Very excited about the new album. I just hope the production is a bit more spacious on this than Black Gives Way to Blue. Hollow sounds like it could have been off of the last record. I liked it, but need more space in the songs.

  • Craigory52 said:

Good song titles. Looking forward to the new album. Black Gives Way to Blue is a great album and I hope this is just as good or even better.

FINALLY. I love this band from when I first heard them in 1994 until the end of time. This is going to be cool… AIC cool.

What a retarded title for an album. At least we have new Mad Season stuff coming out. RIP Layne.

I don’t understand people who won’t even give the post-Layne AIC a chance. You’re worse than a jealous girlfriend. And you know what a jealous girlfriend is? Fuggin annoying! Get over it already– it’s been like a damn decade. Layne wasn’t the entire band. Still, he’s not replaceable, but when the singing is split just about 50-50 it makes for a reasonable transition. I think it was a fantastic idea to keep AIC in tact.

Who cares if you don’t like it… shouldn’t you be busy on your way to go fuck yourself anyway?

Some notes from the revolver article

“The soaring, acoustic driven “Voices” was the first new tune to surface.”

“The bass heavy Sabbathian-riffed single “Stone” came out during this time” (Cantrell’s recovery)

“Deceptively, uplifting sounding track “Low Ceiling” – which opens up with “Old Mr. Fun is back/Wonder where he’s been hiding at”

Title track – “sinewy, shimmery guitar line that sounds like a Darwinic descendant of Love Hate Love”
Chorus line – “The devil put dinosaurs here/Jesus don’t like a queer…No problem with faith, just fear”

Bottom-heavy dirges (Lab Monkey, Hung on a Hook)
Mid-paced doom rockers (Pretty Done, Breath on a Window, Choke)

Phantom Limb – “riff that slowly jackhammers it’s way to a beautifully bleak and vicious chorus
“I’ll just haunt you like a phantom limb” – William Duvall

“It always amazes me that some of the most hateful and hurtful things are done in the name of some sort of belief system” – Jerry Cantrell

  • Ben said:

@ Matt – I also really hope the production is better on this album than BGWTB. It really ruined the album in my opinion. However after listening to Hollow which not only sounds like a BGWTB B-side but the production only sounds marginally better. I fear that this album will be the same – I really hope not!

what is WRONG is liars thieves. CORINTHIANS. something i told to tanya vece to get a message and he used it for his own gain just like every idea that is stolen since layne has gone. corinthians is an insider. only a few know or knew its true meaning. just like alice. jerry has no clue what that is. insider. he is not one.
if you think you knew anything about layne you are wrong. nice what people say and such. his own mother cant get dates right because she WAS NOT THERE ANYTIME. just gets bits and parts from kind folks. bullshit.

money and fame they sold to. layne wanted out. look where he is. and look where jerry is.

sick monkey he still is. reward him now with a golden prize for stealing from the founders.

humanity is at an all time low. i am sickened by such a race. go back to your tv and electronics. sad.

“What a retarded title for an album. At least we have new Mad Season stuff coming out. RIP Layne.”

You see, the thing is, at this point, if you don’t get what the title means, now that it’s basically been explained, in relation to the idiot Bible-thumpers claims of how old the earth is (6,000 years) according to them- then you’re just fucking stupid. The album title is the perfect stick-in-the-eye to those moronic Christian nuts. So you’re either an idiot yourself, or a Christian Dick. Fuck yourself. You will never know what Layne might possibly think- so stop presuming to. Fuckass. Suck a dick. Rot from the crotch outward.

“ALICE”- you are obviously one of these types. Eat it.

What is wrong with people on these comments?

Seriously, it’s infantile. The anonymity of the internet just brings out the worst in people.

