I heard you once had smashing pumpkins. While grunge doesnt come to mind right away with SP I think they’d fit in well here.
The album Nobody’s Daughter listed under Hole is actually a Courtney Love record. Erik Erlandson has been quoted as saying a reunion of Hole could not legally happen without him. And Mellisa Auf der Maur is currently on tour promoting her sophmore solo record, Out of Our Minds, and I believe is not in any incarnation of Hole at the moment.
I think CL recently said that ND would be a Hole record, but it is an unsubstantiated claim, and, given her track record of incoherent babbling, I wouldn’t take it as fact by any stretch.
This is a good start but far from a complete list.
Here is a link to THE BEST BAND that never broke.
http://www.myspace.com/dandilyonsoup
To me it is inexplicable why these guys were never signed. C’est la vie.
Anyway, you also need to put Sweetwater, Black Happy and Supersuckers on this list.
Blackhappy fell into the record label trap and turned into Shoveljerk, they never had the success many thought they would achive.
Sweetwater fought for years amongst themselves and record labels and ulitimately came full circle in 2001, releasing Suicide on their own label.
the Supersuckers continue to make music today, touring with the likes of Rev. Horton Heat and Nashville Pussy.
Peace,
Scott
Um…. there is an update…
Sweetwater still rocks.
new album and even an upcoming show in Seattle… at a venue that last I heard was dead…
check it out.

Peace
LHS.
Awesome additions! Just add Temple of the Dog and you have a just about perfect grunge list.
yeah i think temple of the dog is the last one you really need. and alright we got some mad season there. R.I.P. Layne and Baker
yeah, Temple of the Dog is missing
Surely the Pumpkins should have a place in there?Temple of the Dog too.
Definitely Temple of the Dog. The Pumpkins should probably be listed as well even though their sound is not quite as hard rock as most of the grunge bands; the musical style is still very much alternative.
Glad to season Mad Season on the list. I’m headed over to Atlanta to see AIC this Friday night at the Tabernacle.
I thought of another band. How ’bout Blind Melon?
Okay – I’ve thought of yet another band from this era. Porno For Pyros. They formed in 1992. They’re not grunge per se, but their sound is very much alternative.
Sorry for all of the multiple posts.
Green Apple Quick Step! Not grunge but one of the most under appriciated bands of all time!!
Bush? Glycerine is one of the ‘grungiest’ tunes I’ve ever heard.
I would add about 10 – 15 more bands,,, a lot of good suggestions above. Doesn’t mean you need to report news on them, just a picture with the names keep people in the know.
L7! luv all the bands up there, but im missing the most beautiful, gentle and sweet grunge band of all time – The L7!
BUSH? How could you mention those jerks. Their music was fucking atrocious. Brit-Grunge idiots, that’s a no-can-do. ‘Glycerine’ = yuck. Their sound was poseur. Gavin Rossdale is a total penis.
Added a bunch of bands a few days ago.
Bundle of Hiss, Cat Butt, and the Night and Days are sorely missing
why STP and no SP????
I think if this list includes STP, then it should definitely include Bush and Sugartooth. Bush may not have been American, but they for sure were a part of the late grunge era, and Sugartooth was the same way, like borderline alternative, but still very grunge.
no pumpkins, dinosaur jr. babes in toyland?
what about Candlebox….?
and may I introduce my band
http://www.myspace.com/runawaydogs
from japan
NO CANDLEBOX.
I concur with dave-NO to Bush! And I’m English. And also-despite being a huge fan-NO TO PUMPKINS they were NOT grunge. at all. while the grunge scene was busy making live recordings of basic live set up, smashing pumpkins were making massive sounding tracks and though part of the era were not part of the scene..listen to the difference between a track like cherub rock-and lithium??
What about?
Smashing Pumpkins
Candlebox
Tool
Foo Fighters
What about?
Silverchair
Candlebox.
Candlebox is must have for sure.
Fastbacks should be there as well.
And a few others that never got that famous:
Cat Butt,
Girl Trouble,
Dickless,
Thrown-Ups,
U-Men
…
and of course, The Presidents of the United States of America!
For me, Smashing Pumpkins makes sense in this list.
Some that were reffered and I would never put then in here would be:
– The Post-grunge ones such as Bush, Silverchair, Seether, etc…
– Tool, that altough is a great band, and every grunge fan probably likes them, is not really grunge…
Greetings from a portuguese grunge super fan!
Hell No to Foo Fighters!!!! WAY TOO MAINSTREAM… and cheesy!
Who is the singer on the header all the way to the right? Don’t recognize him
You forgot Sunny Day Real Estate. Jeez.
I just have one question, WHERE IS SONIC YOUTH IN THIS LIST?
Needs more Heatmiser.
Awesome list, however.
What about…. Dinosuar Jr!!!!!
hey brett you gotta update the melvins album discography the melvins have a new album that came out four days ago named bride screams murder
Sonic Youth, Dinosaur JR.and Veruca Salt should all def be on the list.
On the fence with Bush, they were kind of an afterthought of the era, probably not grunge. But if you want to add the Pumpkins, then Bush should prob go up there also. Maybe Silverchair too.
If we’re adding Bush to the list, we might as well throw in Creed and Nickleback.
I would suggest that grunge is more to do with a period in time, somewhat linked to a geographic location, and not so much bands. Just because is sounds a little grungey, doesn’t mean it qualifies as grunge, and bands that were traditionally a part of the grunge scene in the 90s are not necessarily grunge bands any more.
Pearl Jam, for instance, is hardly considered grunge any longer, if it ever was.
What about Green River and PAW?
what about… nobody cares about these shitty bandwagon jumping poser bands like STP, Candlebox or whatever post-grunge crap there is.
Screw the polls, Local H and Toadies NEED to be on here.
IT’S A GOOD LIST, I DON’T LIKE PEARL JAM AND SMASHING PUMPKINS BUT I HAVE NO THE LAST WORD…
you are forgetting one great band…
Blind Melon !!!
Leave your response!
