SCOTT WEILAND CHALLENGES FAN TO A FIGHT AT SHOW IN NEW YORK

By: 10 March 2013 43 Comments

Possible Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland challenged a fan to a fight at his show last night in New York at Irving Plaza. The fan had been heckling Weiland. Weiland called out the fan to come on stage, “So you’re fuckin’ pulling that fuckin’ like gun shit off on me? Then come up and meet me one on one man. You play tough guy from an audience behind a barricade. [talking to security guard regarding fighting him] I’d love to. Yeah, that guy. Trust me. And just don’t forget it guys like you fuckin’ waste your money. I mean, actually, let him stay here, and just get all fuckin’ riled up. He won’t be able to sleep tonight.”

You can watch video of the incident below. If the embedded video doesn’t work click here to watch it.

Okay, Scott didn’t start this one. I think it would have been entertaining to see though and that the guy deserved it.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

Scott actually did fight a neo nazi fan at an STP show in 1993 I believe. Beat him up pretty good.

  • JG566 said:

Hope Scott beat his ass. Why was that dude even there? Just like why are half the people that are about to be on this comment section even here?!

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

Because they love the juicy stories but don’t want to admit it.

  • lilrockable said:

hecklers are such attention whore pansies

  • BillyL said:

Brett, are you thinking of when Layne beat up that nazi in Sweden in ’93, or did Weiland also do something similar?

Heckling is never ok. Scott should’ve gone a couple of rounds with the guy.

  • Brett Buchanan (author) said:

Scott did something similar. I’m pretty sure there was some lawsuit too.

Some of my saved quotes about the incident in 1993:

“Scott Brown, who asked that his hometown not be identified, said he received three stitches after being punched and struck in the head with a guitar by singer Scott Weiland and the band’s bassist. “It’s unfortunate. I don’t think he should get away with this”
    *************
“Brown said he was beaten by singer Scott Weiland and bassist Robert DeLeo, both of whom jumped off the stage and into the narrow pit”
    *************
“The pair was charged after Scott Brown, a Mount Wachusett Community College student, complained that [Robert DeLeo] and [Scott Weiland] acted like real Creep(s) last summer during a concert at the Polish American Country Clubin [Gardner].
DeLeo was represented by Boston attorney Oliver Mitchell, who’s making a career of getting famous bad boys out of trouble. (He represented Marky Mark in his A & B case awhile back.) Frances Robinson represented Weiland.”

And just to clarify, since some people have decided that fans cannot be unbiased about the people whose music they enjoy without being traitors and shouldn’t air their opinions, I absolutely love Scott Weiland’s music. All of it (well, maybe not Libertad so much). I’ve been a fan for over half my life. As an adult, I’m too old to have posters on my bedroom wall, but I would be the first one to hang a Scott Weiland poster and jump with joy if I could once again experience the joy of knowing that a sober Scott Weiland was making music, preferably with STP. Therefore, I will also be his harshest critic. I don’t accept bullshit from the artists I enjoy no more than I would my neighbor. But it’s as if some people feel that I am supposed to idolize these artists and blindly eat up every piece of fabrication and bullshit just because I’m a fan. Yes, I am a fan, and therefore I’d love to see a healthy Weiland live for a long time and not go the route of Layne Staley, but to make excuses for them and sit and lie to myself that Scott sounds great when I can clearly hear and see that he is half the man he used to be (pun intended), that is something I will not do. For those who cannot see the difference in Scott’s behavior and performance these days as opposed to his sober days, I reserve the right to call you deluded and ignorant. Trust me, when Scott is sober and in good form, you’ll see it, hear it and just fucking know it. I’m still waiting to see, hear and know that again, and I hope I will. I waited for Layne to come around, but it never happened. I still think Scott has it in him to be the great frontman and formidable artist we all know he can be, but this just isn’t it.

    Ok, commence delusion…

“Possible STP frontman” hahaha. I like that

If you heckle a rockstar you should be beat down.

    Good article

  • Dan said:

    What was the heckler yelling?

  • Abe Froman said:

@BillyL, I’m right there with you.

There’s far too much idolizing of these musicians, not just on this site, but in life generally.

I also think SW deserves all the criticism in the world for his behavior.
Like I noted in another thread, people who willingly pay money to go see this guy get what they ask for.

  • Inmytree said:

Why are the guys getting beat up always Neo Nazis in these stories? BS, they are probably just drunk idiots. Neo Nazi makes for a more dramatic anecdote, though.

I would have loved to see scott get his ass kicked ! Its a real shame that douche is still around !

  • GRUNGECASTER said:

How do we know this wasnt all staged to make Scott Weiland look all brave and macho and stuff? :) Maybe he could use some good publicity to let people know that SCOTT WEILAND is still a rock star for good no matter what band hes in

  • Abe Froman said:

    @mandingo:

Right? I don’t think we hear about him getting in fights when he’s not on stage, because he doesn’t have security around him to bail him out. If he pulled this shit in some average townie bar in Jerkwater, USA he would get his ass kicked in.

“If you heckle a rockstar you should be beat down.”

I don’t understand this comment. It’s as if being a good songwriter / one-time live performer automatically makes you:

    A) A tough guy (& please don’t give me examples of SW swinging guitars at people with security around to bail him out, anyone who think’s that’s a tough guy is living a very sheltered life)

    B) Exempt from criticism for showing up late/ showing up too drunk or high to perform.

    The apologists blow my mind.

  • John said:

The haters blown my mind just as much as the apologists.

Both apologists and haters take everything the extremes (ie he can do no wrong/he needs to die). Everyone just takes the smallest things and amplifies them tremendously.