  • Hiitmea said:

If you dont like the new Alice in Chains for getting back together without Layne i understand. But i think you should support the band. Keeping Alice In Chains alive is also keeping Layne legacy alive. The more music they make more fans will get turned on to the new AIC and the old AIC introducing even more fans to Layne and his music than if AIC still wasnt around. Thats one of the many reasons im gonna buy the new record. Also its not like new AIC sucks they might not be as good as Layne AIC but theyre still really really good. I think people that dont want to give new AIC a chance are just really bitter. I was one of those people too but theyre back and theyre not gonna stop now so there really isnt any point to stay mad at them and hope they just stop making music just because there are fans that still cant get over the fact that theyre continuing without layne. Theyre two albums into their reunion people. There is no turning back now. Trust im a big big big Layne fan. But what has happened has happened and we cant change that. So might aswell support new AIC to get them even more recognition than they already have so Layne gets even more recognition than he already does. I think if youre a true Layne fan you would understand where im coming from. Support new AIC doesnt hurt Laynes legacy it only hleps it. Hopefully i was able to convince some of you people that were againts the new aic into supporting them. Peace

  • SUICYCO said:

    Hey pebbles,

Who are you to interpret the album title’s meaning for us? Why are you imposing your own anti-Christian agenda on AIC? I happen to be a Christian AND an Alice in Chains fan. You’re entitled to your own opinions, but they certainly sound quite shallow. Maybe you’re an angry teenager who thinks it’s all very simple. I believe in the Bible, but I certainly don’t consider myself stupid. In fact, I have a Master’s degree in History and am very well read.

Maybe your interpretation of the album title is correct, and maybe it isn’t. But unless you are secretly Jerry Cantrell, I doubt that you’re privy to that information. I don’t agree with everything AIC says, does, or sings about, but I think they are four pretty cool guys. I know William Duvall majored in religious studies(or something of that nature) in college. I seriously doubt their views are as skewed or intolerant as you would make them sound. One of the lyrics quoted above says something like “no problem with faith, just fear”.

Regardless, stop belittling others and trying to impose your interpretations on others. You’re guilty of the same intolerance you accuse the “Bible thumpers” of. Typical anti-Christian hypocrisy.

  • MJ said:

@SUICYCO: Ugh, shut up. Christianity deserves every criticism it gets and more. Stop acting like you’re part of an oppressed religion and realize that what you’re following is a flawed, ugly system.

  • MJ said:

@SUICYCO: Notice that pebbles was talking about Bible thumpers. If you’re offended by their post, then you’re most likely one of those fundamental nuts.

  • MJ said:

    *fundalmentalist

  • Iso said:

SUICYCO- Yes you, you religious nutcase. The Bible is a work of fiction, not fact. The meaning of the album title is correct. Your system sucks. The sooner ‘The Church’ and organized religion dissolves the better. Fuck you and your religion. Responsible for more death, misery, mayhem, suppression, control and sexual child abuse than anything in the last 2,000 years. Open your eyes minion. Wake up to the bullshit you’re swallowing then repeating.

  • Scott McLean said:

I like these song titles. Thanks Alice In Chains and I look forward to your new album.

  • Scott McLean said:

Just a followup and comment on these comments here. I’m sick of these mean and nasty comments, also the comments on YouTube are very ugly and nasty. What’s up with that? I’m a Christian but I don’t like stupid criticisms I see on the Internet of bands, or of religions or anything else. Why not just appreciate everyone and the world would suck if we were all identical robots, right?

  • MJ said:

@Scott McLean: You must live with your head up your ass if you think we should all just appreciate the world as is and that’s it. Once again, Christian people need to stop getting upset when their religion is criticized. They will gladly call other religions wrong and crazy, yet think their ways of letting child molesters get a pass and doing their insane missionary work is totally okay.

You have every right to believe in a god. When you choose to associate with religion, that’s where you go very wrong.

  • Maverick785 said:

…the hell are you guys talking about?

It’ll be very interesting to see if “Hollow” is indicative of the album’s sound. I’d love to hear more of William this time around.

  • Blipo said:

i’m Christian, i’m not a “religious nut” or a “bible thumper”. i believe what i want, and you can believe what you want, but dont bash the entire Christian population for the terrible acts that a few have done.

