KRIST NOVOSELIC & PAT SMEAR DISCUSS THE POSSIBILITY OF NIRVANA RECORDING MORE NEW MATERIAL
Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic was asked by SPIN in a recent interview if he would consider recording more new material with the surviving members of Nirvana beyond the 2012 collaboration with Paul McCartney ‘Cut Me Some Slack.’ Novoselic said, “I might be open. I’m always willing to play. I want to make a lot more music this year.”
A reporter also asked Nirvana/Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear if he objected to the reunion of the surviving members of Nirvana being labeled a Nirvana reunion. Smear said, “Nah, I don’t care what you call it. I’d do it either way.”
Also for the record, I used ‘Nirvana’ in the headline because ‘surviving members of Nirvana’ can get too long. Also, Dave Grohl has referred to them as Nirvana in interviews with The Daily Telegraph and Rolling Stone.

sirvana yes! nirvana no!
In my opinion, it is pretty disturbing and nonsense to call them Nirvana, since Kurt Cobain was a huge part of Nirvana. He used to write the songs, to draw the artwork for records, or invent the concepts for videos and other stuff. This is one of the few cases where a band was completely centered on a man. Although everybody was an important part of the band, Kurt Cobain was the core of it.
I love all three of them, and wouldn’t object to hearing new music. Not necessarily under the ‘Nirvana’ name, but I’d listen no matter what they’d call themselves.
They have a guitarist, a bassist and a drummer who can also sing. I say go for it.
They were in Nirvana so what’s the big deal? Credit them with some intelligence because if they did record again, it wouldn’t be called Nirvana now would it.
I agree Kurt is core of Nirvana. however I still believe if Nirvana could act nowadays, then 4 guys could make more original songs.
So I’m so happy, if Krist, Dave and Pat made more songs by the name of Nirvana. Why Not? Nirvana is still here. survive means Nirvana is still alive. that’s why Dave made the Sound City and Back and Forth.
in my opinion….
“Nirvana”
Courtney killed Kurt.
who cares what the name is. Do we not call bands The Who, or Led Zeppelin, Alice in Chains or Pink Floyd?
That would be great… Imagine Courtney’s butthurt and all those school-kids hahah. Tones of butthurt
These were the members of Nirvana, so you can call them Nirvana. What are you supposed to call them? I’m with Smear: I don’t care what you call it.
Let sleeping dogs lie. Blind Melon and AIC got SUPER lucky to find similar sounding frontmen, but i think Grohl should know better than to record anything under the name of Nirvana.
“AIC got SUPER lucky to find similar sounding frontman”
No, DuVall does not sound like Staley. He has a healthy voice that can hit all the high notes Staley did when Staley was healthy and younger. But their tones are quite different. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make about ‘lucky’ or ‘similar sounding’ really…
Travis can sound like Shannon on the older material and i have seen it live which is why i can make that claim.
Duvall when harmonizing with Cantrell is almost spot on. When not harmonizing you can tell a difference, but he still pulls it off.
Van Halen found a different type of success when replacing Roth with Hagar. Hagar took them in a different musical direction. Both Duvall and Travis allow BM and AIC to maintain the forward progess with the same style of music and not tarnish it.
So for any band to replace a singer who was beloved by fans and can sound SIMILAR to that deceased singer is getting extremely LUCKY. How is that not clear?????
they just call it nirvana because it’s easier than saying all their names in succession every single time. get over it.
when people refer to the surviving members of the doors, they don’t list all their goddamn names either. they just say “the surviving doors” or in the beatles’ case, same thing.
I don’t give a crap at this point what name they use, I really couldn’t care less about Nirvana’s legacy or anything of that stuff. I would love to see them make more music together, as long as Grohl is playing drums.
If these three guys ever did record an album, or tour together as a legit band (not the revolving door of Sound City collaborators)with or without a 4th person, I’m willing to bet they do it under a different name. Mostly because of Courtney Love. She will always be connected to the Nirvana name, and I would think they would try to get away from that / her.
Just my opinion.
I’d be in favor of something with Paul McCartney. Call it ‘Paul McCartney and Nirvana’ or even ‘Sirvana.’ Perform a whole new album and maybe 1 Beatles song and 1 Nirvana song.
Basically whoever they collaborate with I’d call it ‘___ and Nirvana’ rather than just Nirvana as the official name.
If they got together and toured playing Nirvana songs, I would keep the Nirvana name. If they got together and played all new music, I would change the name to establish that it’s a new band.
That’s what I’ve been kind of hinting at in this whole interview. That we’re almost exhausted. We’ve gone to the point where things are becoming repetitious. There’s not something you can move up toward, there’s not something you can look forward to.
I hate to actually even say it, but I can’t see this band lasting more than a couple more albums, unless we really work hard on experimenting. I mean, let’s face it. When the same people are together doing the same job, they’re limited. I’m really interested in studying different things, and I know Krist and Dave are as well. But I don’t know if we are capable of doing it together. I don’t want to put out another record that sounds like the last three records.
I know we’re gonna put out one more record, at least, and I have a pretty good idea what it’s going to sound like: pretty ethereal, acoustic, like R.E.M.’s last album. If I could write just a couple of songs as good as what they’ve written … I don’t know how that band does what they do. God, they’re the greatest. They’ve dealt with their success like saints, and they keep delivering great music.