  • me said:

nobody has the right to be an asshole at a show. scott is still badass enough he’d rip the guy a new one. i don’t blame him.

  • Raj said:

Hecklers are losers, get a life. Awesome Scott called him out, maybe we will soon reading about Scott jumping off stage a la Axl Rose style.

  • Crash22 said:

That guy in the crowd is lucky Doug Green didn’t get involved, that guy doesn’t take any shit.

  • lilrockable said:

@Abe There is a very big difference from criticism and being a heckler. Criticism emphasizes on a problem while alluding to how it can be improved. Hecklers are just annoying, dumb, assholes screaming for attention

  • Abe Froman said:

I agree, people who are heckling an artist just for the sake of it are a pretty low form of mouth breather; those kind of people DO deserve a beating.

  • Susan said:

I don’t think this was staged or anything for publicity.

I know people are saying he used to be sober, but looking back at alot of the concert footage over the years I think he was always on something even when starting out in the early 90′s before heroin-crack cocaine mainly.
But now it just seems like some kind of pills/meds and alcohol & it’s definitely affecting his singing.

  • Kitty said:

Whether Weiland is on drugs (whatever they maybe) or not, I think he has some type of brain damage :( Money aside, I think he’s been trying to keep going, but his brain is fucked up.

I’m not a hater. I’ve been a fan of everything STP has done together and apart since 1993.

Now for the hecklers, at any show, they pay for their ticket as do I. But the last thing I want is a distraction by some asshole. Seriously, asshole, why waste money/time on going to a show you already know you’re going to hate? Whether security or the band beat them up or kick them out, PLEASE, by ALL means do whatever you have to do. I’m there to get drunk, dance my ass off, and have a good time. The Asshole just ruins the fun.

The fight with a fan took place in Massachustes during the “Bar-B-Q-Mitzvah” Tour w/ Butthole Surfers. I was there & I’ll never forget it. Some guy was crowd surfing, back and forth in front of the stage. It was outdoors and daylight, so I got to see all the details. The surfer was flipping Scott off over & over again for several mins. Scott then asked the crowd to push the guy towards the stage. scott was reciting “Come to Papa” while the surfer landed on stage. Actually, it was Robert Deleo who bashed the guy over the head w/ his Bass.

The incident made local news several time over the next few months, since of course the guy was suing the band. I had the displeasure odf meeting the Dude’s Girlfriend a few months later at a party. She said her boyfriend thought it was hilarious that he caused all of this, and she did as well….a match made inn heaven…ended up being the last show I saw in MA before moving to Seattle, as well as my last STP Show as well..too bad, love the band to this day.

Lord… Scott has been in the news for all the wrong reasons for what seems like forever.

  • Seattle1994 said:

    Yup

  • Abe Froman said:

@ seattle1994, that show was at the Polish American Beach Club right? I wasn’t there, but I remember the story.

  • SuperSG said:

Scott’s voice sounds all nasally haha, and that guy should be beaten up by the Delos…oh wait, mb

  • Seattle1994 said:

Yes it was Abe!! THANK YOU!! I could not remember the name of it to save my life. Strange venue, but it was perfect, it’s why I remember it so vividly..weather was perfect too….too bad that idiot made a mess of things. Elvis impersonator, Flaming Lips, STP, Butthole Surfers..

  • Seattle1994 said:

..In Gardner, MA….man am I getting old!

  • Abe Froman said:

That’s a legendary lineup, I was pissed I missed it. I saw the Black Crowes there two years later. Unique venue indeed.

  • Dave said:

Not for nothing, Scott Sucks! and STP was a ripoff of Pearl Jam at the time, He does suck, and that guy had every right to tell him he sucks all night long…

  • LULZ said:

Haha, the age and/or intelligence of some you of imbeciles couldn’t be more apparent. Pro athletes, particularly baseball outfielders, get abused on a daily basis but only the most unstable of them ever even acknowledge the idiot hecklers. Here we have a guy that has never been able to hold it together going after a fan. Real bright and you morons that support it must be getting real far in life. Dopes. If Scotty boy doesn’t want to hear hecklers, maybe he needs to do something that gets the rest of the fans cheering loud enough so it doesn’t matter…. ever hear Vedder get heckled? Nope, cause you can’t hear fans at PJ shows.

Pretty cool that STP hits people with guitars for getting flipped off… are people fucking 6 years old?

    Weiland…. #LULZ,20 years ago called…

  • Seattle1994 said:

..actually, to be fair..I did hear Vedder being Heckeled @ The Axis Club in Boston on the Ten tour…..it went something like..”…go home you Seattle Faggot!!..” Which, seems to be a standard greeting from educated Bostonians @ the time. It was probably the same guy that yelled the same thing @ Cornell on the “Munsters Of Rock” tour w/ FNM & Voivod around the same time.

Neither retaliated, Cornell laughed & Vedder just ignored it.

  • SuperSG said:

Pretty sure Ed and Chris would kill those guys by screaming at them sending sonic blasts of pure satanic (Chris) and Vibrato(Eddy) energy

  • Susan said:

Yeah, why wouldn’t he call out a heckler? He’s done it before in the past, and so much BS is going on with the fate of STP, he’s just trying to do his shows and live up to the expectations of his fans.

I really hope one day he reunites with STP, he’s at his best with them and it just works so much better than with these other guys. He’s still a great singer but he seems so sedated when he speaks, for quite a while now.

  • MindRiot132 said:

Kudos BillyL, my thoughts exactly. Scott could still be great, no question, the real mystery is whether we’ll see that greatness again, because like many of you I just don’t see it right now.

Weiland is a coward. He knows fine well that the heckler wouldn’t be allowed to get near the stage. The man is a joke figure.