  • Troll Gallagher said:

BGWTB was a good album. I would expect more of the same.

  • SUICYCO said:

MJ and Iso, your comments demonstrate your prejudice, intolerance, and lack of ideas. You’re entitled to dislike and even despise Christianity, if you wish, but you obviously lack arguments, and are incapable of expressing yourselves in a civilized and educated matter. You two are a perfect example of why I usually refrain from commenting on the internet. It’s always the least educated and most ignorant who are quickest to resort to name calling and expletives.

  • GwynnKatie said:

    The comments on here…
Honestly.. I’m shocked. I am at a loss for words with you people. I know we can all get hateful and ugly, especially on the Internet in which everyone’s pretty much anonymous, but to be honest, I have never in my life seen this much misanthropy.
By the way, I have a really good feeling about this album, I’m loving the dark vibe, I adore the title, and I like new-age Alice, even if Layne isn’t here (as much as I love Layne).

  • Country Girl said:

I love their new song “Hollow”, I really can’t wait for the realease of this album, I am also working on a new bio for Layne and the Chains done with love and respect. Lets face it, the guys need it, we need it and we ALL know Layne and Mike deserve it. I hope to have it done by Layne Anniversary date next year (2014).

I believe in God. I don’t believe in the Church.

The Church is evil, yes, it is. It started as something good, but now is just a capitalist, prejudiced institution. So, yeah, the title is a reference to the Bible, since the book states “the devil put dinosaur bones here so people would question God’s existence”.

But religion is not important. What is important is that ALICE IN CHAINS IS BACK! Still rocking.

why is there so much hate on black gives way to blue i love the album granted it took a while for me to get over the fact layne isnt on vocals anymore but after i listened to it all the way and came to turns with jerry singing 90 percent of the time i really do love the album and accept it as AIC album.. im a huge aic fan and been listening to them since 1992 and Jar of Flies is my fav album..dont shoot me but is it the worst thing ever to say i personally think BGWTB is a better and more consistent album than TRIPOD/Alice in Chains

“…but don’t bash the entire Christian population for the terrible acts that a few have done.”

A few? You need to wake the fuck up asshole. Child abuse- the molesting, rape, and sodomy of defenseless children, has been a systematized endless loop of straight-up criminal acts, cover-ups, hush money pay-outs, blanket ‘forgiveness’ by Church higher-ups, all the way up to the fucking Pope. That horrorshow who just left office- Benedict XVI? Know what he did before he became Pope in 2005? Look it up… All the worldwide priest molestation cases went right to HIS DESK. This shit’s been going on ad infinitum. It’s only recently though that the mass populace is really exposing, fighting back, and doing something about these heinous fucking people. A FEW rotten apples? You’re deaf, dumb and blind… Yes- fuck your religion, fuck you SUICYCO.

  • GenXLady said:

I support this band. I love old AIC, and am thrilled they are carrying on with new AIC stuff. I had a hard time thinking about listening to there new stuff at first, too. Then I realized something along the same lines as Hiitmea back a ways up there. ^^^^. Maybe it is easier because I didn’t know them personally. I know some here have said they knew them all back in the day.

It makes me sad that there is so much negativity connected to the band, both new and old versions, with the split amongst some AIC fans. Such as is evidenced in this thread. My feeling? Thank God (Christian God or otherwise) that there are still some good bands making some good rock out there. I am not much of a Justin Bieber type of music fan.

    Peace.

  • LoveHateLove said:

Bullet-not all “Christians” are “Catholic” which is all you seem to be knowledgable of (from the headlines on your news app no less). This is not a religious website and never will be. If you don’t like the new AIC…get the fuck out and don’t come back. That goes to all of the negative bullshit that is posted here. I’m all for freedom of speech, but get over you self proclaimed righteous asses and take it somewhere else. The real AIC fans will hang around and talk about what matters, the music…not the bullshit the you and others like you rare spewing. No worldly or other worldly issues will be solved here or anywhere for that matter.