That’s what I’d really like to see this band do. Because we are stuck in such a rut. We have been labeled. R.E.M. is what? College rock? That doesn’t really stick. Grunge is as potent a term as New Wave. You can’t get out of it. It’s going to be passé. You have to take a chance and hope that either a totally different audience accepts you or the same audience grows with you.
They can record new material, but I’m not worried they would call it Nirvana. Dave Grohl could have taken over Nirvana but decided to have his own band and call it Foo Fighters. He’s never played a Nirvana song, Marigold notwithstanding. Smear isn’t even an original member he was added in 1993 to help out Kurt on guitar to add a layering sound live. Krist is pretty old school so I don’t think he would call it Nirvana. No one can replace Kurt Cobain.
I’d like to see the three of them work together and come up with some great sounds but I’d like it to note have the Nirvana name – it should be like Grohl’s colab with John Paul Jones and Josh Homme or something, or have them do tracks under “foo” the way QofSA have guests on their LPs.
All that opinion said, I still thing every radio station on the planet should be playing the SNL live version of Cut Me Some Slack (or the Sound City LP version) — I think I’ve watched the SNL version too many times to count and the more I watch it the more intense it becomes.
That performance, the sound, the way the SNL folks got the filming of it correct (insomuch as when the song builds up to speed the cameras don’t try to speed up but stay constant) is brilliant. That performance should win whatever awards the industry gives to t.v. shows or performers and every person on the planet should see/experience it with the preface ” By the way, Paul McCartney is 70.”
When he let’s loose, it’s just too too too awesome. I think if there is an afterlife and if people who have left us can see what we are doing, Kurt might have smiled and even laughed with a bit of joy at the site of McCartney and even moved his head in approval as the four of them tore it up. I’d like to think that.
The Dave Paul interaction in Sound City sums it up:
Dave: “I wish was always this easy.”
Paul: “It is.” (smile)
I’ll watched the SNL performance 5 times in a row yesterday before leaving the house to pick up the husband at the bus and I spazzed for at least 30 minutes at dinner saying “why doesn’t the world know how awesome this is”, and he pretended to shake me and smack me across the face while saying “… and you’re the only one who knows it.” Guess you had to be there – very cute really.
Anyway, Flyers won today. I thought the Devils were supposed to play the Capitals today – don’t tell me they are going to play during the Daytona 500. That would blow.
Anyone here in the SF bay area want to go with me to see Mudhoney at Slims in April? I still have an extra ticket.
PS: if anything, the track et al is a great tribute to Kurt’s desire to figure out how to blend the sound of Black Sabbath and The Beatles. I think they couldn’t have nailed it any harder and McCartney makes it look effortless. He was supposed to marry me when I was 10 dontcha know (1975).
If space time travel was possible, im sure we would all want the real Kurt Cobain to come back and sing Smells Like Teen Spirit all over again
I say keep going Dave, Krist and Pat , but maybe its time the Foo Fighters break up and the guys start a new band , entirely new music , new direction as Dave lead vocals, guitar, Pat Smear, guitar , Krist Novoselic bass, and bring in Dean Deleo of Stone Temple Pilots and Eric Kretz on drums of Stone Temple Pilots right??
A new Audioslave type superband of 2013 and beyond
Dave Grohl
Pat Smear
Krist Novoselic
Dean Deleo
Eric Kretz
Call it The Combat Boots
I’d like the DeLeo brothers to stay 1000000000 miles away from Nirvana. That would be like Poison joining Metallica.
I hope that more people pay attention for Nirvana than before circumstance. It’s the time for turning point of view.
Grohl is too smart. He would never use the Nirvana name if he, Pat and Krist collaborated because the whore bag would get some royalties or she would fight them till the end of time like what happened with Sublime.
Just make music. It won’t matter what you call them, people will follow if it’s good.
^^^^^^
Thank you Casper, I was beginning to think I was the only one who thinks that Courtney Love is the single biggest reason these guys won’t record or tour under the name Nirvana.
Christine,
I love the performances of Cut Me Some Slack too. Probably my favorite thing that happened in music last year, just such visceral energy. It’s obviously not the same Nirvana, but those guys playing together still had that visceral energy/chemistry and you throw in a legendary Beatle and it’s magic. That’s why I’d like to see more from the McCartney/Nirvana collaboration.
1 Beatles song and 1 Nirvana song? The only time I have heard a Nirvana song played live is Seether covering Heart Shaped Box which was awesome. Those songs deserve to be played live.
If the surviving Nirvana played all their classic songs and you want to hear them play it then go but if you think its wrong or dont want to hear it then dont go.
Nirvana with Rome!
If they get in touch with Kurt, somehow…
think about it, what this means.
I can feel something but it’s hard to put into words.
I wish Courtney would just leave Nirvana alone and go away.
A buddy of mine said “Nirvana…nope. Near-vana? Yessir!”
Hahaha, always funny that one
Paul’s a better singer than Kurt was so wouldn’t it be KURT’S honor to allow one of musics legends to take his band in a new era? I know it was Kurt’s band…but think about it
Would be best if Courtney Love was the new lead singer of Nirvana 2.Hole
Scott Weiland is also a good way to go or Maynard James Keenan.
