Dream, and over 10 mil for Melon Collie. Who’s he playing these shows for? Most people go to shows to hear songs they love live, not to just hear a dude do his thang. (IMO, he sings like a wuss anyway, and Mayonaise was the Pumpkins best song)
seems Mr McGrath agrees with Jimmy Chamberlain, that Billy should be a nostalgia act. In other words, he’s jealous.

Mark McGrath has always been a tool, and I’m sure is jealous, but he’s also right.

Does anyone really give a shit what some frontman from a shitty late-90′s pop group have to say about anything??? For your information, Mr. McGrath, Billy Corgan is amazing artist and SP was easily one of the most influencial bands of the 90′s, something you could never possibly achieve. Go back to reuniting with Sugar Ray and playing bars with Smash Mouth, and leave REAL artists alone.
Hey don’t knock Sugar Ray. Their “Summerland tour” with Gin Blossoms, Everclear, Lit & Marcy Playground (No Smash Mouth) was one of the funnest & enjoyable concerts I went to last year.
I would say BC is building his legacy.
Can’t take a guy who has frosted tips and was the host of “Don’t Forget the Lyrics!” too seriously.

Wow…. after reading this article McGrath sounds like he’s stuck in a 90s time machine and has no confidence in himself to even attempt to write new music. Say whatever you want about Corgan but I know he will always keep pushing ahead and exploring new territory. This 90s nostalgia bullshit is all about money, nothing else. McGrath even admitted as much.