Despite the song title, “belief system” can apply to anything. Atheism, secular humanism, government.

  • GRUNGECASTER said:

I think Alice In Chains are going in a new spiritual rock direction with their music, maybe its time they get a new frontman and bring back some of that heavy grunge punk aspect :) maybe someone who used to be in another famous 90s alternative rock n roll band ? :)

How about Scott Weiland give Alice In Chains a try? But heres the catch, Slash and Josh Homme have to join the new Alice In Chains too ok? :)

Scott Weiland ( lead vocals )
    Slash ( lead guitar )
Josh Homme ( rhythm guitar )
Jerry Cantrell ( lead guitar )
    Mike Inez ( Bass )
    Sean Kinney ( Drums )

    TRY THAT ;)

  • lilrockable said:

Fuck, I always loved how of all the grunge bands Alice in Chains was the least preachy. This album is already starting arguments among idiots and we only have one song thus far.

  • GwynnKatie said:

ScottMcLean, GenXLady, kingchaz – thanks for the good energy. Also thanks to anyone else who posted positive energy who I did not mention, you are important also.

I am hoping that for the most part – many of you are posting here because you actually like the band… (ALICE I know you don’t and I respect your reasons, although hidden as they are I do believe you have a valid basis for your opinions)

So why are you allowing petty arguments regarding organized religion to poison such a happy occasion? Jerry wrote a beautiful tune called *Jesus Hands* for Boggy Depot. Please – everyone… try to understand each other and respect one another’s belief systems, no matter how far they may differ from yours.

Human beings have been slaughtering one another in the name of organized religion/spiritual belief systems since the dawn of time. The bloodshed is endless, and it’s real. I hardly think the the guys wanted intense arguments of this nature to erupt and fester in this way. Pagans slaughtered pagans when the Nordic Vikings invaded and conquered/populated Eire and Scotland. Catholic Cardinals were quite evil in ancient times but that was because they were more powerful than the King himself. Back then it was all about power, wealth, and the acquisition of land to amass more power & wealth. It is still the same today with the holy wars being fought in the Middle East.

I’m sorry the post is so long. Jesus Christ wanted everyone to love one another and walk the path of Peace. Spirituality and religious beliefs are very important and sacred to those who really hold them close to their hearts. Try to be more tolerant with each other.

    Jesus/Goddess Bless.
Happy Birthday Monday March 18th Jerry.
Bright Blessings Always to You & Much Love to The Family Tribe.

    Peace

I agree entirely with the posters above regarding the production. I have the BGWTB-vinyl but it’s almost unlistenable due to the terrible, horrifying production. Hollow discourages me as well cuz it sounds just as bad :( Hopefully it’s leftovers recorded during the BGWTB-session but I wouldn’t count on it.

Holy shit, you people are self-righteous. You all come off like crazed, arrogant fundamentalists looking for reasons to justify fucking with others. You don’t need some bullshit religion to shape you into a hard-headed tool judging by the way people responded to SUICYCO’s comment. He believes in something you don’t, who gives a fuck? His response was totally rational. Here’s a bit of advice. If you want to fuck with people, fuck with the ones who actually deserve it, and if you can’t tell the difference between that and a decent person who happens to disagree with you, you’re more representative of what’s wrong with humanity than they are. War, poverty, violence, etc. exists because of the inherent nature of the human condition, not what people latch onto to justify such things. If religion were to be completely eradicated tomorrow, I wouldn’t shed a tear. I’m just sick of seeing this attitude shared between both sides of every opinion or belief.

  • Dreux said:

The problem is intolerance. It’s not exclusive to any side of any issue, or any belief or system. It’s a quality of people that transcends all that shit we are so focused on and distracted by. Learn to accept that it will never go away. You can’t force peace, and there will always be one person who isn’t satisfied and will exploit the first loophole they find.
